Kestrel Trap

Trapping Kestrels is fun but can only be done with a trapping permit, and bird handling experience. Doing this without the proper licensing is illegal. Kestrels are the smallest North American falcons and thus, are very delicate and need to be handled with care when trapped. They are also very common, and have a great temperament for falconers. Beginners often train kestrels as their first hunting companions and hunt small birds, rodents, lizards and insects.

Beautiful birds ,I found a baby when I was a kid and i got to keep it for a while. My dad made me set it free after a couple weeks , it was young and weak when I found it. I sure hope it did good and lived a good life .

You need more weight on the trap. Any nearby Red-tailed Hawk or an large accipiter could carry that trap and kestrel off and both birds would be in trouble.
@hebdomatical
@hebdomatical 4 года назад
I second this opinion. A large hawk would have no problem carrying this trap away which may be a death sentence for the bird if unable to get free. A large piece of plywood as a base or teathering the trap to the ground would be good.

Yes. American Kestrels are supposed to make very interesting birds to hunt with, but their weight management makes them rather difficult birds to use for people who aren't used to working with small raptors.

People trap raptors for the sport of falconry, another form of hunting. This is totally legal so long as you have the proper permits.

I have seen many videos with this method of capture and I have always found it interesting that the mice never seem particularly alarmed while the raptor attempts to get at them from the cage. Is it because they know they are safe or are the breed of mice used for this just that docile?

So, I guess it didn't really get trapped until the very end when one of its talons finally got stuck? I though it was funny how the bird would freak out when one of the mice (or rats, IDK) would touch one its talons.

all you need is fishing line, small chicken wire or pet square cage wire. you already see how he had his. any way take the fishing and put loops in it. make sure the loops you make are the type that will on close all the way and hurt the bird. you should be out when you set the traps as well. other wise the bird could hurt itself. we use like 20-30 looks all over the cage part. trying to get to the mice it will catch itself in one or many of your loops. again you should b there it might get hurt

That's a beautiful female in the video, looks like she was in excellent feather and fine condition. My male AMKE was looking over my shoulder at the video and thought she was hot stuff, too! They are difficult to weight manage, but it IS possible. BTW, Siskin's Bits and Bobs, learned much of my knowledge of falconry and bird husbandry from someone from the UK. Mind you, folks in the UK can keep and breed owls in the most horrible of conditions when they are one of the least suited families of birds for being "pets".

I don't understand why so many people in the comments are pissed that they "hurt it" because they obviously didn't. They just realized how cool this animal is and realized the only was to get close enough to one is by trapping it and looking at it yourself. And that's exactly what they did. Then they released it back into the wild.

@@ClosedOnSundays6 Yes a lot of them die in the first year but most birds tamed by falconers can't be released to the wild again because they would either search human proximity too much or be helpless when it comes to finding their own food because they're learned their food comes from human hands.
@ClosedOnSundays6
@ClosedOnSundays6 3 года назад
@@apalala4166 this is simply not true wild trapped bird can be fed up and released anytime. That is one of the advantages of trapping a bird instead of buying a Captive bred bird. Also these birds are used for hunting and provide there own food
@apalala4166
@apalala4166 3 года назад
@@ClosedOnSundays6 No, a bird that has been caught young and then raised by humans will never be able to survive on its own in the wild. This is why many birds from falconers never get released, only the injured adults that are nursed back to strength or conservation-programm birds that have specifically not been imprinted on humans are able to survive.
@ClosedOnSundays6
@ClosedOnSundays6 3 года назад
@@apalala4166 wild trapped birds do not become imprinted. That is only something that happens to eyas. I could go outside right now and let my bird go no problem and he would live just fine. We teach them not to become relent on us for food but that we will flush birds for them to catch.
