Nobody is going to see this, but Kenyon is making a great point here regarding assists. We always like to call players who average a high number of assists "unselfish", but the player getting the assists gets credit for the assists in terms of accolades and salary.
@Go21place
@Go21place Год назад
Yea it's the eye test of how those assist are being achieved. That's his point. There's all this analytics but if you're not watching HOW those numbers are being obtained in the game then you're missing an entire dimension of the realm of competing. A point guard like Chris Paul doesn't pass early on possessions, he sets up the offense and decides where and when the field goal attempt will happen. Players like LeBron, Chris Paul, James Harden, they have that style. They want to orchestrate every offensive move while they're on the floor. Then you have point guards like Steph Curry who are willing to give up the primary ball handler spot to the 2 guard or to another ball handler and go off ball with his movement. That creates a whole different dynamic on the court. He's more willing to let other guys make plays. For better or worse. Each style has strengths and weaknesses
@aznnp77
@aznnp77 Год назад
I've only ever heard that negatively with Rondo. I heard her passes up layups just to make an extra pass and get assists to pad his numbers. I used to watch a lot of Jeremy Lin clips though, so I know an "assist" can be a bit glorified sometimes. Like if you pass the ball to someone and they iso and score in a couple of seconds, they consider it an assist. I remember Rodman got a triple double once cuz he passed the ball to MJ and he immediately don't a turnaround jumper.

@jonjack549
@jonjack549 3 месяца назад
How I understood it, Kenyon was saying that he values analytics and the eye test equally, but from his background, as a former NBA player, he understands and contribute with the eye test. From what he is saying, he needs someone else that can find and dig thru the data to bring the analytics to the table, so that there could be a conversation. Keep in mind, he was interrupted multiple times throughout this interview, so we don't have the full picture.

Chris Paul is doing better in the latter part of his career because hes not being asked to be the number one guy and a 20 and 10 player. With the Thunder and Suns, it's more than him being part of a "Big 2" like he was in his prime. The Thunder stint was as impressive as his Clippers years and he's flourishing with the Suns because he's with talents like Booker and Ayton, not to mention other players who can finish plays.

Kenyon brings up a great point that’s missed with high assist players. Some of them only give up the ball when they think they can get credit for the assist. They don’t allow players to cook in isolation and don’t allow the ball to swing around to the best available shot. They hog the ball until they can get credit. Eg. Triple double Westbrook

Chris Paul definitely has a Napoleon complex. He’s tiny and it shows in the playoffs defensively he gets exposed. For years he would create the most ridiculous flopping fouls especially just stop running with a defender right behind him on the break and they both fall down automatic call. Also he would not grab the ball out of another guy’s hands after the play was dead but truly snatch it. Just a lame move. But he’s had a very good regular season career and a couple of decent post season series recently. You have to give him that.

Why are they trying to make it seems like a analytical guy is on the damn basketball court his self playing? Analytics is nothing new, it was always part of a coaches decisions, without having a word for it! It was basically more organic back then and was called a coaches instinct, from a players fg percentage or free throws at certain times of the game, or certain area’s a player may shoot from with a better fg percentage, or a shot taking with a certain defensive player defending the shot, or more simply put Jordan will either make the shot, or pass it to Paxson or a Steve Kerr type shooter, who has a good fg percentage from the 3 point line, than Jordan shooting a well defended two point shot, out of a double team! He didn’t pass it to Scottie for that last second shot, he knew he just needed a sharp shooter on his team! That’s called common sense” and without a analytical guy to tell him to past that game winner or game tying shot! Back then it was called, Jordan needing a sharp shooter like Paxson or Steve Kerr! Lol , Common sense didn’t need analytics to tell him, not to let Dennis Rodman take the last shot!

@@josephschmizzo1595 Literally every stat needs context most of the time 😆. That's why I used the ex. of -15. i.e Tatum scored 28pts w/ -36+/- as a starter & "good defender" that's a bad game no matter "context".
@josephschmizzo1595
@josephschmizzo1595 Год назад
@@Tim_Dunkinnah thats not all the context u need to come to that conclusion though...what actually happened on the court during that time? You HAVE to look at what happened on the court to definitively conclude that that was a bad game. Mar 1st 2022 LAL played DAL and The Mavs won by 5. As im watching the game im noticing what i always notice from Lebron, a hesitancy to disrupt his efficiency which leads to the team being stuck in a rut far too long and or never being able to fully use the offensive gifts of their players optimally. Go back and watch that game and u clearly see Luka outplay and outwork Bron (AND get the W) but once the game was over i was shocked when i saw the statline for both Bron and Luka... Bron: 29 pts, 12 rebs, 5 assts, 55.6% and +7 Luka: 25 pts, 8 rebs, 5 assts, 42.9% and -7 Nobody w even a decent gauge of the sport would watch that game and see how Luka impacted the game vs how Bron impacted the game and dare to imagine that Bron had the better game. THIS my friend is an example of analytics LYING to you and being deceitful. Stats NEEEEED context and NOTHING beats the human eye 😉
@Tim_Dunkin
@Tim_Dunkin Год назад
@@josephschmizzo1595 You used numbers way below my example -7 & +7 are not -36. Like I said you need context for every stat, but no matter the context at the end of the game if you have a -36 +/- more than the actual pts you put up playing 35-40min when other starters have a let's say -10, you had a bad game as an individual win or lose. Not -1 ,-4, -7 NEGATIVE 36. I'm not saying for every game every season. I'm talking unusually high -25, -19, -22 (Westbrook). But whatever agree to disagree

If analytics was so important, it will be able to figure out, what player ass will lock up in the last few seconds of a 1 point lead in game for the championship! So coaches will know I can’t even think about having this player on the court! Lol, PS, What did Analytics say about Bruce brown being thekey player, after jokic and Murray to help Denver get over the hump to beat the Lakers, and the Miami heat! Especially the lakers never planned for him to be that successful, Nor did it account for the joker to hit about five last second buzzer beaters!!!! And Murray hitting about three, Without those hell Murray’s, no pond intended! That lakers series, with a split in the first four, could have had a totally different outcome!
