Great man Leonard Cohen. Kevin Barry was tortured. The British soldiers pulled out his fingers nails and toe nails. They done the same to his comrade .They were only 18 and 20. May they Rest in Peace and Leonard also.🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏🇮🇪
@@williamlane7160 I recall something like what you write - but it seems it was more meditation stuff. NPR: Well, I never became a Buddhist, to tell you the truth.
My Dad used to sing this song with a few drops under his belt. He had a wonderful tone singing this song, a little maudlin of course as the words inspired such. Thank you for sharing a fond memory of mine.
This song must’ve been wrote later than 1916 as Kevin Barry died on 1st November 1920 in mountjoy gaol so must’ve been after that date although he did witness the uprising of 1916 he wasn’t an active member until a year later.🇮🇪🏴🇮🇪💚TAL
The ballad was penned shortly after his death by an author whose identity is unknown.Barry's family investigated this in the 1920s, but were only told it was the work of an Irish emigrant living in Glasgow. Some sources claim that it was written by Terrence Ward, a journalist, but this is incorrect: he actually wrote another song about Barry.(At the very least it seems that nobody is actively claiming copyright of this song.) It is sung to the melody of "Rolling Home to Dear Old Ireland" (also known as "Rolling Home to" several other places).
When 17 year old Lepa Radic Yougoslavian freedom fighter under threat of death by the Nazis was asked to reveal her comrades, she replied, 'you will know them when they come to avenge me'. Herself and Kevin where made of the same stuff. RIP to all out brave myrtars who fought Fascism and Imperialism across the globe.
@@highiqgenius9910 Read the proclamation. Read Connolly and Larkin. This Island is great because of looking outward not inward. Name me one great Irish woman or man that believed in an insular ethno state. Totally sick of right wing openly racist dumb as the hole in a cows arse 'patriots'.
@@highiqgenius9910If you had read the previous post & understood it properly it also mentioned, apart from Kevin Barry a young Yugoslavian resistance fighter aged 17 called Lepa Radic who defied the Nazis & was also executed in the same way that Kevin Barry defied the British & compares both of them as one who fought fascism, & one who fought imperialism. Imperialism is defined as: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means. Kevin Barry as you know, was involved in the struggle against British imperialism in Ireland. There was absolutely no implication by the OP of this thread that Kevin Barry fought against fascism. High IQ genius indeed!
Even more accurate yet would be to say “the Black and Tan war”, as “the war of independence” was subverted by one side joining forces with the British. Independence was not gained by the free state, the republic betrayed.
