Ketosis & Fasting: Why They Are So Effective Together- Thomas DeLauer…
One of these dogs is ketosis and one of them is fasting. See, very similar, yet at the same time quite different. What I want to do in this video is I want to help you understand why keto and fasting, not in the case of dogs but in nutritional protocols, work so well together.
You see, a lot of people get confused because I talk about ketosis in a lot of videos, and then I talk about fasting in a lot of videos. I have a ketosis protocol, and then I have a fasting protocol, but the fact is, they're two very different things but they have very similar energy systems that are being utilized in the body, and when they work together, they can be very effective at burning fat.
So I'm going to give you some analogies. I'm going to help you understand the process. You see, it comes down to the fact that fasting is utilizing ketone bodies too. You see, the whole idea with fasting is we're trying to get our body to a point in which it has no choice but to create ketones from our stored body fat.
You see, we're no longer eating, so that means our body takes our body fat and takes those fatty acids and turns them into ketones. It's a pretty cool thing. So by default, when fasting we are in ketosis. So then with ketosis, we are mimicking fasting. That's what's going on. We are mimicking fasting so that we still have the desired outcome of ketones, but we're doing it with calories present by simply removing glucose or carbohydrates.
That's the common denominator. That's how we end up finding out that ketosis and fasting have the same common denominator, the same underlying factor that we're looking for, for the most success possible when it comes down to fatty acid utilization, ketone production and overall feeling really good.
You see, fasting has additional benefits that go in a different direction, benefits like autophagy where our cells are recycling, and other benefits that are going to help your mental acuity, but a lot of them come back to those ketones again, whereas ketosis has its whole separate myriad of benefits; massive amounts of ketone bodies that we are, essentially, artificially encouraging the creation of by copious amounts of fat being added into the diet.
So you see, we're still trying to get the same end result. Fasting can be a little bit expedited because, of course, you don't have calories coming in, so in traditional thermodynamics, calories in versus calories out, plus ketone utilization, you're going to burn more fat simply because your body is using it from your stored body fat tissue versus creating it from food.
But this is to clear up a lot of confusion. Now, we have to talk about how they work so well together, because this is really, really cool. Let's say, for example, you go on a ketogenic diet. You start eating high fat foods, low carbohydrate, and moderate protein. You're generating a lot of ketones. You're cranking in ketosis, you're kicking butt, you're taking names, and you feel great.
The next logical evolution within this process is to start sprinkling fasting into the mix, and this is exactly why fasting should be used intermittently periods of time throughout the week. Now hear me out on this. You're already in ketosis, you're producing ketones, you feel great. Okay, so your body is using the fats from the food you eat for ketones right now.
Then, tomorrow, you decide to fast, so you decide to no longer eat that day but your body is now so preconditioned to utilizing fats because you've been in ketosis that it goes ahead and it starts taking fat more rapidly from your stored body fat because it's already primed to do so.
I've talked about in other videos the whole priming of the pump, similar to like a lawn mower. If you've ever had a lawn mower or a two-stroke motor, a weed eater, a go cart, anything like that, you know that you have to prime it. It's been sitting for a while, you hit that little primer button. You press it a few times, you get the fuel into the lines, and then you pull it and you start the motor.
That's essentially what's happening when you're on a ketogenic diet and you're priming your body with higher amounts of fat. You have now primed the body to utilize fat. So now what happens once it's using fat and you now deprive yourself of dietary fat? The body starts rampantly looking around saying, "Where's this fat that I'm so accustomed to?" So it freaks out, and it has no choice but to go to its next source of fat, which is your body fat, no matter how lean you are. Unless you're at 0%, then you have a problem.

Hey Thomas I love your channel. I have water fasted for 5-6 days a couple of times and it seemed pretty hard. i just lit a fire under my but and decided it was time to loose the fat.Last week I started on Monday with a water fast til Wednesday and then Thursday i went dry fast and then ate keto Friday ,Saturday and Sunday. this was good but i didnt get into keto until the mid day on Thursday. I changed it up and went dry on Monday and i was making large ketones by the end of the day and then am water fasting the next three days.i am doing cardio and workout on the water fast days. IT IS WORKING! i have lost 21 pounds in 10 days. i plan to do this two more weeks to reach my goal.I feel so much better on fast days when i have been eating the ketogenic diet before I water fast. Thanks for the detailed info, based on research.

Thomas, you my friend are inspirational! I had heard people talking about keto and IF for a while now, when I decided to take the "plunge" and do something about my weight, I started searching the internet. Thank God I found you! Your videos are amazing. The way that you are so able to breakdown the science behind what you're talking about, truly blows my mind. I don't know if you will even see this comment, since it is on an older video, but I hope you do! This video was exactly what I needed. I was doing too much daily 16-8. That turned into daily omad. Both methods were being done utilizing keto, but NOW I know that I need to fast every OTHER day, to really reap more benefits, without slowing down my metabolism too much in the process. Huge shout out, from Texas!

Great video. This is what I’ve been doing for a few months now and was finally able to shed the excess hormonal weight. One benefit that makes fasting so much easier when you are already in ketosis. I would love if you could go into the difference of cravings when not doing keto before fasting. Seems like it takes the body a lot of time and energy to get to ketosis, but if you already are in ketosis the fast is way more productive. I sense there is another layer for those who struggle with cravings.

Thomas, thanks for this video. I've been IFing for about two months now, nearly every day. I feel great, look great, have dropped weight and am still able to work out hard. I've also been eating a ketogenic diet as well, sort of as a default conclusion after watching so many of your videos. But my diet is pretty haphazard as far as entering/breaking fasts most effectively. I'd request for a video talking about what to eat as we enter/exit the fast. I know you have "how to break a fast" and how to get back into ketosis quickly videos. I guess I'm saying, more of that. Thanks again!

Ive been doing Intermittent Fasting on and off for 10 plus years and find it to be amazing for so many things. I just need to wrap my Brain around what I need to eat for Ketosis. I’m trying to compile the best list of good fats. I generally don’t get more than 50 grams of Carbohydrates a day into my diet... 5 to 6 days a week average. Ive been a Protein nerd and self proclaimed local expert on the various truly healthy sources, for over 20 years... it’s the Healthy Fats that I am trying hard to integrate... and one of the primary reasons I SO enjoy Thomas’s videos. I dig the science, I just need to integrate it into my eating and lifestyle. Thanks Thomas, please continue to do the Amazing work you have done educating people. TJ

@CyrusTabery
@CyrusTabery 6 лет назад
I have loved doing 2 24hr fasts per week along with 12-18hrs per day. But I am super flexible with food and focus on super low meal frequency. As to which fats - butter and coconut oil are my top two but beef fat or pork fat in fatty cuts of meat are also a favorite of mine. Pho with tons of sprouts and veggies and no noodles is a go to for me. I get into keto so easily now days I use fasting more but will also often eat mostly keto between fasts as well. If I wanna bulk a little I may eat some more carbs or higher protein. I would finally mention high salt as being another key to my diet plan for maximizing insulin sensitivity.

@mcswipe16
@mcswipe16 6 лет назад
the thing I've found out about fats is that unless they are mixed with Carbs, there isn't a ton of variation in food, but there is variation in "breed". TAke cheese for example. there are thousands of types of cheese, it's almost like wine! Then there are seeds and nuts, your eggs, your fatty meats, avocados (my personal favorite) various oils like coconut oil and MCT oil. There are a few more but those are your basics. If you move away from those though you tend to start moving into proccesed foods, which arent awful but not reccomended for an over all healthy life style (which i'm sure you are aware of).
@jamesmichealemeryblack6818
@jamesmichealemeryblack6818 6 лет назад
Jesse Prososki Very good information and points. Thank you. I use the MCTs and am a huge egg person, have been for 20 plus years. I’m just trying to integrate sone variation as well. I have 3 Avocados that have been sitting in my Fridge for 3 weeks... I’m just working at working them into my diet... lol I’m not very adventurous when it comes to preparing foods. I look at them as fuel, and pretty much eat the sane things over and over. It’s always worked wonders for me, but with age and changes in my body, i have to make changes as well... I know this. Thanks for the insight.

Back in College, i used to Gym whilst on the fast. I found morning times were the most helpful. I would say to do your weight training either first thing in the morning OR after your meals, however, you'll never be as strong if you're burning more calories than what you're putting in.

Been fasting for a month already, and i feel waaay better. Not interested in losing weight, only the feel good aspect of it. Now i'm interested in going keto but i'm not yet 100% sure about that idea cause i have ulcerous colitis AND genetic polycystic kidney disease. The second one is that worries me. I will leave this comment here if anyone with similar diagnosis comes along, i would GREATLY appreciate your insight on keto diet with this diagnosis. P.S. don't try to give me lessons about visiting my doctor. I'm done with those people. Sick of all the crap medicine they want me to use, and they stopped being effective anyway. I'm in charge now. Thank you for your time reading this. Cheers!

Video Idea: what a full day of eating would look like on a keto fasting diet. (this would be really helpful as I struggle to find the correct foods and amounts)

You can still eat enough calories in the time you have to eat when you do IF though. You can do IF every day and not be deficient in your macro nutrients and phytonutrients.
@DodjiSeketeli
@DodjiSeketeli 6 лет назад
mtl47, yeah exactly. I am not sure why Thomas keeps saying that you should not fast every day. I have been eating one meal a day in the evening, every single day, for a while now, while practising martial arts at least twice or three times per week, in the evenings before dinner. When I don't have karate classes, I lift weight or I jump some serious rope. All my training is done fasted, of course. I feel great, my strength and endurance has never been so good. I regularly test my blood ketones (beta hydroxy-butirate) and I tend to be in ketosis since around 9 am for the rest of the day, even the days following a starchy meal. I eat only whole food, though. All my labs (blood tests) are great. Granted, I pay a lot of attention to eating lots of colourful veggies everyday, nuts, but also animal proteins sources like cheese (I live in France), eggs, meat from time to time etc. Again, I feel great, am not hungry throughout the day, am more focused in my work (I am a software engineer) and my willpower increased like hell. Heck, I just don't want to let go of all these gains. I'll let you guys know the day I start having deficiencies etc, real science/experiment style. But so far, fasting everyday has been great. Of course I am not as big as Thomas 😂. But that is not my goal in life. I enjoy beeing under 10% of body fat, weigh 67,5kg for 173cm, having 6 pack abs, 47bpm of resting heart rate and I am 41 years old. Really, from where I sit, fasting everyday works just great.

mtl47 depends on the person. My maintenance calories are around 2300; I personally find it extremely difficult t eat OMAD and get in all my calories, but doable with 2MAD.
@mtl47

CandCfam that's what I mean. You have to make it work for you as an individual but like I said you can still get the calories needed while you're doing IF everyday.

Discuss the ketosis trigger point and best methods to layer IF with Ketosis. I find that it’s highly effective to do cardio within the first 24 hrs of fasting to trigger a deep ketosis from there it’s easy to maintain ketone levels. Without the cardio I find the body doesn’t fully accept ketosis mode and sits in low energy glucose mode that makes you feel terrible. It’s so subtle but is seriously effective, it’s as though the body has resistance to switch to full ketosis at about 0.3mmol so better to blast through than waste time and energy on the edge.

Hi Thomas, I will like a video that puts everything together. ACV, ketosis, IF and exercise. I fast and do ketosis but I feel that when I take ACV I am more hungry and don't do more than 16 hrs fast.

Add alittle Himalayan salt to your water ... I had the same issue ... ACV cranks up the hunger way faster ... but also I started adding cinnamon and go get powder to ACV and noticed that also helped

Xbitrate I was IF’ing before keto, and it wasn’t actually much different. Like keto, once you overcome the initial discomfort of no food/carbs, you’re body adapts and it gets so much easier. Maybe watch fledge fitness because he’s an IF channel, but he still includes carbs.

I've had a theory i've been wanting to try. When you fast or go into ketosis for a certain period of time, instead of your body becoming insulin resistant, it becomes insulin sensitive, which means your body produces less insulin when you eat. So my theory is that when you are fasting intermittently or in ketosis for an extended period of time, you could get away with a little extra carbs for a while because your body doesn't need as much insulin as it did before. My biggest piece of evidence for this is from my own personal experience. Over the last summer I was in a ketosis for about 3 months. Then one week, we had the annual summer fair. So I and my friends all got together to party and chill and relax. Suffice to say i wasn't in ketosis anymore. My diet included things like fast food, pizza, ice cream, elephant ear, deep fried Oreos for like a week. My exercise stayed the same, my diet was the only thing that changed. When I weighed myself at the end of the week... nothing, no change in weight and I didn't see a change in the mirror!! I'm not saying to binge on carbs or anything, i'm just saying I think your body learns how to properly deal with those extra sugars and carbs.
@soldierside365
@soldierside365 6 лет назад
Jesse Prososki interesting theory.. I suppose your calories, despite being from ‘bad’ foods, must have intuitively remained similar, on top of your fasting and exercise, therefore no weight gain? Plus, sounds like a really fun week so the stress response of fat storage etc. Wasn’t even there. I had the same kinda thing last year, for a couple months my diet was pizza, ice cream, peanut butter, protein powder, and vodka (was a rough time haha) and I still lost weight and I think it was because alcohol apparently puts you in deeper ketosis, hence why the day after I drink I barely want to eat..

I don't know why anyone would want to bring their carbs past 70g unless they are an elite athlete. Even if you want to get out of keto, you should still only consume like 30-70g. You really don't need any more, and your blood tests will be much better than going past 70g. Basically, just eat more plants than you normally would if you want to go out of keto - like basically into primal/paleo.

3.55 kgs in 16 days, IF was 2-3 days for the first week, now every day for at least 16 hrs. So far no problems, but monitoring it closely. Had a flu feeling today with diarrhea, lethargy and feeling a tiny bit sick, but not really nauseous. But ok tonight :) Lol, think I ate too much though, tonight (2 meals spread 6 hrs apart). @zakialeks
@zakialeks 6 лет назад
highflyer131 not an expert or anything, but you could start changing your macros to the point where you are eating a lot more fat (85%) than protein(10)and carbs(5). Im currently at 10% body fat without calorie restriction and i did it this way. Just try to take 1g of protein per kg of *lean* mass and fill the rest with fats. I wish you luck with overcoming it

Yea definitely don’t lower your calories too much, that’ll change your metabolism in a relatively short amount of time. If you’re not either weight training or getting in cardio 4-5 days a week, start there before you change up your Keto diet, unless you up fats and drop carbs a little more. Good luck

Eat more veggies :). A lot more. Basically, what you are describing sounds like mineral deficiency (sodim, potassium, magnesium) etc. Usually hardstyle ketogenic diet proponents don't eat enough leafy greens and veggies in general because they consider them as carbs. Try eating veggies of different colours (the most important one beeing green) raw and cooked in an unlimited amount. Don't count them as carbs. The probability that greens spike your insuline in a significant way is close to zero. And then, when you are not eating, try to drink water with lemon juice, salt and apple cider vinager from time to time. And see how you feel. That should help you replenish your minerals tank.
