Kentucky PIE-d Chicken (Making a chicken pie from KFC takeaway)

I bought a big bucket of fried chicken, but I really do prefer a pie - so I took it all home and used the takeaway as the starting ingredients for a family-sized chicken and sweetcorn pie

Wow, Going back in the time capsule of RU-vid and watching one of Mike's 4 year old videos, you can see (and hear) the amazing improvements in Mike's videos. Sound Quality, Video Quality and production values overall have improved hugely, but even this older video still has the really interesting core of 'create problem solving to self imposed challenges' that many of Mike's newer videos follow. Still a fantastic watch. Keep up the good work!

This reminds me of how I'd deal with Thanksgiving leftovers. My housemates used to call it "the fortress of turkitude": Cut up leftover turkey and mix with any corn and green bean casserole left over, then layer it in the bottom of a glass baking dish and drizzle leftover gravy over it. Over the top of that, sprinkle with crispy fried onions (if they were any - and there usually were, since they're a typical topping for green bean casserole). Then top with mashed potatoes and, lastly, whatever stuffing was left. Pop into a 350F oven for about 45 minutes.

This is not a negative question, but do the onion skins provide extra flavour, or was it a matter of convenience
@AtomicShrimp

A bit of both. You can actually make a very rich onion stock from just dry onion skins, water and salt, but it's also lazy/convenient to not peel them

Using the onion skins is also supposed to give a darker color to the stock.

BLODDY BRILLIANT using the skin n french fries!!! I freaken love this!!! Ive resourced my KFC for chicken pot pies or butter chicken or chicken noodles, or chicken salad, ive used the skin to cook in my sauces..then i just lift the skin out after I've gotten all the flavor out of it..never crossed my mind to boil the bones n bits with sn onion n seasoning to make a broth. That casserole looked AMAZING! ..all i thought of how incredible that topping had to taste..thank you so much! ! This is a really great recipe! !

Whenever I use stock for making gravy I make a roux/bechamel first and add the stock as needed ^.^ If I didn't use enough flour to begin with (I prefer using to little to begin with anywho, since running out of milk/stock sucks) I'll add some cornstarch mixed with water to thicken. The pie looked great btw, and great use of the bones! I seriously need to get better at using bones and making my own stock instead of using cubes 😁 It was also great to see you left the skin on the onions - When you use a sieve there's no reason to peel it, especially when it's clean like that. When I boil "red sausages" (if you google Rød Pølse you can find an english wiki for them 😅) I add peppercorns, onions and vinegar to the water to help make them taste better ^.^

Normally you go to KFC or something like that, to save time in the kitchen. But I like what you did, won't do the same though, but it was nice to look at. I sometimes mix eggs with crisps, no need for salt or pepper, the crisps are already seasoned, I just stamp them to almost powder. Mixing some crumbled potatoes through, extra. And some crumbed meat (mince). Then some flower for making bread. Everything mixed together, in a mold, in the oven, there is my version of a "meatloaf" The seasoned crisps are basically the question what kind of flavour you wanna have for the loaf, because the seasoning is quite hefty on it own. I love your channel, especially where you try to save money. Like the 1 pound 1 day 3 meals thing. Except, I would like to see you doing it WITHOUT the extra stuff supposable free like butter, mayonaise, curry patches...

Mashed potato is good for thickening gravy. Because the consistency of KFC gravy is variable, when I used to have KFC with gravy (before the heart attack & quad bypass :( I'd get a small potato & gravy as well. Dump that into the gravy & it thickens it up nicely. I have frozen mashed potato in my freezer, but instant would also work (more than likely what KFC uses anyway).

@@aaronm.5063 Just use your imagination. Start with a crockpot. You saw how he made the stock. Just buy some extra broth for volume and put the veg in. I usually use mushrooms, onions and spinach. You can add your faves. Once the vegs are getting tender, add seasonings along with the chicken. If you buy the mashed potatoes, add those too, because they'll thicken the soup if you like it like that. Add noodles, whatever you like. The sky's the limit. Not much use for the skin and coating though, so munch on it or just get the baked stuff.
@mollynakamori
@mollynakamori Год назад
Next, fish out the onion bits from what remains, boil all the bones again for several hours. Then put the whole lot into a very strong blender like a Vitamix till it's liquid, and it makes a wonderful supplement for dog food. I call it sludge and my dogs love it. Eva will too. All the salt and fat are out from the first boiling, so it's all nutrients. I usually add a bunch more veggies to that second boil - sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, etc.

in the end, everything in that dish was just a KFC bucket + a jar of KFC gravy + water and onions to make the stock + the flour used to thicken the new gravy. So I'm guessing it's still around the same calories per serving as you'd get in a serving at KFC
