Kerbal Space Program - Mun Mission Using Only SRB's

Not just any old challenge, but a tribute to the British Interplanetary Society's speculative design for a real life moon rocket published in 1939. ( www.bis-space.com/ )
Before anyone asks, it took about 20 tries to perform the landing correctly, you need to cut the power with a margin of about 0.1 seconds, and I'd wasted all my sepatrons on making sure I didn't land on the wrong side of the Mun.

I just couldn't take my eyes off Corgun Kerman. He was just completely terrified right the way through up until his parachute opened.

I love how he trys the whole, retract/redeploy landing legs trick a couple times, and then is just like "Ahhh screw it." in true Kerbin spirit.

Ahh, if onlythe classic 'bribe your contemporaries with alcohol' technique were more effective... Though considering the lack of reentry shielding, perhaps it's best the great science fiction writers of the time didn't draw straws for a suicide mission. Provided the rocket even made it as far as reentry.

Oh God them wobbly boosters on launch! Priceless, but also one of the little things I hope they can fix.
@Aurasmae
@Aurasmae 8 лет назад
+Slyguy threeonetwonine You fix it by adding struts...
@slyguythreeonetwonine3172

The Aura Tree Yea but you shouldn't need *huge* amounts of struts, or perhaps I was using them incorrectly. Its been a while since I've played KSP.

Good old fashioned storytelling scott manley, humbly pioneering the youtube SRB space race. First bradley whistance’s mission to eve, then stratzenblitz to the moon AND rendezvous. Isn’t it long past time for you to raise the bar yet again, mr.manley? ;)

You know, I'd love some space agency or Mr. Musk or some one to recreate the plans. Obviously this would be incredibly dangerous for a human crew, but just a probe in a correctly weighted capsule on top of the powder rocket stack. Just to see if we can land it on the moon, deliver some coffee for the next manned mission :)

Scott i really liked this video in particular ! You should really make more videos where you are also talking about human space history. Really interesting way to make a video! Hey.. Maybe you should try answering a question regarding astronomy/space while showing ksp gameplay. That would be cool

As CCRLH85 said. One thing to keep in mind is each additional plotted conic is less exact. Usually just 2 or 3 is recommended. Any more and you won't get an accurate enough plot to really know what's ahead.

Yeah, I never had the patience to attempt it in the past, I can't touch Ablu444's flying, he's the Stig of spaceship game. That's why I chose to differentiate the video by discussing the BIS moon lander.

It's not *just* SRBs if you're also using decouplers! :) (...There's nothing like "decoupling" your first stage by firing a second rocket engine through it until it overheats and explodes...)
@mnb134
@mnb134 7 лет назад
Gotta be careful with this method, if you use multiple rockets side by side, they may overheat at different rate and mess with your center of thrust and you will loose control. Some engines like the terrier doesn't generate enough heat to overheat and explode adjacent parts(learnt that the hard way the day i forgot a decoupler).

What strikes me as odd is that they had thought on using peroxide to produce steam for the landing steer and never thought on using that to pump the liquid fuel of the proposed liquid engine. That was exactly what von Braun dig in the V2 :/
