I haven't been a Kevin Smith fan for long. I first took notice when I looked up season one of Comic Book Men when I wanted to learn more about comics. I saw the store was Jay And Silent Bob's Secret Stash, and remembered hearing about them before. For about six months now I've bathed myself in everything Kevin Smith has made, except Jersey Girl. I haven't gotten to that yet. He is just an AWESOME dude. I'm gonna be a fan for life.
"You're bitter." Oh God! He just spoke from the heart and told you things that you can carry with you and remember so as not to do the same mistakes yourself. And he told you in the beginning that words can hurt. Things people say to you can hurt and you lay in bed at night thinking about what people have said to you or about you and you wonder if they're right or not. And you say to him "You're bitter." That's not nice, man. Didn't you listen. Maybe that's the only thing Kevin thought about that evening. About when you told him he was bitter. Couldn't you have said "Thank you for talking with us for a while. Appreciate it." Someone gave me similar advice ten years ago and I respected what he said to me. I didn't take his advice, I wish I had, but I still listened and respected the advice he gave me. sigh.. "You're bitter." Maybe one day you will understand.
curious thing is too, he's only gotten more 'animated' with age. You go back to like mid-2000s or anything earlier, while yeah he basically talked as much, but he was A LOT more soft spoken back then. Even in an environment where the entire point was hearing him, the first couple "A Night With" DVDs, his tone and pitch was quite a lot lower then. I was never sure if it was a transition he made by design or just a thing that happened. For the last dozen or so years he's got a lot more punch and force to his voice.
@@kevinw712 He's gotten more confident after some failure and realizing that it doesn't matter. He is also way more practised at these kinds of talks, as he has done them and podcasts for years.
The more I listen to Kev the more grateful I get over having been a dedicated fan for so long. Thanks so much for filming, uploading and letting me hear this extra stuff. I love you.
Kevin Smith is the kind of guy who knows where his audience is. He makes the movies he likes and wants to make and doesn't have to have a lot of the stress that comes with this industry.
Ok, this might sound weird, but please hear me out, I am a Kevin Smith fan, but I am not a fan of his films, stay with me though. So I discovered him online, through one his podcasts, or possibly he was a guest on someone else's, and I was surprised by how intelligent he was, which made me watch, he was talking about Super Hero's or Possibly Star Wars (you get the idea) and I kept on coming back for more. I then find out he is a film maker, I give a couple of his films a try, they weren't for me. But this video is so moving (I don't know if that's the word), seeing him talk about how other's opinions can have an impact on his life really got through to me, I felt like watching this was like I was having therapy. Does anyone know if he has written any books or anything like that, I'm nothing but impressed by him (except for his film's though lol, but I do admire him for his success as a film maker).
I think he has accomplished alot in his career, his Evening with Kevin Smith series were excellent rants about success and some harsh times so I hope he doesn't really feel like he's wasted any time. He has lots of stories to tell and some great movies. Plus, he's just over 40, still has lots of years left to make some more movies (and other). He has a comic book store(s?), a podcast (smod), movies, does tours where he speaks about his experiences (Evening with), married with kids. Well done sir
That whole "unreasonabilty" quote is really inspiring to me. Being a musician, that can be applied to the touring lifestyle of successful musicians. I love has films, and can total relate to him and his anecdotes, since Music and Film are both very artistic and similar to certain degrees.
Man, he really has grown wiser over these years. I've been watching him since Clerks. He went from being a pretty smart guy to being a *very* real man. Fuck yeah. Such an inspiring person. I can't stop watching these things. Especially the comiccon stuff where he talks about Bruce Willis.
I could listen to the guy talk all day. usually when people ramble on that fast it get's kinda old fast, but Kevin Smith always seems to talk about shit in a way that seems relevant and productive.
always cool to hear him speak, the part where he recalled that girl that did his focus work, that reaction was genius :P thanks for filming this Q&A i whould love to have been there in that room with you guys to hear Kev do his thing
and this right here was the first RU-vid account of Mr Jeff Bezos lol (and yep, I'm aware the math is off here by many many years, it was just one of them there joke thingies)
Any one else get a feeling that the girl to the left of the screen doesn't like him? She felt so cold especially with that "your bitter" remark. Oh well as always some really insightful words from my hero!
LOL yeah that was a weird question. That girl actually drove from Vancouver with 3 other guys from her film school. The entire time I was wondering how did she even know who he hired =)
I would agree in a way. I would never want to be hired just because I am a woman. I work hard to increase my skills. It was very weird to me that she asked that question.
Thanks! I wanted to make sure I didn't waste my question. It was really a once in a lifetime experience and I wanted to learn as much as I could from him. That is also why I asked for permission to film the Q&A. After re watching it I decided many people would enjoy this, so I posted it. Hope many people out there can find inspiration from Kevin Smith. He was just a kool guy to hang out with.
That the woman that uses her gender to get a leg up. Stop that shit, your putting down women that bust their asses to be better than everyone else. There are some amazing woman out there and your putting doubts in people’s heads that a woman needs a leg up just because she is a woman. I hate that gender politics shit, leave that shot home, this man goes out of his way to help minorities.
He's no where near as bad as people make him out to be. Chasing Amy is in my top 5 movies list. Zack and Miri was hilarious, Clerks is a classic debut and Clerks 2 was a good follow up. I'm a film student trying to make her debut film and Kevin Smith is who I think to whenever, I think 'I've got no budget or trained actors' he's proof that dreams are doable!
He is saying follow your heart, make your art. She says, You didn't have women on your crew. The one thing she was thinking about, "I looked...", and she was wrong....maybe she isn't getting work on a film crew because she isn't very good, worried about the wrong things and even getting that wrong, and not simply because she is a woman.//
Why does he assume critiques of his movies are aiming at his confidence for the joy of the critic? No way the work could be improved, it’s perfect as it came out? Also, reviews are for other potential viewers, not even for the greater themselves.
LOL This was set up by Avid. They contacted 4 schools with movie making programs, each school got to send 2 of their students to Kevin Smith's screening of Red State in Seattle. After the screening and the Q&A at the theater we were taken to a private room to meet him in person. I was really shocked that I was picked out of so many students. I also found it shocking that I was the only one who had a camera and videotaped him. I still go back and watch this when I need a pick me up. I am so glad I recorded the experience. Kevin Smith just blew my mind.
Don't be silly haha. The whole group seemed to be sharing an awesome vibe and they were comfortable. They were obviously having a good time chillin with Kevin. The girl chatting sounds very cute too Lol.
If you ever choose to re open the view askew universe you'll have if you will "my sword" AND MY AXE, and my BOW. Or if you want to go Star Wars Don't GET COCKY! Not sure if that helps but you've helped me through tough stuff. For christ sakes if you can keep the "let us fuck" t shirts in stock. Major fan, take care.
Those are the ignorant people who live in their parents basements and weigh 700 lbs. If they read anything in the news or listen the podcasts they would know the dude has lost nearly 80 lbs in the past year now.
The orange and blue colour scheme is because he loves Canada and the Edmonton Oilers is one of his favourite teams. He has multiple jerseys but the one constant on them all (or most of them) is #37! 😂
