I mean, everyone is different man. I'm 6ft about 215, and after 3 months of lifting I able to do about 210 for 5 and after that my grip really starts to fatigue (I do a pyramid warm up before). Don't feel much activation in my back. Although, I did spend probably the past month or two working on back, legs, chest, etc and I held off doing dead lifts because I just felt like I wasn't there yet. I also did take nearly a month off while waiting for equipment. Same thing goes for bench, squat, etc. I'm lucky that after a few months my bench is around 160 for 5, and that's 10lbs up from the previous week. For some people my numbers are nothing, and maybe that's where they started, but for some people it's something they can't do yet even after a year of training. Best thing is though, Dr. Mike has the information you need. Absorb it, and go get that weight 💪!

Get yourself some cobra grips. No need to make your dead lifts suffer from weaker forearms. There will be elitists who say that wraps are detrimental, but if your forearms are holding you back, you should get wraps. It lets me focus on my form when pulling heavier weights, and doesn't rip my palms apart from the bar rolling in my hands.@@Osprey1994

Kettlebell swings are incredible for conditioning. Dr. Mike's point is that Mark isn't going to induce any hypertrophy or strength gains by deadlifting such a small amount. If you like kettlebell swings for conditioning, that's awesome, I do too, but I'm certainly not operating under the misconception that the swings are going to hypertrophy my muscles, which is why I also lift weights.

How is he going to progress from that warm-up to the actual deadlift weight, unless he’s got some truly stupid kettlebells hidden somewhere? And even then, wouldn’t it make more sense to just use a bar with the same weight and the ability to adjust? Even giving him the benefit of the doubt requires some illogical jumps. In all fairness, Walberg is a 52 year old actor. My guess is his goal is not to be deadlifting 225 on a regular basis. He's also likely on some sort of TRT protocol. For all we know, maybe he found that when he deadlifts heavy he starts to get really bulky/experiences pain. He could very well have traded heavy deadlifts for kettlebell deadlifts because: a.) kettlebell deadlift is still a functional movement. b.) kettlebell deadlift allows him to be pain-free. c.) kettlebell deadlift still causes sufficient stimulus to maintain a certain physique. d.) all of the above. When you're deep into the fitness/lifting community, sometimes you have to step back and realize that not everyone has the goal of becoming the most in-shape person. Maybe for Mark, this is just a favorite way of doing a deadlift, it achieves the result he wants, and he doesn't feel the need to go after a 225 deadlift. Sure, he could lift more, and in a more effective way, but why? - he's an actor, not a lifter.
@himeshsinghshishodiya
@himeshsinghshishodiya 11 месяцев назад
Starts to get really bulky? Yeah sure lol. If you're an actor building a physique for a role, you'll have to become a lifter and that weight is surely pretty low for him doing almost nothing as he's a healthy, adult male.

Why xd so he gets weaker quicker from age and hurts his back? Its not dangerous to lift over 225lbs
@vinvin4884
@vinvin4884 11 месяцев назад
@@Cin9999 Deadlift has the highest risk to reward ratio of practically every single lift. Hell, there are world famous strongmen and bodybuilders who avoid the exercise for that reason alone. It may not be dangerous for YOU to deadlift 225lbs, but you have no idea what kind of injuries he is dealing with or has accumulated over his life. Also, you get weaker as you age and become more injury prone. That's just a fact. You can prevent that to an extent through strength training, but at 52 yrs old, the majority of people are not going to be able to meet strength targets they hit in their 20's. That's just life.
@vinvin4884
@vinvin4884 11 месяцев назад
@@himeshsinghshishodiya Even amongst action stars, not every actor is interested in getting a bodybuilder physique or becoming a "lifter." At 52, Marky Mark is getting up there. There are plenty of older action stars that simply maintain a lean and fit looking body and aren't interested in gaining significant size/strength. Performing a 225 lb deadlift probably isn't necessary for him. Could he do it? Yah, he probably could. But you have no idea what injuries he has accumulated over his life. For all we know, he's had lower back issues and the risk to reward ratio just isn't worth it to him. You also have no idea what deadlifts do to his physique. Different exercises also effect people differently. When I perform heavy squats or deadlifts, my lower body gets really bulky, really fast. Personally, I like that. Maybe he doesn't? At his age, and with his career as an actor, his goal is probably to stay in shape and look good in front of a camera. And he doesn't need to squat 225 lbs to accomplish that. Maybe he squatted that much when he filmed Pain & Gain, but that was for a specific role almost 10 years ago.

I submit he is going for a lean athletic body. Not everyone is into the classic bodybuilding or strength training trying to stack on as much muscle as possible, I started body building around 42 years ago, I then moved into power lifting in my thirties, by the time I got to around 50 my joints and connecting tissue were FUBAR. For the last 9 years all I have been doing is Bells, bodyweight and mobility. Whilst I will never be as strong or as big as I was years ago, my body is a much happier thing due to the interval style of training I do using smart complexes and long grinds Now, being 59 years old and having a lean athletic body that focuses on my future self is more important at my stage in life than hitting a weight PR At my age, most of the older guys are struggling with long term injuries from years of heavy lifts, most stopped lifting all together years ago because of this, some have dumped the big lifts and transitioned into more of a longevity and fitness style of training, and are better for it Kettlebells are excellent tools for this style of fitness training I dig your focus is bodybuilding, but that isn't the only horse in the race for peoples goals in relation to fitness and strength training Horses for courses

In a hierarchy, the barbell is king. I have never seen a 500 lb dumbbell or kettlebell. Kettlebells are king when it comes to movement. They go hand in hand. If you use kettlebells for a warmup, then move into heavy weight training. Or if you don't have a gym, a kettlebell will still give you power, and the profile is small enough to put in a corner, so it's not in the way.
@LvlUp.
@LvlUp. 10 месяцев назад
The perspective is now only a maximum increase in muscle mass? One-legged deadlifts, e.g. with the kettlebell, train the balance and one-sided stabilization of the torso and much more. With 2x 32 kg, i.e. a kettlebell in each hand, that would be 64 kg per leg for a unilateral deadlift. You're constantly preaching more control and deeper stretch with less weight. Or was I wrong in the channel? Is or should the only goal in the studio be to grow to the maximum?! Everyone has to decide that for themselves. For me, however, a mixture of both worlds makes sense, because please look at the mobility of said mass of people. You are always as old as you are mobile and flexible. Mass isn't always great. I still love your channel.

Kettle bell deadlift is alright if you’re training core specifically and doing one handed suitcase carry’s or farmers carry’s

Your gripe doesn't make much sense. If the exercise is harder than another exercise with the same or greater weight then clearly you are engaging different muscle groups or a different combination of muscle groups and therefore there's a benefit because the the higher weight alternatives are clearly missing something. But again the way you've presented your gripe is difficult to understand. So perhaps I'm misunderstanding you.

Exhausting doesn't mean effective, though. There can be a correlation, but there's definitely not a causation.

Which is great, for conditioning. But at that point, so is riding a bike, running, or any other form of cardio. The point is that you're basically doing cardio, rather than a hypertrophy inducing movement. I do kettlebell swings all the time, but I'm not under the impression they're going to hypertrophy my muscles to any meaningful extent over a given period, which is why I also lift weights.

I wish Dr. Mike put it in some context even though it's a 'short'. Everything is depends on your goals and available equipment. So if you have access to barbell with enough weights and have enough health to work with it -- using much lighter and less comfortable to handle with 2 hands kettlebell is a bad choice. But if you don't have access or you can't deadlift with big weights (like me due to chronic bad back) or you general goal is to just maintain some general physic -- kettlebells are very good. Don't forget that Dr. Mike is a huge guy and pro-builder while you're (most likely) not :D
@uncreativepanda
@uncreativepanda 11 месяцев назад
Well yea he's talking about Mark Wahlberg, that is clearly not an issue for him. Obviously if you don't have weights or a gym membership you can't lift that much because you simply don't have access to them, and it goes without saying if you have chronic back issues you'll also have to lift lighter. Pro bodybuilder or not most men should not be lifting that light if they've been working out for very long.

Yeah ok, not for everyone. But in GENERAL, for 99% of healthy males this is not strength traning, just shitty cardio. Maintaining when you are not fit is litterally doing nothing, like you always did. Light kettlebell deadlifts are just a waste of time and regular day to day activity level.

From my experience kettlebells make great cardio. I’d much rather do it than a lot of other cardio. But like Mike says if it effects the 10,000 steps a day it’s pretty useless. All in all kettlebells are great for general fitness especially for older folks. But if you want to build muscle there are way more efficient ways to do it. Just my experience.

The only time i use kettle bells is for lunges, you're just wasting time if you substitute a barbell for a kettle bell for movements where you can train heavy.
@colinwiseman

I was like 70kg... that's decently heavy for me. But I always forget I never add the weight of the bar into my deadlift notes. So I DL 90kg all the time, probably 100+ when I feel good :D I should add the bar weight to my notes.
