When I was taking East Asian studies it was harder to get access to videos like this. There was the library but it’s pretty cool you can view this on your phone. I just remember reading his book when I was in college in nyc and would’ve appreciated seeing this footage. Young people studying Japanese in america have it so much easier ...

Thanks a million for this interview. I've just finished reading Oe's A Personal Matter. It is one of most depressing and disturbing books I've ever read. I was thinking it was yet another video of a typical man escaping his responsibilities/own reality. But the book's connection to Oe's life explains so much and already began to change my views on the book. Not sure if I will (or should I say 'can') read another book by him. But thanks to this video, I'll give him a more accurate credit than I would have done otherwise.

Oe's English is fairly good for a Japanese man who were born before WW2. You know he's quite an intelligent figure when you read his writings and he must have read tons of books in English and French along with his mother tongue (btw his major was French Literature).

Guys, let's be honest. If you met him without having knowledge that he's a world class literatus, you'd probably think Mr Lee, a laundry owner comes around to collect coins, right? English is the key in America for someone to have his intelligence properly evaluated among ordinary people. In Europe, more people would try to understand Oe despite the language barrier because Europeans are relatively more intelligent than US citizens.
