This trip, we have the campsite to ourselves! Storm force winds and rain did limit our ability to take advantage of it but Kestrel Lodge campsite in north Lake District national park, near Keswick and Bassenthwaite is a real hidden gem!!
Our small VW Camper van did feel a little smaller during the bad weather but it didn't stop us exploring the local hills and woodland, whilst marvelling at the beautiful autumnal colours and small waterfalls.

I went to the Lake District after my wife died in 2013. So pretty. We rented a home in Hawkshead near Ambleside and trundled around in a little Renault for two weeks. Such pretty country. There were two nice pubs in Hawkshead. Lovely people. I’d move there in a minute if they’d have an old man.

There’s room for everyone in the Lake District. No matter which pub you choose in the Lake District, they’re always welcoming. The atmosphere is so homely and inclusive 🤩

Unlucky with the weather. I used to study forecasts before I went the lakes and sometimes they were close , but it's so unpredictable there. At least you had an experience.Nice food and beer . I've been in Snowdonia and you can get some shocking weather there .

Mac n Cheese were a go-to when my kids were little. A little ham, onions and garlic did the trick. Another thing to try is black beans. Great stuff

😄😄 we’re at least 40,000 subscribers off being noticed by Fjallraven. Sometimes, knowing the weather is bad yet your van is allowing you to still enjoy your surroundings is a blessing, especially in a remote area such as wasdale 😍

We love going away in bad weather! Hunkering down with a brew, biscuits and the pooch :) we love playing games, Yahtzee is our favourite, Dobble is great, we also have a travel connect 4, dominoes, travel benga, banagrams - anything two player and travel size 👌🏼 love you guys and your videos!

Blimey you were unlucky with the weather! Still can’t beat winter camping though. We play scrabble when cooped up. Glad we don’t have a pop top to worry about any more but still get the rocking during storms, we had 70mph gusts this year 🤢

We were possibly lucky with the weather too, certainly makes your surroundings a lot quieter 😁 Lack of poptop is a key factor for us considering a larger van. It’s nice to have the same space despite the weather… one day hopefully 🤞🏼

I love a bit of bad weather when I'm in the van and that location looks ideal. It's a bit odd but I didn't receive a notification for this post!? I'm sure RU-vid are testing us 🤨. There is a lad in our office who loves Lego. He is obsessed with the stuff and spends a fortune on it and, to be honest, some of the stuff he builds is fantastic. I've often considered buying some for the van for those isolated trips but I'm pretty sure I'd end up with far less pieces than I started with after Raffy had eaten a couple of bricks and others had rolled under various fixtures. Great vlog guys.🤘

Cheers Mal! That weather would be much more enjoyable in your palace 😆 Downside is, that site don’t allow vans your size. RU-vid has updated recently so maybe you need to click the notification thing again. Lego is a definite no go! I don’t have the patience, like Raffy, Jack would certainly eat some and I know I’d end up standing on a piece in the morning 😖

Could you imagine that early morning Lego surprise!! 😂 Upon reflection, I think I agree with you. As I mentioned last time, I'm no longer receiving notifications for your vlogs. I didn't notice your reply until I checked for another vlog this morning. As such, I don't get a notification for a replies either now. Certainly something wrong with YT at the moment. Great video! Want something to do? Try a small board game... Very enjoyable. We'd suggest "Lost Cities", "Jaipur" or "Kingdomino", "Ticket to Ride". All very easy to learn, around 20 min in length per game so you won't get bored, don't take up much table space and pass an evening.

Though its cold, I quite like getting out, even if it's a short drive up to the peaks for us it's allot more peaceful and atmospheric, sometimes I just sit in the van and poke the telephoto out and snap the wildlife, regardless it's just nice to have a change of scenery. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. PS. Are you sponsored by Fjallraven? I've always fancied a wool beanie but I have a big 63cm head and wondered if that brand comes up nice n large in the hat section?

Completely agree! Bad weather certainly comes with its own merits, atmosphere, peace & solitude and, a very different landscape. Unfortunately not, Fjallraven have no idea who we are but my bank balance knows who they are! I have a couple of their beanies, the woollen one in this video, is called Byron. This one is a larger fit and wool naturally gets a little looser over time so it’d be worth trying one on 👍🏼

I love a lock in at The California Arms. Only issue is the walk to the toilet after a few beers. 2 options to keep occupied on a wet day is a board game’s compendium or an Anker Nebula Capsule projector 😊

😄😄 yeh, the toilet walk gets a little too often the more you drink too! Board games is a good shout, been tempted by a projector but they’re not cheap and, we use our MacBook for RU-vid etc so the jury is still out on that one 👍🏼

Thank you 🤩 I wouldn’t fancy towing a caravan in bad weather conditions myself, upside of having a small Campervan is it’s similar to driving a car so we’re lucky that we can continue to get away in winter ❄️

We have and use both the internal sucker window blinds and the external blind as well. We learned our lesson at Sango Sands campsite at Durness with high winds. If there is any grit and / or sand blowing about, it gets under the external blind and makes a large roll of sandpaper with the wind flapping it. It caused damage to our paint work that we had to T- Cut out. It also doesn't blind the light continuously in the wind, whilst flapping. Now we only use the external blind in predicted still, dry and cold weather and the internal blind other times.

That’s a good shout on the sandy/windy conditions! We’ve now realised, this blind is just a hindrance in strong winds. Luckily, the VW California comes with its own internal blinds so we’ll be using them in forecasted winds. Downside is, the condensation but we can live with that 😁

Great video as always. I do like the way you just get out there and get on with it :-) We're new to van life and haven't done a winter in our van yet, but it does make me think we should just get on and do it! Really like Dalesbridge campsite, stayed with them a few times and it's really good in the summer months when Ross opens the bar and they do the pizzas. We're heading there for new years eve so looking forward to that. The pub at Austwick serves lovely food and is dog friendly as well.

If we didn’t get out and get on with it, we’d be twice the size we are now 😂 You definitely should winter camp! Find a campsite with really good, well heated facilities and it makes camping so much easier. Dalesbridge is great, we sampled the bar and the pizza 👌🏼 someone was putting their pizza order in for new year while we were there 😄😄

Of course you can. Best thing to do is find a campsite with high quality toilet block which is well heated and, a nearby pub. That way, if you don’t want to be stuck in the van you can get out and still be warm. Braithwaite village club site near Keswick perfectly fits that bill 👌🏼

It’s always windy inside the van with jack & Sarah 😉 It’s the perfect place to get away from it all sue. Access road is long so you don’t get passing traffic or any other disruptions 👍🏼

Brilliant! We’d love to revisit but, stay in a yurt. We’ve got plans to walk the Cumbria way one day too (when we’re fit enough) so would definitely stay here 👍🏼
