This, to me, is the much cleaner, harmonious, diverse, more interesting version. The duet also adds a brand new layer of life to the lyrics. I feel like Songs: Ohia walked so the Morbster could run
This is just a fantastic cover... it not only pays homage to the original (which is wonderful, obviously), but it has a beauty of it's own with the duet performance of Morby and Crutchfield. They're both terrific vocalists/musicians and they really outdid themselves on this cover. Love it.
@@TrashBettyBoop The original is by Songs: Ohia on the album "The Magnolia Electric Co." released in 2003 (not to be confused with the band becoming renamed Magnolia Electric Company.) The singer and artist behind the song is Jason Molina, who passed away in 2013 from complications related to alcoholism.
I was somehow recommended this cover during Covid lockdown, I had no awareness of Jason Andrew Molina unfortunately, but this cover brought me to Jason's work. What a genius he was. All hail the RU-vid algorithim.
I appreciate this cover but nobody can bring the magic Jason brought. It’s a palpable absence in every cover version of his music. I was in the other room when RU-vid auto suggested this tune and I heard Jason’ chords before his words. I will say that the lyrics stand out as exceptional when you hear the song by someone else. when listening to Jason sing it I’m so caught up in the way he emotes that the actual lyrics become secondary.
The whole place is dark Every light on this side of the town Suddenly it all went down Now we'll all be brothers of the fossil fire of the sun Now we will all be sisters of the fossil blood of the moon Someone must have set 'em up Now they'll be working in the cold grey rock Now they'll be working in the hot mill steam... Now they'll be working in the concrete In the sirens and the silences now All the great set up hearts All at once start to beat After tonight if you don't want this to be A secret out of the past I will resurrect it, I'll have a good go at it I'll streak his blood across my beak and dust my feathers with his ash I can feel his ghost breathing down my back I will try and know whatever I try I will be gone but not forever I will try and know whatever I try I will be gone but not forever Real truth about it is No one gets it right Real truth about it is We're all supposed to try There ain't no end to the sands I've been trying to cross The real truth about it is my kind of life's no better off It's got the maps or if it's lost We will try and know whatever we try We will be gone but not forever Come on let's try and know whatever we try We will be gone but not forever Real truth about it is there ain't no end to the desert I'll cross I've really known it all along Mama here comes midnight With the dead moon in its jaws Must be the big star about to fall Mama here comes midnight With the dead moon in its jaws Must be the big star about to fall Long dark blues Will-o'-the-wisp Long dark blues The big star is falling Long dark blues Will-o'-the-wisp The big star is falling Long dark blues Through the static and distance Long dark blues A farewell transmission Long dark blues Listen Long dark blues Listen Long dark blues Listen Long dark blues Listen
I love this cover. I like the original best, of course, but I still love the cover. It's great done as a duet. They also do a fine cover of Molina's "The Dark Don't Hide It."
I have this as an essential item on my Molina feed--I am only tonight understanding and appreciating how excellent it is--it has entered into the fullness of intentional realization--don't underestimate YT AI. I am old enough to know that time takes time.
This is insane! Farewell Transmission is one of my favorite songs of all time, and here’s Kevin Morby (and waxahatchee) with a pretty good cover of it. Not as epic as the original, but I think they got the spirit of the song right for the most part anyhow
I appreciate the sentiment and the effort. And this is not bad, not bad at all, But, well you know ... there appears to be some end to the sands they will cross.
Kevin Morby and Waxahatchee do a better cover of this than any of the haters on this comment thread will ever do. Be supportive or sit alone with your bitterness. I think it's great.
Tom Elliott it’s too soon every person profiting from his songs should know that Jason was depressed because he couldn’t pay his fucking bills . That’s the Midwest blues
I think your crush was probably just making a sweet gesture. The song is super cute and romantic and melancholy in my opinion! I think your crush has s crush on you back
@@bballduuuude6993 Thankyouuuuu for your answer I really did think that he was saying goodbye or something. I hope he does! I never told him. I hope he makes effort to ask me out or something.
@@bballduuuude6993 Thankyouuuuu but it was a long time ago :( I just don’t speak to him anymore. Anyway thankyouuuuu! I need to forget him. Because everything looks so stupid and our love is impossible. Its a long story. But we don’t have the same ethnicity and religion also not the same age. Soooo it’s just to much!
I really like a couple Kevin morby tracks and waxahatchee (don't now her name) has a super cute voice but nothing will ever come close to the original. I liked the girls verses a lot more than Kevin's.. his voice falls flat. Still, it's fun to sing along to.
Kicking back With doctor Ralph In his white lab coat And hair net All day I ve been Dancing on the line And Swimming in the pit Toking up on the loading dock smoke break Keep six this time So we don't get caught Bad look twice in a week Not my problem now It's a union beef Punch out Get dressed Spilling back into the streets Bums grinding everyone around For some change Big crowds tonight All sorts Cold icy wind With that low dead moon shining bright Don t tell me I forgot my light Can t go back Too far now Too late Gangsters on every corner getting closer to home Looking me up and down There Seeming real hungry tonight I just Gun em all off As I grip my box Just to feel safe They don t want no smoke with me tonight I m too big n wild They ll just wait for someone meek n mild See I didn t break or look away Saves me from getting jacked every way it's Just another day as a prisoner In this beautiful downtown Ghetto I live i love it all Gun shots at midnight Clubs let out then the gang fights Cops gonna bust your ass Only thing out tonight is police n fools Dark blue old school The Coppers and the foolss
@@aperez5360 hey Yeah it's mine It's like an alternate Lyric to the song Also a kinda thank you poem to the artist I ve done dozen s like this on RU-vid to say thanks to the artists Hope you can understand an thanks for your response
It's like comparing a shattered arm throwing it's last broken spear at the life monster and striking it in the eye before being turned to stone to a limp wristed slap at the ankle of the statue. The girl did ok though.
I love morby. He is profound. NOBODY should be covering this now. Give your money to his rehab charities. You all failed Jason Molina. He made literally zero dollars when he was done paying the band . All the other fabled drunks had a chance . His audience spent $0.05 on an mp3. You cunts
I spent a bit of time trying to find this cover to re-listen. Its a good try, but missed the mark. I think its because the whole thing is rushed. Even though in the original there are quick points you never feel like the singer is trying to get to the end of the song. Here I felt like I had a waiter at the end of their shift watching me eat.
