Nice video. I recall the early 90s when the Kenwood R-5000 competed against the ICOM R-71A, JRC NRD-535, and the Drake R-8. I opted for the Drake, but all were fine radios. My 1991 Drake R-8 still kicks butt. I will shortly take delivery of an ICOM IC-7300 for RX. Can't wait!
I still have the r5000 I originally purchased back in early 90’s. Still working and just started comparing to my new Malahit DSP2 I finally got yesterday after a 2 month wait. Nice find and a Great video!
Thanks for testing the R 5000 from Kenwood, i like all your receivertests on youtube and it is with great pleasure to see that you also support the second amendment.
Nick,, in case you may not have seen this!! Notes : * Beacons are being decommissioned at such a rapid rate that many listed here may already be off the air. By 2026, most of these beacons will be gone with only a few left, __mainly in remote areas. Also, it has been noticed recently that many decommissioned beacons have been unexpectantly returning to the air (I call them "zombie beacons"). Note : There are no longer any beacons operating in Colombia, Cuba, Dominicana, Guatemala, Martinique, Montserrat, El Salvador and Turks & Caicos.
Thanks for the comparison. Keep coming up with these excellent videos. I like the r5000 a lot but.... it is tough to find one nowadays without problems. So I let them pass if I see one at eBay. 👍👍
Your Back!!!! Great Video, thanks for getting us EXCITED again!!!! 🙂 Robert OH!! BTW, their appears to be someone to your right, outside your window, with a rifle!! I think he wants to steal your R5000 radio,,, be safe!!! LOL
Well impressed with the Kenwood R5000. Especially up against the EK070. Kenwood made the R820 which is a much earlier ancestor to the 5000 this had variable bw tuning, pbs, NB, and I think got a fantastic review in one of the UK SW magazines looking back at classic models.
Hi Ron thanks for the kind words. Well this aint no 8711 but it is a great table top receiver. They are so old now that you should only get ond that has been repaired. Google Jahnke Electronics
Shoot out between a Racal 3790 DSP receiver with 100 user configurable bandwidths and you're NRD 545, RX 340, R9500 and the 8600, 8711 and RSPDuo It'd be a good shootout but the 3950 RACAL may be rairer to find than an 070

I have bought many radios from him. He is a great seller. I will buy from him again. But I am sure you know that even if it is working perfectly today it can stop working tomorrow and no one can control that. That is the risk of buying a 30 or 40 year old radio
Did you have the 6khz am filter ? I have the R820 all filters in and truly to say its better than the r5000 and dont compare that shit pc radio pls lol gr de ON3MK Maurits 73,
