I think this model was probably my favorite one out of this whole series. I didn't realize that they started making it with D2 Steel, so thank you for sharing. I have to get one of these now
Ordered this discontinued model today from Amazon for $41.68. First Emerson design I have bought. Found it looking for a larger frame lock and D2 is a bonus. Good review.
In D2 there’s now zero reasons to buy an Emerson version of his knives. I like D2 a lot more than 154, the fit and finish from Kershaw is better, and you get normal v grinds instead of his backward chisel grinds. This is a great move from Kershaw. Hopefully he doesn’t pull the plug if these start giving him too much competition.
Despite being a bit more XL than I usually like, I might pick this up. The Kershaw Emerson’s are great heavy duty knives for the price. I have a CQC-7K (the tanto Kershaw Emerson) as cheap beater knife and it holds up very well. Works well with stuff like cutting open bags of gravel, concrete or cattle feed and the 8CR14MoV is easy to sharpen. As you state though, D2 would probably hold its edge quite a while longer.
Just got a D2 this week, it's PERFECT, sharp as a razor out of the box. Don't waste your money on an Emerson, I believe this knife is superior, fit and finish is impeccable. With Emerson your paying Alot for the name!
I loved the one I had before extremely tuff folder . Now in d2 fnk awesome and by the way zero blade play I would put thi s knife up against any folder
I was stoked to find the 8cr for 14 bucks and I threw it in the bag 💼 as an extra carry if I needed a pointy tip and didn’t want to loan someone my 16 dollar pilar 😂 to do some prying or scraping. It looks like a good upgrade to D2 but the 8cr has taken a beatttttinggggg and looks new. Haven’t even been able to fade the coating with some good redwood pine 🌲 cuts. Great tip for precision curves and scraping or marking. Thanks Ernest.💀
I think wave features work great. I use a ka bar dozier wirh a zip tie in the deployment hole. I use it dozens of times at a job that is time sensitive. Also a cold steel ak47 is my main edc. The wave on that is lightning fast.
Ordered one last night as an early birthday gift(I'll be 65 soon, God willing). I've wanted to try a knife with the wave feature but not at the cost of an Emerson knife. I look forward to the bigger size of this knife so I can try Limb Destructions with a closed blade that we practice in FMA(Filipino Martial Arts - Escrima/Arnis). The D2 steel is a nice bonus. I have a Gerber frame lock(Cleaver blade) that I like a lot and carry often. So there are a lot of features in this knife that I'm excited about(frame lock, wave feature, blade shape, etc.). Thanks for taking the time to post the review on this knife. It was very helpful..:)
Im not a big fan of Emerson but i like what they are made for, and damnit you are selling me on it, if you was the salesman behind the counter, and its in my hand, SOLD!! 👍
I just ordered one off of amazon. I was at work and in the specific Amazon shop I found with the cheapest price literally had one left. I made it to Walgreens and back to get a gift card to buy it in less than 10 minutes and managed to snag it. I can’t wait for it to show up!
I'm here because I ordered the 6k in D2 yesterday and am waiting for it to arrive. I've wanted this knife for a long time but couldn't justify the downgrade to 8cr13 or 14mov, just found out a few days ago they have them in D2 and for just barely over 40 bucks I had to finally go for it.
Does it ride well in the pocket, or does the size influence carrying comfort? Thanks? I'm looking for a EDC knife for light tasks anywhere from around the house, to the outdoors, that could also double as a self defense option. Was actually looking at two M16s from CRKT (the 03 and the 04), but I've been suggested to look at this one, and at the Kershaw CQC-8k. So now I have the BIGvsSMALLER doubt, and CRKTvsKershaw one hahaha
@@Guy1105Fawkes It rides fine, it doesn't bother me but it is a little on the large size. Great EDC knife, cheap but solid knife. I don't like this type of locking mechanism but it's strong and reliable. Also I bought the knife because of the emerson wave function. You will not find a faster deployment mechanism out of the pocket. I have an Emerson CQC - 15 that I was given from work and my favorite thing about it is the wave function that this knife has. FAST.
I was talking to a friend today about bufget knives getting ugrades.. the Pilar , squid and this. Not my cup of tea but it looks like a well built nice actioned knife with d2. That price though is not bad, however a Ontario Rat d2 would be my pick. i do however understand that probably wont be thebest Responders knife. Knocked it out the park again ,Great review.
Besides the wave I like that model an the 6030 because of the point at the bottom is great for a personal persuader. An if I have to dump it or the run or lose it running I'm not gonna lose my mind like other crazy brands. For the price I'll take it places I won't take my other favorite blades they don't cost a lot but more then that. You should try the other one I think you'd like that better the ergos are amazing on the smaller one. They do sell aftermarket deep carry emerson clips nice review haven't seen anyone do it still
I just bought the old version before I watched this video, crap. Oh well, I will be picking up the d2 model, I had the old version and lost it. This knife is great all around as far as design, for me its perfect.
No, price went up by over 3x lol. Used to be able to get any of the 8cr models for 16 USD and sometimes you still can. Someone commented below that they got theirs for 14.
I was reading that Emersons were chiseled ground that is the only sharpened on one side? I looked at my copy of this folder and this seems to be the case. Do I only sharpen it on one side? Do I use the 40-degree inclusive edge? I'm using the spyderedge sharpener. Thanks
These knives are weird. The more I open, and close them the more the blade moves off center to the non-locking side. I’ve adjusted them, and replaced the washers with phosper-bronze. Nothing works.
I just got an Emerson Seax. It’s great!! Screaming sharp and very big which I prefer. I’m tall as 🤬 so 3” knifes will cut my palm when i open. Might have to get this i do prefer hollow grind
Did extra screws come with it too switch the clip? I want to reprofile my original and realized the steel is hard and going to need extra time to do it.
I love the knife but hate the wave! I grinded the wave off of mine. I maybe the only person in history to have done this but I don't like a knife to open itself. I had a bunch of instances where the blade would not fully deploy because of the wave and would cause a bad situation. Example: drawing the knife from your pocket while sitting in a vehicle, it never goes right with the wave. Just my experience, I have carried this knife for about 2 years on and off and decided the wave had to go.
There are 2 ways to open a wave knife... with intent, and with complacency. You should never open with complacency, and a wave will never ever "open itself".
@@sn0fx like I said "my experience" not saying everyone will have that problem. I just don't like knives with a wave. My opinion only. Feel free to feel differently
@@SliceyDicey perhaps, I hear they are still hit or miss. more so than Benchmade. the only one I've handled was gritty, but I hear neroknives, supersteelsteve, and alchemy1 enjoy theirs
Note in what a useless grip that have to be adjusted all waved knives ends up in. They just get the blade out fast, you are not ready to use it any faster. So...crap.
@AugustWest a couple days ago I opened a glass bottle of beer with the glass breaker of my Benchmade AFO 2 and it broke the top of the bottle. I didn't notice at first and took a chug it felt weird on my lips and when I looked it was broken. Good thing I didn't drink glass or got it it my eye 😲
I got the 8cr version during Blade HQ's blackfriday sale last year. It was so cheap I just threw in the cart for giggles. I rarely carry it. I may give it away at some point.
