The ScareHouse ("Pittsburgh's Ultimate Haunted House") created the next generation of Kennywood's iconic dark boat ride: The Old Mill.

The Old Mill at Kennywood was first built in 1901 and remains one of the country's oldest operating dark rides. The ScareHouse team was invited to design and produce a new version of this old family favorite, bringing back western-themed scenes and gags from previous versions of the ride. The 2020 version of the Old Mill is truly packed with recreations and references to Kennywood's past, present, and future.
Our new story follows the latest adventure of Harold - a big-hearted but bone-headed bandit with a penchant for mischief. (His name is a reference to Hardheaded Harold’s Horrendously Humorous Haunted Hideaway - the name Kennywood used for the ride from 1974 through 1993.) Within the Old Mill we've created a world in which skeletons go about their business alongside various woodland creatures such as possums, snakes, and coyotes. We follow Harold (distinct from other skeletons due to his piercing blue eyes) as he hitches a ride on a train looking for trouble... which he finds by way of sneaky skunk. After a series of misadventures Harold and the skunk join forces to rob a bank ... it's a Stink Up! So now can they stay out of trouble long enough to getaway to their hideaway?

Love it! That’s awesome how Kennywood brought back elements from previous dark rides and incorporated them into this one! That clip at the beginning really makes me miss Le Cachot. Nicely done Kennywood!

Thanks! Our Creative Director has been going to Kennywood for decades now and made sure we packed the ride with references to previous versions of The Old Mill as well as Le Cachot, Noah's Ark, Hoot N Holler, and The Gold Rusher.

I have autism, ADHD, and severe anxiety. This ride is perfect the way it is. The gentle guitar music, the rocking of the boat, no loud scares, an easy-to-follow silent movie type story, or you can just make up your own, and it's dark. I love to ride this. I don't care what anyone says, as long as it stays the way it is.

Well done! Great mix of the Haunted Hideaway, Le Cachot and the Gold Rusher. Lots of Kennywood dark ride history! I saw someone complaining about the blacklight stuff, guess that they never rode a Bill Tracy ride in the 70s!

They should bring back Le Cachot and the Ghost Ship. Both of those were great but Ghost Ship was better. There has to be blueprints somewhere. They could re-create them.

I suppose it was inevitable that the park would keep the Old Mill kid-friendly by today's standards. I miss the days when dark rides were actually scary and parents weren't afraid to let their kids be scared. But glad to see this rare vintage attraction brought somewhat back to its roots.

Its not like the original old Mill was scary lol. If you want "scary" , you should check out The Haunted Mansion at Funland in Reithbooth, or Terror Ride at Lagoon. Those are two very well done Haunted house rides that are actually scary.

I am going to be a bit critical here, but I expected more. The closest jumpscare on here was the train with whistle and it was already past you when it went off. Some photocell/motion detected lighting or some pneumatic animatronics could really improve some of the stunts. You dont need many, just enough to keep people on their toes. Considering it is the first year and with the pandemic, it is still a big improvement from Garfield's nightmare....

It didn’t start as Garfield!! This ride has been around since 1901 or 1902. It was the Old Mill before it turned into Garfield, now it’s back as the Old Mill and I couldn’t be happier!!

I really like it! There's plenty of references to classic Kennywood dark rides (especially Le Cachot, the coyotes from the Gold Rusher have returned at last, there's even a cheeky little sleeping orange cat for funsies,) and it reminds me so much of the old Bill Tracy dark rides I've made a hobby of traveling around the country to see before they're all gone. I remember the Old Mill back when it was Horrendous Harold's Hilariously Haunted Hideaway and then the Old Mill the last time around, and apart from the lack of outdoor scenes, maybe a few more effects that move, this is really quite similar. Something I dearly love, being fond of old silent movies, is the title cards. It's giving the ride a wonderful early-silent-movie feel. Might add more piano, though, when you get a minute, and maybe some jumpscare-ish startle-y bits in the darker tunnels if you feel like it. If you put them under a ride operator's control so they were activated only for older and more mature guests, you could have a lovely family ride for boatsful of little kids, but still jumpscare the pants off the teenagers and young adults. Or maybe ask riders how scary they want it as they board and have a blacklight reactive number hung off the front of the boat that tells the operator whether to activate none, some, or all of the extra effects. Could be neat.

@@SLOTHSRIDEUNICORNS That's...why I suggested it be a variable experience, so riders could request the setting be 'mild,' 'medium,' or 'scary.' More choices allow older rides to last longer and be preserved better, while giving riders the freedom for those who like scary things to enjoy them, while letting those who prefer their skeletons comedic and friendly have them how they like. A lack of options is tyranny.

I'm so happy it was updated! I miss the animatronic life-like characters, though (like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland). The Old Mill's animatronics fascinated me and sparked my interest in robotics. I understand that they are likely expensive and few places make them these days...

FAIL. The real Old Mill doesn't need lousy glowing paint. This is nothing like the Old Mill from the 70s & 80s. Need to find some old footage and see what the displays really looked like. Anyone calling this a return to the Old Mill has Garfields Revenge etched in their brains forever.

I've never been to Kennywood, but I think Garfield's Nightmare was much better than this garbage. I loved the theming and the story of it, but again, I hate how cheaply and quickly it was thrown together. Sure, most of Garfield's figures were 2D, but I think that they did put a lot more effort in to it than this. They were on such a tight budget for this garbage that they reused quite a few things from Garfield's Nightmare and the lack of music definitely adds to the cheapness, but again, I've never been to Kennywood, I have just seen a lot of videos on Garfield's Nightmare.
