The figurative expression most easily missed in the song is "the gambler, he broke even", which means he died. In gambling, "breaking even" means to leave the game with the same amount of money you started with. As it is said, you come into the world with no material possessions and you go out with no material possessions. This meaning is confirmed when it is followed by, "in his final words, I found an ace that I can keep". The gambler died in his sleep on that train shortly after this conversation concluded, just as the song said, "the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep". Now, that's story telling!
The gambler offering his wise words went the way he wished for. Good reaction to one of the best legendary singers in history. Life is within this one as well. Appreciations for sharing this one.
You should go back with Kenny to when he was primarily a Rock singer! He sang with Kenny Rogers and the Fifth Dimension! The song, I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In! KR has reinvented himself many times! He is also a fairly well accomplished actor!
i was 8yrs old when this came out. dad bought the album. my two younger brothers, my older brother , and i played it over and over! drove momnnuts! Gambler, Coward of the County, and Lucile are my top 3. love what yall do!
Worked in Lakeside, California outside San Diego, California, after work some days I would go up the hill to the Barona Indian Casino, Kenny Rodgers would do promotions and commercials for them, one-time at a promotional appearance he said to us you need to know when to hold em' and know when to fold em' it got a good laugh, 🤣 Great Reaction👍 Peace and Love❤ 😅Gary your 70 year old forever hippie ✌️ 😊 On the Kenny Rodgers Slot Machine I never won!😢
Kenny is the best story teller in songs. As Dominique said i can see the story unfolding as if I'm watching movie. Just as in The Coward of the Coùnty. As many times I've heard that song it still brings a tear to my eye.❤❤❤
This was so much fun guys, thank you so much for another great reaction. You can't not love Kenny. You're right, the gambler wasn't giving him advice on how to win at poker, but on how to win at life because he could tell he was troubled, his final words of wisdom, in exchange for his last sip of whiskey and his last cigarette, beautiful. ✌❤
I love Kenny Rogers, what a great voice and what a great storyteller! This is a fantastic song, with such a great riff and chorus! Thanks so much for your reaction, yes, I would also have loved to have this song a bit longer! 😊😊👏👏
Kenny was an absolute genius. A classic song. He was an incredible storyteller, with a great, distinctive voice. Not much more to say really. So sad that he's gone. All the greats are slowly disappearing and it's quite depressing. Anyway, another great reaction folks. I knew you'd love it. Thanks for the recommendation.
Enjoyed the reaction! And yes, the legendary Kenny Rogers is a wonderful story teller through his music. There is a song by him I know you two will absolutely love...called Lady. There's a live version you'll enjoy❤
@@MerchantOfAlba Fantastic!! The song was written by Lionel Richie of the Commodores. We all attended college together including my wife who grew up with him and Ronald LaPread another band member. Great memories of those times.
This is for Dominika, a throwback to the 70s, try some "Kenny Rogers and the First Edition" the song "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" or maybe "Ruby" enjoy.
I used to play online a few year ago. I was addicted. It was a legal game. I was pretty good. You spend real money to buy chips and then after I was $17K in the hole I stopped. I really appreciate your reactions. I check your channel almost every day. I appreciate you two. Clearly in love.
Just commenting on my favorite reactors video for the algorithm. Great stuff as usual. Thank you.... Oh, and I'm patiently waiting for Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty".... 😁
You were basically right. From this song, a few movies series came from the popularity of this song, In the song, he is NOT the Gambler, but he was 'The Gambler' persona in the films series. He is a fellow poker player wanting to learn from a Top professional player. Blink and you miss that the Gambler died as he wanted, in his sleep. This is "The Gambler he broke even" part of the song.
I have known several gamblers in my time. Some made money, some didn't. But even when you make money, it's usually just a stake for the next game. A game where you may lose.
Plus, if you count your money at the table, everyone else knows how much you have and it reminds them of how much they’ve lost. Let them sit and think about it too much and you may not make it back home again.
If you haven't listened to him before, Marty Robbins is another great American Country & Western storyteller. I suggest Big Iron and El Paso. Listening to those songs is like watching a movie.
you sit at the table and you're dealt in. The game is "Texas No Limit Hold'em". You have Ace 7 off suit and you're under the gun. Do you "hold'em or do you fold'em"?
I know you reacted to Islands In The Stream lyrics but you should watch the live video (26M Views!). It's amazing! (cut and paste) KENNY ROGERS & DOLLY PARTON - ISLANDS IN THE STREAM - HQ Audio
No ma'am, you don't want to learn poker! There are too many highly skilled cheaters out there and you're too naive and sweet so you would be an easy target for them. Another fun video from the twoof you!
When i go to the casino, i only take what i can afford. I think of it as entertainment, not an income. As you, i work too hard for my money to just throw it away.
I love your reactions but on this one you may have lost the point. Check the time stamp from about 4:15 to 4:55. The gambler says, "the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep". In the next line the gambler puts out his cigarette and goes to sleep. Then in the darkness, he broke even, but in his final words I found an ace that I could keep". The Gambler died in his sleep right there on the train! Your facial expressions tell that you both got the point but with the three choruses of "know when to hold 'em" pushed it away from mind. Most don't make the connection the first few times through. I'm another 70 something hippie who just loves old music. See if you can find an early Kenny Rogers... With the First Addition. "I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In."
READ THIS Please listen to Allison Krauss song is When you say nothing at all. Please make sure it is the official video it is the best version of the song. Thankyou.
People think poker is about lick, poker is a game of skill.not lick.. you play the person and learn how to read they're faces and reactions.... there are strategies and knowing the odds helps...
KR does a great version, and obviously a huge hit. But on this one, I actually prefer the original version by the great Bobby Bare. Its bared down... without all the bells and whistles. I mean, KR didn't really change much in the way he sings it, but again.... just a matter of taste, I like the Bobby Bare 'bared down' ole skoool original version..... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RPgOnLeZFPw.html
