Mallory Park was the venue for an astounding gathering of iconic motorcycles and racing greats, and now you can experience the incredible sights and sounds of the VMCC’s 2011 Festival of 1000 Bikes. This event saw Grand Prix legend Kenny Roberts return to the track, joined by many of the sport’s biggest names.
Buy the Barry Sheene tribute t-shirt: bitly.ws/3a5vb
Join more than 20,000 enthusiasts at the Festival as we see the motorcycles and meet the stars in this highlight-packed DVD review. There are interviews, close-ups of the exotic machines and, most importantly, plenty of action-packed footage of famous, significant and simply spectacular bikes on track.
www.dukevideo.com/prd1871/Fes...
On the first disc we hear from experts, organisers, exhibitors and famous guests including ‘King’ Kenny, Giacomo Agostini, John Cooper, Steve Baker, Phil Read, Graeme Crosby, Sammy Miller, Jim Redman, Kork Ballington, Tommy Robb, Niall Mackenzie and Alex George.
We also meet the men who keep important historic machines in working order, including Phil Morris, Mike West and Ferry Brouwer of Yamaha Classic Racing Team, and see their glorious motorcycles up close.
There are highlights from seven track sessions, and we haven’t added commentary so you can thoroughly enjoy the roar of classic motorcycles in action. Among the sights and sounds to enjoy are Miller with the Gilera 500, Mackenzie on a Yamaha TZ250, Baker on a Yamaha OW31, Redman on a Honda CR750, Charlie Williams on Yamaha TZ385, Ballington on a Kawasaki H1-R-A, Read on a Yamaha RDC05 A, Mick Grant on a Suzuki RG500 and Trevor Nation, Terry Rymer and Ian Simpson on Rotary Nortons.
Plus, Ago on the MV Agusta 500/3 goes head-to-head with Cooper on the BSA Rocket 3 in a 40th anniversary celebration of the 1971 “Race of the Year”.
Of course, we are treated to glorious footage of Roberts on the iconic Yamaha OW60, including a bonus feature of more than 20 minutes of on-board footage courtesy of King Kenny.
The second disc features Return of the Kings, a chance to hear the legends who attended the 2011 Festival reminisce. Roberts, Agostini and Crosby recollect the great races, rivalries, danger and controversy of their eras. There are contributions from Steve Parrish, Alex George, Mick Grant and archive footage of these icons in action.
As a bonus on the second disc we have extended interviews with George, Ago, Croz, King Kenny, Grant and Parrish.

It's great that Roberts and Sheene were able to become good friends. I was a late comer to motorcycles, 30 when I started in dirt bikes, but I did get to see Roberts race the dirt in person at Santa Fe Park, which was near my house and at Indy, Du Quion, Peoria, before he left for Europe.

I'm younger and also came to MotoGP 2 years ago, didn't know much about the sport's history. Watching these old clips I'm struck by how raw and direct the scene is, these days it's more managed and contained. I couldn't imagine the riders digging out one of the Dorna administrators on camera like Barry Sheen at the start of this clip. I don't necessarily agree the racing is THAT much different, I think that's probably a side effect of growing older and the good old days, although there is a lot that has been lost in the culture of the sport for sure. The new version has its appeal in a different way, more tech and militaristic somehow.

I find it curious as Kenny was wearing a Goodyear cap. At that time I was working as an apprentice at the Goodyear factory in Sydney Australia. It was behind Rose hill racecourse. We had a heap of slicks stored there no one wanted. Story was they would blister at high speed, ie Conrad.

New to the bike racing (motoGP and other series) fandom, I have found watching the older races where the announcers didn't talk through the whole race, rather only announcing key events etc... seems so much better. IDK... as I said, I'm new..

Poor old Barry. Like any real racer all he ever wanted was to get on his bike and race and being surrounded by officious officials just got on his tits. I'd seen the clip below a few times before an Aussie mate told me that the commentator was Barry Sheene after he had moved to Oz because the weather in Britain gave him such pain in the nuts and bolts that were holding his body together: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fooox6hbjzM.html
