I guess but we didn't have unsustainable debt until the SGR debt came along which along the other issue is the interest rates for that loan are apparently very high and may be the reason despite the president insisting on doing an interview with NTV and promising to release the documents with the details he never did.
@@anthonymutua1003 no debt is “unsustainable” when the borrowing is based on the future earning of the country. The catch is that the economy must grow. If the economy can grow at 10 percent per annum then the output (including Govt revenues) effectively doubles in about 7 years. Investing in your nation during an expansionary economy is basic common sense.... then along came Covid!!
@@jaywhoisit4863 But if there is no reasonable scenario that justifies the growth rate, especially with the SGR not extended to Kampala...if the rates are higher per ton carried each kilometer than elsewhere in the world...then there is a fundamental problem.

If you look at the way the SGR was built up on earthen embankments with a multitude of overpasses and spans you can see the wasted money. The leadership just cannot seem to make educated investment decisions which benefit the nation. It’s upto the commercial private sector to do what the government cannot....growth of our economy!

Japan's debt is internal, in yen and thier treasury bonds have negative interest rates. They also don't invest in unsustainable white elephants at three times the normal cost and then force people out of work when the project is not competitive and can't pay for the loan by decreeing compulsory transportation by rail. That the difference. But Kenyans fanatically voted for the people who did this to them and some STILL want to do so again. So how do you help such stubborn, self-sabotaging people? 🤷🏿♂️
Absolutely. But also, education is at a very low rate in this country. Try explaining to the average man on the street these complex matters and how theyre being shortchanged, and watch the nonsensical tribal arguments that come back at you. Were doomed.
It's hilarious if you think that any vote in Kenya counts. These "elected" leaders are not your choice nor are they mine. The reason we end up with thugs and greedy people at the top is because (1) nobody with any modicum of morality or honesty would ever want to be a politician in such a corrupt country and (2) they steal, murder, lie and cheat their way into the seats. Voting in Kenya is a delusion to feed the egos of powerful despots. There's zero democracy in our country, we just say that there is to pretend we have adopted a "fair" system to give the common man a choice... but we all know the truth. We are just disposable moving parts in THEIR game.
Just watched this on NTV Kenya and it's shocking. I think many Kenyans are not really aware of our state of debts. Many Kenyans don't really understand he implications of these debts that continue piling up. It's so sad and I think if we all tried to understand these issues at a more in-depth level maybe there's something we together as Kenyans could do

Just watching from Scandinavia. But spending time in Kenya every ear for the past 12 years. I cannot understand why you don't elect the right people. You like politicians who are all talk and little to put behind their words. And you don't hold them accountable for anything. Very, very unlike most of western countries .... Impunity is a word I learned in Kenya. Corruption is a phenomenon that I got to know in Kenya.
Yes, but again i ask myself if the train was so help transport Containers cheaply and faster, i expected the so called Transported products at least to cost slightly cheaper that's how we can all benefit. All the projects in Kenya are aimed at helping the rich to be more richer. GDP cant give a clear picture of the status of a nation. Only economic Development can tell the truth.
NO! Kenya's main issue is Kenyans. We choose the corrupt leaders. We do not demand much from our leaders. We are as corrupt as our leaders. Our pastors are corrupt. Our doctors are corrupt. Let us not lay blame on inaminate objects like corruption. It takes corrupt people for corruption to occur.
We end up forgetting the only two tribes that matter in Kenya/the world is between the Poor and the Rich, once people put tribalism aside then we can fight this "rich" as one n make a better Kenya for the next generation
@ShutterDe DON politicians merely adopted children of the rich. Eat in benefits but no inheritance. Once they done with politics if they didn't make for themselves go to their original tribe, the poor. Same as those who support the system ie. Musicians, media, millitary
Kenya is so fucked! These mega-projects should be stopped for at least 10yrs. Audits are done then the habit of over-inflating prices for everything manze...as a youth am so fed up with how things are run in this country!
Kenya has suffered from a symptom based management paradigm, which mainly focuses on curing the problem symptoms rather than addressing the main causes. Taking a crisis and turn it into a tragedy.
Think about Greece and Spain, there is a lesson to learn from those two countries. Also, one should realize that road overhaul (transport) is not sustainable, those transporters should have been given a chance to buy stocks in the SGR project.
If the road transport in not viable, then why has the govt been trying to force containers onto SGR? Why can't both be open to competition? Under normal circumstances, what you are stating should have been correct. But due to corrupt inflation of costs, SGR cannot now compete with road truckers
Spain is socialist. They did trains to impress the masses but losses are huge now. Kenya needs to divorce projects from politicians and let economists do the work. Firing squad for corruption like China does will end the vice
Port of Mombasa was used to secure Chinese loans, (collateral loan) that is the main reason they constructed inland port in Naivasha, Mombasa port will eventually become China port.
China ain't stupid my friend, they own the port in Mombasa, they own the sgr, they're probably the ones constructing the one in Naivasha and Kisumu. They're very strategic(long term) in negotiating contracts, and are about to put a squeeze on us. We tried warning people way back before sgr and thika sh, but most of our people are short term focused. We are going the way of Zambia.
It doesn't matter. This is a sovereign loan and must be paid. It is immaterial what the collateral might be. Secondly, I think you are getting it wrong. The dry port could have been constructed anywhere along the line if it was just to get away from Mombasa. There are good reasons why it was constructed at Naivasha. There is an expose on you tube on that. Just look for it and you will find it.
Son of a traitor of the freedom struggle. That Kenyatta family is a cursed selfish family breastfeed by the colonizer to keep Kenya poor to allow exploitation from foreigners of our national resources
I actually like that you don't need to compare with Japan to realize we are in deep. Just look at our economy, comparison isn't the answer, respectively that's a really bad answer.
You cannot compare Japan to Kenya. Japan can at least print out its money to pay off the debt and Japan is Americas ally. Kenya pays of its debt through the dollar which is bad because that can cause an inflation crisis and Kenya and Africa as a whole the economies are not strong enough. Africa has 34 currencies which are the weakest currencies in the world
Is the railway the sole reason for growing Kenya’s debt? Building a rail line through Kenya has never been cheap. Ask the Brits. They called it the lunatic line.
Quite literally siasa mbaya maisha mbaya as Moi would say. When do we decide to change all this at the ballot? Having watched this will it influence Kenyans to wake in 2022? Tough times ahead for all of us, we MUST wake up
Former president Kibaki will go down in history as the best president Kenya has ever had in as far as matters economy and government spending are concerned. The heavy and unnecessary borrowing by uhuru's regime has had devastating effects not only to the economy but also our currency, no wonder the shilling is weakening by the day against major currencies. May God bless Kenya a leader like Kibaki.
This is sad. It has been predicted that next year 2021 will be a n economic breaking point (implosion) for Kenya... Public finance and public debt must become an important consideration for the ordinary citizen because these things affect his/her life directly.
I liked this documentary. I feel like it had a lack of depth concerning the Mombasa SGR issue. For instance I think the SGR is more expensive than road trucks for businesses. The SGR was meant to pull businesses into using it not forcing the, to use it. I think if this was covered in more in detail would have had a greater effect. I enjoyed the Kenya Airways expose the depth was amazing.
It would have been great if you drilled into the numbers. That would explain better why the debt may or may not be a problem. Otherwise, great content as always.

Though I don't like this government, this documentary is very shallow on the whole issue. SGR was obviously going to leave several casualties. The issue of corruption, poor governance and impunity is what ails this country the most. also not to be left out is a bloated public service and our so called "elected representatives" because they are just too many of them
Well stated! Let there be public participation. The SGR contract is so dirty that Uhuru cannot make it public even up to now, yet it is the public who are repaying those inflated, corruption driven costs!
We've lost many souls from our highways especially trunk roads personally I've lost friends especially Mombasa Nairobi highway it was full of trucks and buses .blackspots like Maji ya chumvi and sultan Hamid claimed thousands of Kenya. But since the advent of SGR things have changed no more deaths and maiming accidents.. Better I loose employment than life.that's my personal view.
There is nothing wrong with SGR! The "S" stands for standard. The world is going standard, train engines and locomotive coaches are going standard, and standard is the way to go. The complaint has been that Kenya's SGR cost was varied by almost 50% from the figures signed in the MoU by the Coalition govt. The loan repayment therefore includes cost if corruption hence the need for the govt to arm twist importers to use SGR, wapende wasipende! That's the issue!

To those saying that corruption is the issue I personally believe its not major issue here.. The fact that money is not a subject taught in school is the real issue.. We vote for politicians who are not financially literate and thats what's costing us.. The foreign debt.. If not payed then we'll be forced to default on the debt and that means China taking over major assets owned by the government.. The only way to solve our public debt is by printing our way out of it(inflating our currency) and that will have serious consequences.. The fact that a graduate fresh from business school or any other faculty can not properly differentiate between money and currency shows u how illiterate we are... I think the only way to solve all this is to have the subject of money taught in school..

I know this is going to be an unpopular perspective but I'm betting on Kenya. There are two perspectives of debt. One is the strict numerical structure. The other is potentiality. You have to take a risk to make things happen. I personally believe in what Kenya is doing. I'll accept the risk of being an ignorant fool and a prosperous risk taker. I've come to learn that I'm in good company based on FDI stake holders. It's not about what makes strict numerical sense right now, it's about the instincts surrounding our economic spirit. Sometimes faith trump's science. I'm one of those idiots who believes that.
Debt per se is not a problem. The problem is the massive corruption that went into the SGR and similar projects like Arror and Kimwarer dams. The original MoU that was entered into by Kibaki govt for SGR was clean. But when Uhuruto govt took over they cancelled that MoU and signed a new MoU/Contract that was inflated by nearly 50% above the initial cost. The graft component was intended to compensate the homeboys who had financed Jubilee campaigns in 2013. The graft in SGR did not just happen. It was right there in the contract. It was there by design. That's where the problem lies.

Reading the comments below I can't help but think Kenyans lack critical thinking skills. The lorries and their owners have experienced what the American truck drivers experienced when the rail came. They need to innovate. Did the rail king vanderbilt not sell all his vehicle interests and move into rail? What Uhuru has done is right. What would have been the option: to stay in the same position? Debt is necessary and what he has used it for is right/ Infrastructure. Now Kenyans can have a commodities exchange and sell their goods internationally. Vegetables will trade like shares on the commodities exchange. Farmers will be the new middle class. Look at how a commodities exchange has changed Ethiopia from a starving country to a food exporter. Farmers have incentive to produce as they are not restricted to local buyers. This is how food security is achieved. Has anyone noticed how many multinational organisations have offices in Nairobi? General Electric Africa headquarters is in Kenya. How did Mwai Kibaki manage to build roads, schools universities with little debt, the answer is sound management and integrity, much of Uhuru's debt goes into inflated tenders and a few pockets.
That's what explains why the MoU that was signed by the Kibaki govt with the Chinese had to be cancelled and a new one signed with the Uhuruto govt with 50% cost inflation. It was grand corruption at play.
