the words "genius" and "legend" have quite sadly been devalued these days..... but Kenny Everett deserves to be revered as both, wish we had DJ's and presenters like him around today
Mavis Nicholson interviewed people with respect while still probing and getting the answers, unlike today's interviewers who are rude and butt in half way through every answer. Fantastic description of politicians!!
Such a brilliant interview. Mavis never failed to manage to make celebrities feel relaxed. She also gave an interview with Kenneth Williams which was equally fascinating to watch. Always allowing the person she was talking to time to answer, whereas these days interviewers seem to be forever interrupting the person they have before them. To see Kenny Everett relaxed in her company is compulsive viewing.
Kenny has the sweetest smile. I just fell in love with him here in this interview. Such a sweet man. Shame he had to die so young back in 1995, a year were we said goodbye to so many great British stars - Jeremy Brett, Paul Eddington, Peter Cook, Larry Grayson among many.
I really love Kenny, though he had long passed away when I became aware of him and became a fan. There was just something so endearing and lovely about him; watching him bound out on his tv shows and say, 'Hello!', my heart still lights up. Timelessly funny and creative. He's very missed.
This is the most natural interview I've ever seen of Ken. I knew him fairly well as a tech, (I recommended the Vocoder behind him.) He wasn't the wild man many imagined, but would certainly swoop from highs to lows. We had a lot of laughs together. I still miss him terribly.
An interesting interview. He seems a bit uncomfortable but still bares his soul here and I wonder if this was because he was aware of his Aids diagnosis when this was recorded. The journalists who hounded him into coming out should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves as it was nobody's business but his. He certainly didn't deserve the treatment he got but I guess this was a third of a century ago and it was a different public mentality. At least he responds well to Mavis (who only died a month ago herself) so he felt he can talk to her, I certainly didn't know his ex-wife (who also died this year) had previously been involved with Billy Fury. Kenny was such an interesting chap, the world is a poorer place without him. His impression of Michael Winner, another larger than life character, is also spot on.
0:15.06 - What he says about politics and politicians was correct then, and is now. We miss you Kenny! Really enjoyed this video.. thankyou SO MUCH for uploading it!
Karl Hart We do miss him my friend. & a whole lot more than that bastard Freddie Mercury, who practically murdered him, by KNOWINGLY infecting him with AIDS/HIV
liam whitcombe ... so nothing to do with Nikolai or indeed the Pepe Flores - a Spanish waiter that later moved in to join them? Nikolai Grishanovich succumbed to hiv in 1993 of the same strain on hiv as killed Kenny (you may be unaware that there are several distinct strains of the virus). Kenny was also reportedly a fairly regular visitor to the Coleherne pub (now has a new name) which was at the time at the heart of the leather scene in London. You couldn’t behave that way in 80s/90s London without a huge degree of risk. I don’t know what your issue with Freddie Mercury is, but as you can’t speak factually, maybe you should just keep your bile to yourself. Just as Mercury was a master at his art, Kenny was technically brilliant and in a field of his own, multitracked vocals, and even more subtle tricks like “the lying lyric” from his later capital gold shows illustrate what a fantastically talented and completely underrated broadcaster this man was, and how much poorer the British broadcasting industry is for his loss.
Some of my earliest memories are of Kenny Everett. I was too young to understand why he was funny other than I remember being entranced by his wacky antics and seeing my Mum and Dad crying with laughter. He was responsible for a few of the happiest moments I can remember in my early childhood, He's the only big personality of that time in my life that I cherish other than David Attenborough. Kenny felt like the fun crazy uncle that you only got to see occasionally and David was the kindly wise uncle. I've watched a few tributes and documentaries about Kenny recently and been pleased to find out that he was a genuinely crazy beautiful man that I would have been proud to be able to say was a family member.
I used to see him at a club called Legends in London in the late 70s, he was always alone and always had a plastic bag with him and he didn't want people to approach him. He was fab, I loved his Sid Snot and Cupid Stunt.
pigknickers Yes I remember it was open so you could see into the club as you descended. There was another club even more 'trendy', can't remember the name but the dance floor was surrounded by levels of black leather, used to see him there, it will come to me lol. AND Heaven when it was one big room, used to see Freddie AND Kenny there all the time, I worked at Bangs on a Monday night too, every one there in the 'Hush Room' Now am a granny but got my memories ;)
Sweet funny Kenny, just loved his TV shows but he was even better on radio where he would create his own fantasy universe. The world is such a more monochrome place without him.
My god is would have loved to bumped into Kenny Everette Doing my shopping in a supermarket I'd have kissed him right on the cheek big time but alas he is gone and I'll never get that chance and I'd have kissed him if he was positive no matter what I love him big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a child I used to watch his show. Innocent soft spot (crush maybe) on KE. Loved his show although my Dad didn't like us watching it. (Come on between KE and Benny Hill). We just never knew as fans his sexuality. As with why were we really surprised with Freddy Mercury, Marc Almond ,George Michael? It never mattered when it came out then.
I feel terribly sad for the gay men and women of the past who were crucified for their lifestyle and choices, I hope the men in charge then that made careers out of vilifying the gay and lesbian community have died unpeacefully in agony alone,
They were probably Gay themselves, that seemed to be the theme back then. Nail somebody else up in order to protect yourself. Remember that Kenny was married to a Woman and yet was probably not Bi, it was just common practice to protect oneself against the homophobic majority. Whether right or wrong is open to discussion, but it was just the way it was.
14.42 Michael Winner impression.....pissing myself laughing....doesn't even matter what he said, just the impression :-) I used to paralysed laughing at cupid stunt, sid snot etc as a little kid in the early 80's....even though all the innuendo and references would have been over my head.
@DANNY DIRE hahaa :-) thanks for the comment Danny - I miss the 80s a bit and Kenny is a big part of that for me. I remember my dad almost choking laughing when Kenny did the Rod Stewart sketch and his bum gets bigger and bigger as the song goes on. I was about 8 or 9 years old I think and absolutely hysterical laughing :-) Nice talking to you Sir- merry christmas.
He found another way to kill himself. National Treasure. What a loss. I still almost poop myself watching his DIY handyman videos. Sid Snot, what a guy: "I come from a broken home - I broke it." Hilarious Kenny, very much missed by his inumerable fans, of which I am one, and that will never change.
As the black British comedian Richard Blackwood says. “ it’s not the same as being black, because when he reached 19 he didn’t have to say to his parents. Mum , Dad , I think I’m a black man.” Unfortunately they both have their individual difficulties because of narrow minded bigoted people. Hopefully one day the words of the Emperor of Ethiopia to the League of Nations. Until the colour of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes. The same can be applied to the bedroom practices of a human. I have heard there was no prejudice until Queen Victoria lost Albert and decided to make homosexuality between men illegal but she didn’t mention women. They promote these prejudices to keep the majority population divided and fighting each other. To prevent our unity as we might notice that they are extorting us and take the control and money off them.
