Barbra Streisand presenting the Best Picture Oscar® for "Dances With Wolves" to Producers Kevin Costner and Jim Wilson - the 63rd Annual Academy Awards® in 1991.
'Thirteen years later, their homes destroyed, their buffalo gone, the last band of free Sioux submitted to white authority at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. The great horse culture of the plains was gone and the American frontier was soon to pass into history.' Gets me every time when that comes up at the end of this truly magnificent film. Thank you Kevin Costner thank you.
Growing up in Ireland I had a visit to my now departed Dad from the foster home I was living in and at the age of 14yr he took me to see this. My Dad struggled with mental illness but he did his very best to show love and support for his kids. This film holds a very special place in my life as it was the only time we done this.
In terms of pure beauty, of the essence of the message of the living, there is nothing above Dances with wolves, which is a pure jewelry, a film that stops time.
A lot of things have been said about Dances with Wolves since 1990, some negative, and many positive, but in my personal experience the best thing I can say about this 1990 classic is that you'll become a better person after watching it.
"You'll become a better person after watching it." Gosh, love this high praise. Never thought of this movie this way. But now you have mentioned it, it rings true.
Plains native living in Pennsylvania when this movie was in theaters and went every weekend to see the wide open spaces and the sky. Really missed the western sky.
Dances with wolves is one of the best movies ever made...absolutely brilliant..I went through every emotion watching this movie..I left the cinema knowing that this movie has made history..well done Kevin Costner !!!!
There was a remake of Dances with Wolves which did much, much better at the Box Office. Actually, it was a Plagerized a Film that didn't officially credit the Movie- it was essentially a remake. That Movie was called Avatar which is basically a Science Fiction Version of Dances with Wolves.
When Dances with Wolves was released, I was 11 yo. It was since then I have started being madly interested in the history of the Native Americans. Even though I live in Europe. And I kept the admiration and fascination for their magnificent culture until today.
My team and I created the HD digital master and the 4 hour version. We digitally cleaned every single frame of the film by hand. I can't remember how many months were spent and how many hours spent with Mr. Costner in the viewing room. Even after all those man-hours I still don't ever tire of the film. It is truly a masterpiece.
Actually just watched it and openly remarked about how beautiful the color correction and sharpness was. Your team did a marvelous job remastering Dances with Wolves and the work did not go unnoticed.
Funny, but few people ever comment like you did. I suppose if a viewer doesn’t notice anything about the picture quality, then that means we did our jobs properly
I don't understand why so many people blame Dance with wolves for winning over goodfellas. I love both movies and both are great. But just one of the movies is about good people who where loosing their homes and their lives. where missunderstood and slaughtered... Dance with wolves gives them a face and a voice. The messange of the movie to care about nature and each other is absolutely beautiful. This makes Dance with wolves to my absolute favorite movie and much more valuable than goodfellas!
Dances With Wolves is one-note, poorly paced, not visually interesting, has no intriguing character dynamics and fits the “white savior” trope to the T. There’s a reason that hardly anyone under 50 thinks it’s an especially good movie. Even if Goodfellas wasn’t one of the greatest American movies ever, Dances With Wolves would still not be a good BP winner.
@@liteflightify you were clearly not able to "read inbetween the lines" of the movie. It's about how white people destroy the american land and the native american culture. It's about a white guy who learns to worship the beauty of nature, animals and humans (indians). It's not the white man who saves the indians, the indians who save john dunbar. The movie was made in a time when the native american culture was not acceptable in the US. It gave the Indians a platform to show themselve as intelligent and decent human beings. they where given the oppertunity to talk in one of their own languages. the movie shows us what we destroy and loose in the world if we go trough it as ignorant selfish people who are not able to see more than our selfe. don't just follow a story. try to see behind the curtain. see it in conterxt of time and its economic, curltural, religious, political and social influence. see it's ethic message!
@@markanderson7364 disagree, both films are on the same level and are great in different aspects. Personally, after watching both movies three times, I've gotta say that I prefer Dances with wolves over Goodfellas.
"While it's not as important as the rest of the world's situation where it sits, it will always be important to us and we thank you for this." No, Kevin - we thank YOU! This is one of the most important movies I ever watched, thank you for making it.
"My Native American brothers and sisters across the country". Wow thats so kewl. One of my favorite natives American movies. Greeting from the Navajo Nation. #rezboywelder
Certainly one of the most deserving Oscars in movie history. One of the best movies ever. One of the best Westerns ever. One of the best soundtracks ever. One of the most deserving themes. If one can't appreciate that, then one really has no business here.
Ray Cologne 'Dances with Wolves', on the other hand, speaks to everyone in any time, while 'Goodfellas', although very good, is about nasty people doing nasty things without a shred of remorse or even of recognition of their inhumanity - and for that reason it should be held aloft?
Ray Cologne Did GoodFellas leave you with some thoughts after you left the theatre? I was spell bound, when I saw it for the first times in the theatre, it left me with deep thoughts.
Dances With Wolves absolutely deserved this award. This film makes is a masterpiece of story telling, and it is a film that people will share with those they love many, many years from now. I can understand if another film happened to connect with you, and connect stronger, for some, the year that this film won. But I have no understanding of the comments here that suggest that this film was anything less than fully deserving of the award it received. This film is great! Way to go Costner!
This movie opened the way to a lot of native great other movies, but still the best even after 30 years, it didn't aged at all! A great man and a great movie. The making of is really emotional too.
Dances With Wolves stands out over Goodfellas because it was the first time that a mostly all 1st Nation Indigenous Cast was in the entire movie! If you know the ugly history of racism in this country, in the past Hollywood hardly ever gave parts to 1st Nation/Natives, instead the part would be played by a white cast, and/or they would make the Natives out as being the villains, which was an insult to these people whose land was stolen, and culture, and people were senselessly slaughtered. Kevin Costner showed more of a truthful version of these great people, and used much of the Indigenous languages, and tribal dialects, which was awesome.
@@darkknight3769 Exactly, I 200% agree :) I know very well Natives history (past and now). I'm french, but I have read a lot and watch a lot of documentary and real natives movies too (almost all, more than 30 made by and with "Natives", not old movies with false indians). I'm a hudge "fan" of them, I know a lot about american injustice about treaties, stolen lands, pipeline project, ... I respect the reals americans: Natives :)
@@baswordfish That's awesome! My Grandfather, and Mom were Seminole, and very proud people. My siblings and I were told many stories, and my family had some evil people try to take my Grandfather's land in the state they lived in, but we thank God we were able to defend it legally, documents, and all.
@@darkknight3769 Kevin Costner has a little bit of cherokee blood (his grand father was half cherokee from what I've read). I saw the docu serie (8 episodes) "500 nations" with him, a good one!
@@darkknight3769 Good that you were able to won :) Usually it's not fair, even in the rez. Some "white" are "renting" land, and there is not a lot left to Natives, so unfair. Tho worst is the government I guess. They "legally" rob everything. Like for Dann sisters! Carrie and Mary Dann. So so unfair. US government would never recognize the genocide they did, the bigest on hearth! A native is less than black people for them, and a black (afro-american) is already nothing for them... And after that, they are proud to be "american"... well... It's really unfair not to talk about that in school.
DANCES WITH WOLVES is a masterpiece and truly deserved to win, I don't care who says what. Years later, what are you going to do to change it? You cannot raise the Titanic, you cannot erase the Kennedy assassination, nor the Lincoln assassination, WWI or WWII...it's HISTORY. Please allow DANCES WITH WOLVES to enjoy its place in the Oscar history books. It's there and no big eraser will remove it. And to those who use such vulgar language, shame on you.
Only history that was made there was that, that was one of the biggest oscar snubs ever right next to citizen kane not being nominated and forrest gump winning over pulp fiction and shawshank redemption
We just watched the movie for the first time last night and are very happy that this great tribute has been shown to the Indians of whom we love. For the past few weeks we have been doing much research on the history of America and how it relates to the Indians and are shocked at what we are finding to be the REAL story. These tribal ppl are an incredible example to our depraved culture we live in today!!!!! We are so inspired by the movie and all the many things we have learned about these ppl.
i´m sorry, but this IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS to have ever won an Oscar.... this is one of the best films out there and I haven´t seen too many films to top this classic masterpiece...
Dances With Wolves is a magnificent movie and it absolutely deserved the Oscar! I can't watch this movie without crying and feeling all the emotions the characters in the movie felt and to me that's what makes a film a masterpiece!
Magnificent cast, magnificent story, absolutely magnificent music and magnificent memories. Thankyou to everybody involved in the production of this movie 👍
I watched more than 1000 films of Hollywood from 1940 to 2020,but i never forget this film after butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid....,its my all time favorite movie. Every scene in 4 hours of movie make u ' u r living in that era....
Wow!!! Stiff competition for Best Picture. Damn. Dances with Wolves was worthy of the win. It's a touching and beautiful portrayal of the Native American, unlike had ever been done before.
Yes very very good movie, had to watch it over 2 days because of the length. In my honest opinion the movie could and should have been cut down by at least 30 mins. For example the first hour or so was really drawn out. That is the reason why I give it 9/10 and not 10/10. I have only ever given 4 movies the perfect 10, so I am a very tough judger.
Wow, Dances won against some really awesome competition. I mean Godfather 3, though not all that great, and Goodfellas? Wow, excellent films. And Costner was great in Dances and the script was riveting, the cinematography was grand scale; a totally epic film and among my personal top 5 movies of all time.

Personally I find Dances with Wolves to be a beautiful and touching movie and Kevin Costner is just nervous and humbled by the honor of winning an Oscar.
GOODFELLAS is the film I watch more than DANCES WITH WOLVES and im pretty sure most people would tend to agree but DANCES WITH WOLVES S is just one of them truly breathtaking epics films that comes along and has something extra that blows your F**king mind. A well deserved win.
Dances with Wolves and Goodfellas are both classics, and both deserved to be nominated. Dances with Wolves most likely won because Costner created a very spiritual and epic atmosphere (the kind of atmosphere that's missing in Hollywood today in my opinion) But at the end of the day, all that matters is that Costner and Scorsese both created great films for movie lovers to enjoy.
The way we look at our fellowmen teaches us that it doesn't matter when everything is too difficult. This man did an extraordinary job that very few can dare, that is the teaching of this film...."you must always dare "
Dances With Wolves made me so touched in so many ways. If a movie can provoke anger, joy and sadness at the same time it's a success. I especially love that the movie i almsot 4 hours long. (I watched Director's Cut, don't know any other). Fantastisk movie!
I took my daughter to the Rosebud Reservation for the first time for a family reunion last month. It was great that she was able to meet relatives and see the traditions of our people. We watched Dances With Wolves last night, her first time. I hadn’t seen it in a year or so. It is such a masterpiece!
Kevin, thank you for making my favorite film-and that is alot as my Oldest daughter set her sights tobe a film editor-she graduated from columbia and got through luck has become a working editor. Film matters to our family this film touched me insuch an amazing way. So Thank you and also thank you for being such a basic good Man. As a divorced daughters, you are so there as the type of man they need 2 see-you never trash anyone...when I die if I open my eyes and see you, I'll say"YES I made the grade" . Thank you!
BRAVO KEVIN! GRATULATION! ich bin stolz darauf, diesen titel 30 jahre später im alter von 80 jahren auf der mundharmonika zu präsentieren: gehe zu >günter selbach, 8 videos.
Dances with Wolves is by far the best movie ever made. It has everything , drama, action, comedy romance. If you haven't seen it you should. It will make your spirit rise. And to all my Native American friends I have met through the years stay proud!
Goodfellas is probably my 2nd favorite film of all time. Scorsese is a GOD to me. But this movie means a lot to me and other native Americans, the first of its kind as well. Whereas many films like Goodfellas existed before it. Both great, you don't have to hate on one.
DJ Standing Elk I do not "hate" on Goodfellas...sure it was a very well done movie...but Dances with Wolves is an EPIC film, all respect to our Native brothers and sisters...it was EPIC...and may Michael Blake rest in eternal peace.
Ah, back when we had excellent written scripts and movies, the Oscars represented class, elegance and was truly a spectacular event, and we all liked each other a little bit more. Nowadays, at the Oscars, all we have is regurgitation, political posturing and lectures to the viewers, and mankind has a seething hatred between itself as we're headed 100mph down a dead end street to self destruction with no seat belts on.
