Great to hear about your work. My experience is affirming of your experience. If people use medication alone they will survive but they won't thrive. They may well still have their headaches, anxiety, depression and arthritis… Keto is the poly drug. Something that I have been really emphasizing is that this is a prescription strength diet and you have to be very careful not to listen to folks that say a treat here and a treat and there won't hurt. The treat might make you have a weeklong setback metabolically. Also treats and really Affect mood. I speak from personal experience.
I've improved my asthma, migraines, back pain, seborrheic dermatitis, enlarged prostate, bowel inflammations, and mental health. But I didn't followed a strict keto diet, but rather just a "low fast carbs and no ultra-processed foods" diet. And I agree that although I eat a lot more quality foods, but my expenses went down. On foods and especially on lots of medications.
If you start helping the urban poor, you will upend the system. Imagine a society where each individual person has to take responsibility for their health/diet. Lots of people won't like that.
This is great! And it would be nice to see more on YT about how people on lower incomes can do this diet. I can afford to eat "good" meat most of the time, but I'm very conscious that a lot of people can't, and I get a bit irritated sometimes with the people going on about ribeye all the time, not to mention grassfed. As the saying goes, don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Dr. Sher, you are a such talented interviewer, you summary brings it always to the point and your questions are with long-term oriented and creative purpose! Thanks so much for this interesting interview. And deep appreciation to Dr. Glandt for her such great contribution! May I ask your opinion on potential resistance of the body to metabolize glucose if one is too long on Keto diet? What do you think about keto cycling (especially for women)?
Thank you for your kind comments! Carb cycling is an interesting topic, and the answer has a lot to do with someone's health goals. Here's a guide that may help explain some of the thoughts behind carb cycling and who may benefit. www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/carb-cycling
Dear @Metabolic Mind - One question for you please: do you have a list of supplements (and which brands) you generally recommend for Someone starting out keto?
Inspiring research but currently at $250 a month out of reach for people not in the study. Why not make a free app in English and Spanish that people could use with their present PCP?
If both diets provide the same number of calories, which one puts diabetes into remission faster: a ketogenic diet or a high-carb, low-fat diet? Or is the time frame the same for both?
The data seem to suggest that a very low carb diet will provide faster and more impressive blood sugar control than a low fat diet. Here are a couple examples. www.nature.com/articles/s41387-017-0006-9 and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9609579/ As with any diet study, there are challenges with adherence over time. The other question we can ask is for those who are most adherent to the diet, which works better? This understands that there isn't one diet that works best for everyone, but for those who truly stick to a very low carb diet, how well does it work? For that question, the nonrandomized trial from Virta demonstrates remission rates far exceeding those seen in any other dietary trial. www.frontiersin.org/journals/endocrinology/articles/10.3389/fendo.2019.00348/full Very low carb isnt the only way to improve blood sugar and metabolic health, but it likely is the quickest and most profound.
@@metabolicmind Hello, thank you so much for linking the studies! I have one last question: If a person is on a ketogenic diet but does NOT lose weight, will their type II diabetes or prediabetes still improve?
The science is a bit all over the map depending on the study. But it's a good assumption that in general, fewer chemicals are better. But the questions people need to ask are, what purpose does it serve and what are the alternatives?
