So I was navy and worked on F14s for a very brief time before they retired them in 2004/05 and then the F18 E/F in the navy for a fighter squadron out of NAS Oceana. Around May 2007, we were at Fallon Nevada, where we start our work ups. we were there for 30 days for training , out to the east of the base there are some smaller mountains, I am looking at maps now and I would say around the area of SAR Mountain and Grimes Point Archaeological area some lights appeared around twilight, looked like bright search lights but attached to nothing, made no noise and they just sat there over that mountain. After about 20 mins 2 aircraft scrambled loaded and armed, being ground crew we hurried and got the aircraft up, after the aircraft took off by this point being night, the lights vanished followed by the aircraft returning and we were all ordered not to speak about this incident. Followed shortly after on May 7th 2007, HS 7 dusty dogs losing a helicopter “on a training accident” I’m not in to conspiracies but this incident has stayed with me to this day and has always bothered me. The division officers came around and ordered us to not speak about this incident and to this day, I have friends who either served or still still serving bring this time period up time to time. Anyways thanks. Update to this, I looked up the news story from this and it stated that the accident happened 10 miles to the west of Austin Nevada in central Nevada, that is 89 miles east of Fallon but in the same direction of the lights that kept appearing. They claimed that the helicopter hit a high power line, but when we were on the ground we were told the helicopter just lost all power and hit the ground, Just always has bothered me. I don’t want to reveal myself out of fear of retaliation but I gave you all the facts of that week at Fallon. Do what you will with it.

If we made a sling shot type arm that is width adjustable. They could grab them and use momentum to throw them out into space. Reuseable and cost effective. by using a catapult they could use simple spring loading or simple hydraulic systems for a launching system... Like we launch jets off an Aircraft Carrier. Yet with all of the geniuses working in the space community, no one can come up with a viable solution to clean up this mess. LOL You know, this would be a PR Dream for Glad trash bags. I'll explain... What if Glad in conjunction with SpaceX & NASA, created a compressed, yet highly expandable & durable Space Trash Bag that would be deployed by a new updated space craft, designed and built by SpaceX, to replace the old NASA shuttles, so that they could collect all of that dangerous space debris and launch it towards the sun! 😁👍

14 tons/day Al in atmosphere - why is this significant against the 10 tons/day meteoric flux that occurs continuously? Even if that Al flux continued for 100 years (my imagined duration of a Kessler cascade) it would be less that a billionth of a percent of the atmosphere - it would be almost unmeasureable, basically, negligible.

This video is a funny thing. Just last night I was talking with a coworker about our greatest fears. She said "Spiders, but big spiders, like spiders the size of a hand or a dinner plate." It was very typical and I kinda giggled at her response. She said "Well, what is your greatest fear, Mister Tough Man?" I simply responded "Kessler Syndrome" and she had no clue what it was. Cue a 10 minute explanation of Kessler Syndrome and how it is a very real possibility and why it is so terrifying to me. Outside of total nuclear war, Kessler Syndrome is truly my biggest fear. It would basically end modern humanity as it is. It's almost impossible to clean up, and prevents us from ever leaving the planet. If that's not terrifying to you, then you have to think bigger. Imagine 2,000 years from now when we actually have to leave the planet, but we cant because of a deadly cloud of projectiles that we made.

I know issue for space travel is mirco particles hitting the ship at high speed and a heavy enough piece of shielding isnt practicle from what i understand to take the impact. Could it be possible to use a high powered laser (like for rust removal which is tiny particles) to generate a shield of sorts in front of ship to protect from micro impacts by destroying the particles before they can impact the ship?

The alarmism about contamination of the atmosphere is unnecessary - the statistical probability of a debris cascade that stymies access to space is bad enough. After this happens, the only access to space will be via armored lift vehicles. Starship may remain usable if it can devote a significant proportion of its 100 tonne lift capacity to carrying enough armor to survive ascent and orbit.

Y'all understand that the the space surrounding Earth is much greater than the entire surface of earth in size, right? And that you can continue multiplying the surface of Earth by x2 for every few meters "up" (further from Earth) you go in space. The surface of Earth acts as a 2D plane whereas space is a 3D plane so you can go higher or lower in space and create a whole new linear plane that is greater than the entire surface of Earth a second time.. and again for another time and again for another. Try covering the surface of Earth only with stuff we've put into space. Careful not to underestimate the size of our planet (which is large enough to be incomprehensible to any human brain). Knowing the values of Earth doesn't mean you comprehend its size.

I find this particular 'threat' to be a little overblown. There are two fixes I see, 1 easy and doable now, one more futuristic. #1 There is a LOT of orbital space around the earth. Low earth orbit is crowded? Launch to higher orbits and do so more carefully so there's no debris cloud generated there. GETTING there might be a bit more dangerous having to pass through low orbit's debris field, but we have computers that can calculate safe trajectories easily enough. #2 all SF spaceships have 'shields', energy fields coating their ships protecting them from meteroid/debris strikes as well as space weapons fire. We start seriously developing these. The theory is known, several concepts are predicted to be workable. So lets get Star Trekky for reals!
@tomcollins5112
@tomcollins5112 2 года назад
The problem with going higher is that the debris will stay up there longer... like millions of years. And also, the more stuff we send up there, the more we pollute our atmosphere. We should probably stop sending things up into orbit until we actually do develop star Trek technology, which could take centuries.

Time for an entrepreneur to develop a space junk removal vehicle. Besides the valuable metals, I’m certain there is some priceless technology in some of those satellites. I remember back in the 70’s Andy Griffith did a television movie about just such a venture.

lets get a big asteroid to orbit that zone then set it on moons orbit, that would cost to like all the money in the earth but eh

Why? Do you only use Starlink or something? Except for that the internet is 100% terrestrial with cables. Cellphone network towers are also on the planet and not in space. Do you live in a fantasy world or something? The kessler syndrome only means that it will be hard to do space exploration but is absolutely irrelevant for any mindless consumer normie doomscroller. YOU will not even notice the kessler syndrome happening.

starlink satellites are in low orbit. it wont stay up there very long without power.

The solution to this: a ring of matter. Putting a ring of matter into orbit, will attract the debris. The heavier, the better.

The problem is getting heavy items into orbit in the first place ...
@PolyMadd
@PolyMadd 2 года назад
@@Jester-Riddle ye of course... I don't think we have the technology for that yet. I mean, we have it, but it's far too expensive for the amount of material that should be put into orbit.

We have been cooperating in space for decades now. The problem is that our science has created problems that we didn't anticipate. It seems like all the unnatural things we create wind up polluting our fragile natural world. Maybe we're short-sighted and not cautious enough when it comes to science.

Starlink is considered to be in a very low orbit, basically if they run out of fuel it won’t take long for them to deorbit and burn up in the atmosphere leaving no debris in space.
