I worked in Bldg. 101 on Gemini 9 when this happened. Had it not occurred on a Sunday, I would have either been in the White Room or my office which was located directly under the roof where 901 hit. My office was off-limits for quite a while while things got repaired.

Its nice to honor a heroic man, but the title should have been "The Russian who would have walked on the moon if the USSR got there first." But clickbait rules cyberspace.
One of the few times I think the AI voice over would have been better. Weird speech cadence, trying to sound too dramatic, and grumbling instead of speaking clearly.
The Soviet Union never came within 237,000 miles of the moon. They tried to launch their N-1 lunar booster three times in test flights: it blew up every time.
I was a journalist in Russia, and I met Leonov once in the 2000s and talked to him. He was periodically invited to various official events as a guest of honor. So, we had a little time to communicate with him outside of interviews, in a free environment. I can describe him as a very closed person, he spoke very little and very formally, carefully choosing his words. He was self-absorbed and not open to communication, and he was afraid to say something unnecessary. He was very careful with journalists. I think I asked him something about God, he said that almost all Russian cosmonauts were believers, although at that time they did not advertise it. But now he could say it
lol I love how this channel likes to TRY and make Russia look better than the USA. However they NEVER succeed in doing that. Russia definitely deserves credit for being the first man in space and lots of first. But they rushed everything and put their cosmonauts in danger trying to beat America. In the end Americas patience and smarts proved to outdo Russia in a big way. Russia never got anyone even close to the moon so the title is wrong to say he 'almost' walked on the moon.... he actually never had a shot.
You don't land someone on the Moon with Soyuz, you need a much bigger rocket and the N1 was that much bigger rocket but it never successfully put anything into orbit as it had a habit of blowing up. The N1 was to be the Russia equivalent and in some ways it was superior, but they never got a handle on their engine. NASA struggled with the F1 engine as its thrust was very high, bigger than anything now in use. But, they figured it out and the F1 never failed in flight. So, no, there was never a Russian who almost walked on the Moon!
I was working at the McDonnell Douglas Huntington Beach plant and saw the rollout ceremony of the DC-X in 1992. Later I worked on a NASA contract to build and test heat shield concepts of the X-33 (1995-96). Unfortunately, the Lockheed version of the X-33 won over the MDC X-33 competitor.
No. The moon, like Antarctica, belongs to all of humankind, not to any government or private party. Outer Space Treaty of 1967 and subsequent international agreements. And a lunar military base would be absolutely useless for any purpose, unless youre defending against alien invaders, a la the "U.F.O." tv series of 1970.

"Near nuclear" For context: this explosion released somewhere between 2 - 5 TJ of energy. The fission device detonated at Los Alamos on July 16th 1945 produced 100 TJ of energy....the Tsar Bomba, the largest explosion created by man, had an approximate energy release of 210 - 240 PETAjoules. ....near...nuclear.
At around 2:05 in we can see the plane with its hood up. The mechanic was probably checking the dip stick or filling up the washer bottle😁 Joking aside, another insightful video from Dark Space.
