I swear this guy is the definition of humble. And back then he was 36. I’m 42 now and he was light years ahead of his age in terms of emotional and intellectual maturity. Watching Dances again now for the first time since when it first came out. It's still directed, shot, acted, scored, edited and designed better than most films coming out now, in 2021. I'll check back on this comment in 10 years from now, and will probably still agree. Peace to the natives. Peace to the animals. Peace to humanity.
watching this movie I get very sad for the genocide committed by the American government and as this government still commits murders in other countries, genocide is at the root of this country
This is his triumph! He got ridiculed, mocked, scorned for directing it. People were sure it would flop. He proved them all wrong by making a beautiful magnificent masterpiece. What a legend!
I have ADHD I can't pay attention or remain interested in a movie for more than 30 minutes. However, I can watch Dances With Wolves for the entire 3 hour plus duration and be completely engrossed in every minute of it.
@@chosenpeople3868 I stated I liked a particular movie that actually keeps my attention....not "oh please feel sorry for me that I have a disorder thousands of other people have". If you think I'm seeking attention, you should look at yourself.....you picked "Chosen People" as your name. Clearly you feel like your special. I apologize for making you less righteous by stating I can sit through and enjoy a long movie. Shame on me.
Witness the passionate reaction at 1:30 from Graeme Green, a member of the Oneida (Canadian First People) who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor as "Kicking Bird"
This guy DESERVED it. DWW is a classic and this was his directorial debut. Hats off to the entire cast and crew, specially the writer. Costner should have received a standing ovation
I'm really glad Kevin Costner won. Dances With Wolves is one of the best movies I've ever seen and it deserved all the praise it got. Everything about it was simply awesome, nothing was better then Dances With Wolves. Nothing at all.
@@ompaloompa65 Ah my mistake, I didn't realize you're a child. Yes Dances is a great film, aged very well, totally better than Goodfellas, Awakenings, Misery & Total Recall which came out the same year. Everyone loves Dances and totally thinks it deserved 20 oscars and Costner isn't a self absorbed boob. Now go out and play silly.
I remember when I was a kid I saw Dances with Wolves some time in the winter. It's amazing that when I watch the movie now I travel back in time to those cozy times.
Kind of odd that the two most oft-mentioned Scorsese Oscar losses were to actors in their first attempts as directors (Robert Redford and Kevin Costner)
@Commander Keen He most certainly did more than gangsters! "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull", "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", "The Aviator", "The Last Temptation of Christ", and more!
Brandy Y. I admit, it was a really good movie, Costner did a great job for his debut, but this was easily Scorcese’s best work to date, and he should’ve won for this
It really was well deserved. It's easy to dismiss Dances With Wolves as a "blockbuster", afterwards, with the benefit of hindsight. People have forgotten that Costner had carried that film almost by himself, producing it, directing it, taking the lead role in it... He did it even though everybody was laughing at him, calling it "KevinGate" and such when it began to run into difficulties (and over budget, I believe). It's easy to forget, with the huge success it turned out to be, that initially, no one believed in Dances With Wolves being a blockbuster. The film was also extremely difficult to make and Costner was mocked throughout the whole process by the media. The idea that American viewers would go and watch a 3-hour movie with a huge part of the dialogue spoken in Lakota with subtitles... That was actually a long shot. So, in short, Costner totally deserved to win this Oscar because directing Dances With Wolves really was an outstanding achievement.
Such a well deserved honor for a very moving and beautiful film and its' very talented actor and director. Kevin Costner did such an amazing job on this epic film.
Very very underrated...... dances with wolves/bodyguard/ field of dreams/ untouchables/ great great films granted there’s some not so great ones but the ones that were great were huge!
If you make you daughter win a Razzie FOR worst supporting actress...then you don't deserve an oscar nominatión FOR directing. Barry Levinson FOR Ávalon, Giuseppe tornatore FOR cinema paradiso, Jerry Zucker FOR Ghost...those would have been better nominees than Coppola ! And yes...I love Dance with Wolves,it's gorgeously epic.
Cinema Paradiso had been eligible the year before and won the Best Foreign Language Film in 1990. However, I'll side with you on a Barry Levinson nomination for Avalon. Avalon is a great film.
I think the OP meant that Goodfellas, like cult movies, have a highly devoted following. Goodfellas was a mainstream big studio release unlike most cult movies so the similarities end at both having a particularly fervent fanbase.
This movie was fucking torture to get made, so I give credit to Costner for neither having a mental breakdown nor quitting the project. However, Scorsese is a godsend of film making and I adore Goodfellas, so I agree that he should've won.
The most incredible thing is Tom Cruise being recognize by Billy Cristal as one of the last movie stars...in 1991. We are in 2024 and he is the very very last movie star. 03/03/24
@Nikhil Sharma - exactly Nikhil. I love love love Goodfellas, and a huge fan of Scorsese. In fact Goodfellas is in my top 20 favorite movies of all time, but as you said, if you’ve seen Dances..... then you know Scorsese was not robbed, just bad timing of releasing his movie in the same eligibility year as Dances. Dances is on epic masterpiece level. And it gives the viewer perspective. Sorta like Titanic, or any WW II movie, or any Holocaust movie. You all who are saying Scorsese was robbed, just sit down one evening and watch Dances, then come back to this comment thread.
He was only 36 when he won this! Plus, Costner didn’t become interested in acting and filmmaking until he was in his last year of college when he had a chance encounter with Richard Burton, who encouraged him to pursue acting.
"Goodfellas" is a masterpiece. Impossible to deny. But I still can't understand why a such wonderfully directed (and acted) movie like "Dances With Wolves" should have robbed something that year. It's really a great, great, great movie. Moreover, I miss the "end of '80s - beginning of '90s" Kevin. He's not one of my favourite actors but he really did some of the best movies of that period. "Bull Durham", "The Untouchables", "Field of Dreams", "JFK", "A Perfect World".
@HardikG121 I agree, Goodfellas is just another gangster movie to me, not too good, not too bad. Gangster movies have been coming out since the 30s and when you’ve seen enough of them they all just feel the same. Goodfellas really didn’t do anything unique. Maybe it did what it did better than other gangster films but nothing really new.
@@NotHarpoGroucho Goodfellas is regarded as the second best gangster movie after The Godfather.Everyone loves it even now whereas Dances with Wolves has left somewhere in the 90s.

I love this man, I have watched every single movie he has made, many over and over again. I have cried watching Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves and The Body Guard and now I am going to buy the book Holy Road, the sequel to Dances with Wolves. I have tried to find the new mini series they made called Holy Road, starring another actor, which carries on from Dances with Wolves, it is advertised but there is no one streaming it.,
Just a down right shame Scorcese didn’t get best director. It’s one thing not to give best picture for “Goodfellas” - it’s another to deny Scorcese best director. I think in time, those that voted have realized what a mistake they made
Goodfellas was one hell of a movie! But for its sheer scope, size, re-creation of the Old West and Native American language how could you say Costner didn't deserve it?
It's a bit sad to see how his career took a massive nose dive after a brief but massive period of success and he certainly doesn't seem to make any resurgence but I'm kinda glad he won coz Dances with Wolves was a big directorial achievement especially for a debutante who happens to be an actor.
He was one of the biggest movie stars from late 80s to 2000s, I wouldn’t call having a 20 years leading man career as short. And now he’s having a massive success again with his hit tv show “Yellowstone”.
Deborah Edelen talk about robbed, she was robbed of her Supporting Actress Oscar. I love Whoopi, and I love Ghost, but her portrayal of Oda Mae Brown, while funny, was not an Oscar caliber performance. I think they gave it to her to make up for not giving it to her for The Color Purple (and she should have won for that performance). Mary deserved to win for Stands With A Fist, and it breaks my heart that she didn’t.
Charles Heiston I enjoyed silence I read the book a few years back. But you're really coming off as a fanboy if you think dances with wolves is lack luster. Had much more unknown actors was harder to make the score is brilliant , it looks beautiful and it has a powerful story . The directors cut is 3 and half hours long and it never gets boring . I love goodfellas and dances with wolves. Both films deserved the award and more preferred dances with wolves. Both got similar reviews and both were box offices success and have the same reactions from audiences as classic films
..both movies are so great.. but the late 80's and early 90's movies that were awarded had the best sun sets and cinematography.. forrest gump, braveheart, dances with wolves, titanic..
Wolf of wall-steet is one hour of perfect and one of complete trash. Hell, evenh when he won with the departed he didn't deserve it against philosophically important movies like letters from Iwo Jima.
A fate that would be repeated 2 years later when Clint Eastwood took home directing Oscar for Unforgiven but was also nominated for his leading role in that movie
Highway robbery, Scorsese's direction in Goodfellas remains unparalleled. It is such an astonishing piece of art, and it's denial of a win that night is forever a stain on the Academy.
Haha, I remember this like it was yesterday. How anyone can still think it "stole' all the Oscars from Goodfellas is beyond me. This is an uplifting, sprawling, sweeping, epic film, full of cinematography and directing Martin Scorsese only wishes he was responsible for. Goodfellas is a great movie, but this is on a whole other plane of existence. Sure, I love my films full of F-bombs, wiseguys and gratuitous violence, but there is no meaning, no message, you walk out of the theater feeling like you need a shower......you feel uplifted and just overall better at the end of this film. The movie has a message, an historical one.....and my god John Barry's Oscar winning score!
Rewatched it yesterday. Sprawling. Beautiful. Humanistic epic! Kevin deserved all the Oscars. When I was younger I preferred Goodfellas but as a 28 yr old I now prefer Dances with Wolves!
I completely disagree when you say Goodfellas has no meaning or message. It's an accurate depiction of three decades worth a life as a gangster in the criminal underbelly of Brooklyn. It entails everyday problems they face while also bringing some humility to gangsters. The acting is impeccable the writing is phenomenal the direction is better than anything I've ever seen. I love Dances with Wolves with all my heart and I'm glad Kevin Costner got his Oscar but I believe Goodfellas is just on a whole nother level of filmmaking.
