On September 20, the streets of Thiruvananthapuram witnessed a Kalaripayattu demonstration. The display was actually a protest organised by seven prominent associations of Kalari masters and practitioners, raising concerns over the Kalaripayattu administration in the state.

Instead of nurturing talent and promoting the true spirit of Kalaripayattu, the federation has become a stage for power plays and favoritism, alienating many deserving practitioners. Such leadership, focused on consolidating personal influence rather than fostering the art, is detrimental to the growth and legacy of Kalaripayattu. It’s high time to free from this monarchy and embrace a more transparent, fair, and inclusive approach.

The payattumura system has just become a "show item" now for festivals and sports events. I've seen many guys who are exceptionally trained in weapons but lack knowledge or experience in real fights. I'd say learning naadan adimura is more practical, now a days. There are still aashans out there who would only pass on the skill within their community (Nadar). They rarely train outside their community. These techniques are taught secretly, inside closed rooms or sheads, unlike that of kalarithara, because the techniques taught are very leathal in nature. Training the body to be a weapon itself. Acquire that skill, and after a couple of good fights, you'll fear no one.

Martial arts are themselves have becomes useless because there are more high tech weapons which have come in the market. A child with a gun is more dangerous than a 60 yrs old master of martial arts including kalaripayattu. So whatever you are saying was bound to happen.

@@Manoj-vp5in we don't see people carrying guns and ammo in most countries. But some countries like in the US, there are daily incidents of shooting and gun fights. If th5e ammend gun laws, its likly to change. In other countries, take India for example, people with exceptional fighting skills have an advantage.

It's more like a dance than martial arts. I've never seen them fight in real, or in a tournament. Kalaripayitu tournaments should be organised like in other asian countries that promote their martial arts through MMA tournaments

Few masters have replied this question. Kalari is primarily a weapon based martial art. Non-weapon based movements are mostly for initial physical development. So its probably not that suitable for sport type competitions

@@sreekx they could still use padded armour and blunted weapons and have tournaments like the European HEMA. The fact is, without live sparring it cannot be considered a real martial art. Anyone who has done even a bit of combat sports can see that those exaggerated acrobatics are completely impractical in a real fight. Maybe the old techniques have been lost with time and today it is only surviving as a performative dance form masquerading a martial art.

We only know till the 18th adavu, we know 19th adavu is a thing but do not know what it is. There were even more advaukal. We have lost them. Also weapons, our traditional weapons we do not use them. The swords used currently are actually not the old types of swords. The hilt, പിടി, it is different, why does it matter, it influences how a sword is being used. Europian swords do not have disc pommel so they use wrist to use the weapon, whereas our swords have disc pommel which forces us to use our arm. Other than that different swords have different ways of using, Other than that, നമ്മുടെ പരിച, ഇപ്പൊ കാണുന്ന ഇഡലി തട്ട് പോലെ ഉള്ള പരിച, those types of shields with five bosses (the bubbles on the shiled) are new, maybe only about 100 years (if I am not wrong). Way before, say for example during the time of battle of Colachel the shields has four bosses and in the center there is a round design and just on top of all these there is another boss like thing this part behind the shield is the mount for the shoulder strap thing. Also the bosses (the bubbles on the shields) are there, behind are the mounts for the straps to hold. Even older shields have only one boss in the center. I mean there have been a lot of changes, we started using europian swords too. What is the "one part" that you mentioned?
