If you have a GOOD exotic pet shop near you, they may be willing to help your mom get over her fear. It is in their best interest after all. Snakes make the best pets IMHO. Quiet, don't smell, shed hair all over, destroy your things, demand much attention or any affection, easy to feed, the list goes on.

You should check out hognose snakes they’re the most adorable little things ever with their derpy little shovel faces plus they’re very unlikely to bite as a defensive measure. They flatten out their necks like a cobra and throw little hissy fits and mock strike meaning they strike but with their mouth closed and just boop you with their snoot.

Was thinking of getting a corn snake as a gift to myself for getting through my first year of vet school. I need a low maintenence pet that didn't really care to much about me handling it, besides being food giver. I didn't want to be neglecting it when midterms and finals picked up because I wouldn't be able to handle it and only feeding them once a week was a big bonus. I knew a snake would be perfect for that. I saw this when it came out and after doing some more research I decided to change my mind and go with a Kenyan sand boa instead. I couldn't be happier with my choice. I didn't even realize these existed before I saw this video. I was worried the corn snake would be a bit to active for me to handle while i studied but the sand boa is perfect it doesnt move around to much and if u have to put it down for a moment it never goes far (if anywhere). I can't remember if you mentioned it in the video but these guys can be difficult to transfer to f/t if they were fed live before you got them. I didn't realize mine was being fed live until I got it and it was a beast to change over. It took 6 weeks of it striking and letting go and me having to change what I was doing to make sure she was interested the entire feeding experience until it got all the way in or she would push it back out. They can be changed over but it will take a bit of research and asking around for what others do, planning how you are gonna present food to the snake that week before you do it, and a lot of patience while you might wrestle for an hour to get them to finally give in and eat. Even with this issue though I am really happy i got this snake thank you so much for making a video about it because it wasn't even on my radar before.

joshua lieberman hi! I really want a snake and am thinking of getting a sand boa. But I’m just wondering if they bite, will it cause me much pain or damage or is it just a little nibble? If so, do you know a pet snake that doesn’t bite or too small to hurt anyone?
@finch2613
@finch2613 5 лет назад
@@evar5831 when they bite it is comparable to a cat scratch. dont even need a bandage usually. of course it depends on someones pain level if it hurts super bad or not. if you get one get a male. they get smaller and therefor will not hurt as much with a bite. the kenyan sand boa isnt really known to bite often anyways unless its a food thing. if your really worried about a bite though get a rubber boa.

For the sand issue, if you're willing to do it, it's always possible to have one half with safer substrate, and the other with sand. So they'll get some of their preferred substrate, but they'll also get a safer substrate that'll be a great place for the water bowl! This may also be my aesthetic loving side

He has been with me for a couple months now, and he is entering his first shed with me... he is just perfect! Eats every week eagerly, super calm while handling, super curious, & very, very cute!! During the day, I usually only see his little head, but at night, he really starts to stroll about! Couldn’t have asked for a better first time snake! Thank you for helping me decide; I already know he won’t be my last/only Kenyan Sand Boa!

"Availability" as a decision factor seems a lot less important than the others. Once you buy it, it's doesn't matter. The other factors are life-long. Maybe "Availability' shouldn't be weighted as heavily as the others. It seems like "Care" is almost as important as everything else combined.
@ClintsReptiles

Don't put too much weight on the overall score. Every animal we have recommended is the best pet reptile for somebody. Not being able to find one can be a deal breaker for some people.

@insaynt9924
@insaynt9924 6 лет назад
It can play a part in some people's decision making, and is therefore good to consider. Also the videos are meant to be as informative as possible, so part of why it's brought up is to make people aware of however hard it may be, and gives the host a chance to elaborate on where exactly they're available. With both of those things in mind, and using myself as an example, I would really prefer to buy a reptile directly from a reputable breeder, to ensure they're in good condition, and would prefer to do so at a reptile expo. That's partly to ensure the animal, again, is in good condition, but also will help me pick one partly based on whether or not they bond with/get along with me, as that does tend to vary from one individual to the next, and I don't see a point blindly picking one that may hate me. Reptiles that aren't obtainable from an expo, or may be harder to find, do end up lower on my mental list of favorites, just because of how heavily I prioritize those factors.
@sandravenneri768
@sandravenneri768 5 лет назад
Well, I think it is an important factor, because if you want one, you should know how many are available and if they are at your local pet store.

I've been trying to get a pet snake forever and my dad has always said no. But finally he gave in and said I can get a snake if I buy it with my own money and care for it with my own money. I'm getting my first ever pay check from my first ever job in two weeks and it's all going towards buying a snake. It'll only be about $150, but my nearby Pet Expo has a baby sand boa that no one's buying. I took my dad there with me to look at the Rosy Boa they have right now, but it's albino and $300 so I wouldn't be able to get it for at least a month and by then it'll probably be bought up. But the man showing off the Boa said "would you like to see our Sand Boa?" My dad fell in love with that little snake. It's just a baby right now and it's so stinking cute. I have a 10 gallon tank right now, a heat mat, and an old water dish. So all I need is the substrate, food, and some decorations (and a lid for the enclosure, but I don't think the lil guy would be able to get up to the top right now anyways. But I don't want to risk it). I have no clue what to feed such a tiny snake so I'd have to ask, and he costs $100 so I probably wouldn't have enough to buy everything need. But I think my dad likes it enough that he'd buy the first batch of mice and then I could buy em myself afterwords. They're not a snake I ever considered getting before today, but after holding it, seeing how pretty they are, and watching my dads face light up as he held it, I definitely want to get one. It's amazing how one interaction can change your whole view on something.

@@justinlong6847 I did not 😅 My first paycheck ended up being smaller than I expected, and by time I would have saved up enough he was gone. Instead I decided to keep saving up. I convinced my dad to take me to the NARBC Tinley Reptile show for my birthday in March (it was held just a week after) and I brought over 500 dollars for a snake alone. I ended up buying the snake I truly wanted from the beginning, a hognose snake. His name is Hades and he's Diablo line het albino! Currently about to upgrade him from his temporary 10 gallon on aspen shaving into a bioactive 40 gallon enclosure!

For people wanted a bit more details on substrates dehydration and shedding issues are very common from people using sand because in the wild there is moisture underground that they spend a lot of time in and pure sand wet is no good cause it clumps up so you want a good mixture of reptile top soil and play sand but if you want to try something simpler and easy to clean you can try the zilla walnut (sand alternative) but I'd still only use it for temp and emergency enclosures and make sure to have a moist hide of moss for em :) you can also look up more mixture details for different purposes.
@karinascreatures3865
@karinascreatures3865 6 лет назад
Also, something I've found in my experience that weighs heavily on the care-difficulty is the humidity the species requires. If you live in a dry area (like me) you need to mist the enclosure at least once every couple days. This can infringe on that vacation time you generally have with snakes and is important to consider when selecting your perfect pet snake. Cheers!

I was pretty sure I'd get one next but I feel like rosy boa is going to be my next snake :) I hope there will be a video about them as well, even though their care is very similar to corn snake's. I heard that they're pretty easy to handle, but I'd like to hear more.

I got my first KSB last week! She’s so cute. She’s an anery het albino (snow) and she’s soooo little. She didn’t eat yet but we’re gonna try again tomorrow since it will have been a week since I got her. Fingers crossed!

Even though this is an older video, I've still found the information very useful and still relevant today (2023). Thank you for making this video. I'm currently awaiting the arrival of one of these beauties (sex unknown as yet). I've agreed to take on a ksb a cousin of a friend has rescued from a not-ideal situation and can't keep herself. This will be reptile #15 in my current collection and snake #8. I'm very much looking forward to learning all about this species firsthand. 🤘🏻❤️‍🔥

I like these and really want one but the thing that sucks is my mom HATES snakes. She thinks that they'll get out of a tank and sneak out and says that "they're just so creepy" And I'll probably never get one while I'm living with her which also sucks because I'm at least 7 years away from being able to get my own house. So... yea

Your videos are awesome and entertaining! I really like how you rate each reptile based on different characteristics! Can you do a video like this on the rubber boa? There are a lot of videos out there about finding them in the wild but very little on the care/maintenance of them.

Ah, I love the rough scaled sand boas. But in all these years, I've never officially owned a sand boa. I think it's because I A) never got around to it and B) didn't like how they just stay hidden all the time. I guess that's why I gravitated toward arboreal snakes instead. Still, they are very pretty and structurally interesting. The rough scales remind me of some venomous viper species. Anyway, great video as always.

I just got a 1.5 year old KSB and I don’t think she was properly cared for! She’s been with me for 4 days. Last night she wasn’t very active and this morning when I saw her she was in the same spot. She’s my first snake.

This is a pretty nice and informative video! I was going to go with a Western Hognose, but I mainly decided say, "I think I'll put more research into this" due to its availability and cost. Like... There's more and more being sold, and I saw a shop that sells them from around $60. That's crazy good compared to the usual $250 to $500 I saw on the Hoggies! And with the handling, I have heard of one more downside to be aware of... They aren't the greatest "scarf" snakes. Since they're more used to burrowing than climbing, you need to be careful about letting them climb on your shoulders. Though, really this just means keeping a hand on then for safety and support!
