Great honest review. The new Ford Nugget looks better as it still meets the requirements of a family. This won’t anymore sadly, but probably good for couples.
This reincarnation of the California is definitely a car first and camper second. One burner hob is useless for a family and the double sliding door means the interior storage space is severely depleted. The VW marketing team will tell you it’s bigger and better but it clearly isn’t. It’ll sell loads because California’s always do but it’s a day van not a full blown camper like the 5,6 or 6.1. I think they are attempting to attract a different kind of buyer for this model. It’s certainly not suited as a proper camper van for a family. I’ll be sticking with my 6.1.
Very well said, indeed.!! Great spin about new chassis... hmmm, from Golf, and no 4motion anymore.... what a disappointment but that was announced a long time ago. I will also keep my 6.1 4mo I just bought. Aha, and storage space is greatly reduced in the new California. Vehicle is also lower which probably will make an awning(s) lower and restrict the movement under them for taller folks. Also.... how about safety ratings, crash ratings, exiting 6.1 was very high rated and the new one? We need to know that. in the early 2000 in America, VW was selling full camper (Winnebago conversion... I had one for 17 years) and also so called "weekender' more like a Beach version in Europe. This is a weekender in my eyes. For short trips without "stuff" and cooking plans.
@@pawelkepinski548 100% agree with all you’ve said. I think VW have took a backward step with this one. I suppose only time will tell but I suspect all those people with the older Cali’s will see the used values go up.
Worst California ever. Since VW decided to create their own camper vans without the help of Westfalia each generation is worse than its predecessor. The new nugget or the marco polo are much better options. And the T7 looks awful.
Well I’m glad I went for a 6.1 and didn’t wait. You’ve not done a review it seems on a 6.1 but you’re are comparing such as we only go away in lovely weather or hard standing/firm pitches. So steep Italy/Spain sites are out, Norway, Scotland basically restricted to when the weathers fine. Mine is versatile, the Grand Cali style box next to the sliding door is horrible.
No more camper van it's just mpv now , crazy expensive mpv . For this amount of money ppl can buy something a lot more sensible. With two burners and a proper toilet + lots more storage and can stand up while cooking or bathing . The previous model is so much camper-like , simply way better.
They haven’t actually released pricing yet. It’s expected to cost around £65,000, with the plug-in hybrid Ocean model possibly costing an additional £15,000-£20,000. Orders are expected to open in October 2024, with deliveries taking place around the end of the year. Yes! I really think Slovenia is an incredibly underrated country. We still saw such a small amount of it as well!
The new 2025 transporter would have been a better option bags more room i hate to state the obvious but this vehicle is giving you less than the outgoing California 6.1 and for more money, always keep the customer happy i say ,why didnt Volkswagen do a consensus with California owners in what they would like to see in its new carnation of the new Cali, ok the new transporter has some ford parts but it will be the VW badge that will count and the converters will turn it into what we would want a new version of the cali 6.1.
They messed up on this one. Kitchen is too small, awning is too low. Not enough storage. Second door is a waste of space. Two burners would keep those who want to do some real cooking happy as well as those who don’t. Now you can’t cook. Just boil some water for tea or heat up a can of beans. Not enough ground clearance no real 4 wheel drive (4 motion). Wish I had bought a T6.1 before they ended production.
It's definitely a no from me. This is a day van, with day van storage, day van cooking facilities and a day van fridge. I'll be sticking with my Ocean 6.1 4mo
What is the pricing for this, Tish? It's a shame that they won't/can't sell it here in the States, though. It looks nice (especially with you showing it off!) and would be perfect for camping around where I live. ☺
I think you should have researched the market better before publishing your “experience” of a campervan. They are used all year round. It’s normal to have 2-wheel drive and many get stuck in the mud even in the summer. The space for inside storage is poor compared to the previous model, and to have the water tap inside is a mistake.
It’s a Fairpoint, but I do mention at the start that I do not have too much experience experience with camper vans, so I think you can hardly fault me for something I’ve already mentioned and pre-warned about. That’s good to know about four-wheel-drive, not being a dealbreaker, I did ask for peoples opinions on this. Just curious, why do you think it’s not a good idea to have the water inside?
@@AutoSocialUK Not sure you’ve ever filled up the water tank, but it isn’t straightforward. You can put a hosepipe in the neck, but you need to be careful with the pressure. If you want to fit it full, there is no measure, and water will flood out. There are devices to help fill , and they often leak. Having the water filler on the outside means you don’t get water inside. I have a T6.1 California and have learnt it’s not straightforward.
I completely understand your frustration, but it does genuinely make moving around the cabin so much easier. I guess what they should’ve done is give the option of either two sliding doors and a smaller kitchen or the one sliding door and larger existing kitchen and storage space??
Anyone who bought a T6.1 California will be laughing all the way to the bank when/if they want to sell it on. VW have seemingly dropped the ball with this new one, it's uglier, less room, less practical. Oh dear.
With the right person ... this might be a dream-vehicle ... for travelling all over Europe ... with only one night per week in a hotel ... for a proper bath ...
I like the two tones exterior painting ... with the white 🤍 on the upper side. 👍 Of course, I would wrap the lower part ... which is (boring) grey on the camper presented ... in a nice metallic purple wrap film ... 💜

Vw have gone in reverse more storage in t6 fridge on top pot pan store gone bench seat gone sorry vw it's has far too many compromises go back to what made the outgoing model the success it was nice looking van but that's all.
