Kerbal Space Program 2 is finally here, this time we are showing the beauty and usefulness of a truss bridge! We set the bridge speed record, land a bridge plane and of course send a bridge into space. It was harder than expected, but nothing the UK Space Agency can't solve!

Hacktually, the web of the steel exists just to connect the flanges when you calculate the moment of deflection of a given profile, the most important factor is the profile volume and the distance from the centroid of said volume. So essentially a UB or UC works by having the most mass supported as geometrically far as possible from the centroid without spending more money on material like you might with a square or rectangular section. Basically have lots of material far from the centre to stiffen a profile in a specific direction.

okay Matt, when will you release your album? that song at 4:37 slaps okay i think i have to say this at some point. i love your dry, ironic humor, where one sometimes isnt sure to think "oh he is actually trying to convey knowledge" or "is he talking utter bullcrap?". and probs to the editors. they really pick up the theme and improve the vibe. i am glad the yt algorithm recommended me that one mini motorways vid back then also something a bit more technical. have you ever asked yourself, why new years firework rockets have these little sticks reaching down? one reason, of course, is to make it easier to launch them. but more importantly, its to make them stable in the air. any surface, no matter if stick, wing or parachute, will create drag, turning the side with more drag to the opposite of the direction the object is moving. or in other words: if it comes down, you want the drag-force above. if it goes up, you want the drag below. that is why rockets usually have wings at the bottom(as they drag the bottom down, to stabilize it going up), or why the spacex boosters have their grid fins at the top(which deploy on descend, to drag the on the top, stabilizing it coming down) fun fact: if you get 2 new tires for your car, you should put the "new and good ones" at the back for the same reason. in the case you start to skid, the better friction on the back wheels will tend to point you forwards, which in turn gives you much more chance to regain control when i first heard of this i was like "oooh that makes so much sense", i knew it intuitively, but hadnt actually thought about it. i hope pointing this out helps some people in some way

A truss bridge with pinned connections loaded at a joint only had axial forces, therefore no bending or shear forces are applied to a given member. A I beam would not be appropriate as it is cross sectional area that is relevant, not the second moment of inertia and so a square or corner beam would have been a better choice

Hey RCE, don't be an architect and put your fins behind the center of mass, you will gain a lot of stability. This applies to most things moving through a fluid. I see you often putting them ahead of the COM and that is pretty much why those planes/rockets flip backwards when they get some speed. The idea is that the center of mass always flies first, and the center of lift follows it. If a plane/rocket flies with the center of lift ahead of its COM it will absolutely want to flip and fly backwards. I absolutely love these videos, but hate to see some of the best ideas fail because of an unintentional canard fin that just makes the bridge unflyable.
@RandyFortier
@RandyFortier Год назад
Aerodynamic fins require air friction to work, so as you get higher and higher in the atmosphere they start to work less effectively.

Highest we see the bridge is at an altitude of 56km. Hate to be a stickler, but "space" begins at 70km. So I think you've got a bit to go there, mate. Also minimum orbital velocity is something like 8km/s, and the max we see is like 1.5km/s (probably got up to about 2 or 3km/s by the looks of it). Still, as a long time KSP player and RCE viewer I love to see the progress here. I want to see a bridge in orbit and on Mun! LETS GO RCE!!!!!!!

Shocked? No. Entertained? Absolutely! That plane was a hilarious abomination, "flapping" its wings to come in for a landing! Copy/Paste/D20 Roll = 1. The devs should name a Kerbal "Picasso" in honor of that bug. Anyway, thanks for a fun KSP2 video while we await major development progression on this mess of a game.
