Unified Command in Baltimore released additional photos and videos showing closeup action as the LAST Francis Scott Key bridge collapse truss was finally picked up out of the water of the Patapsco River in Baltimore, MD on June 1, 2024, about 2 months after the MV Dali ship collided with the Key bridge. It was the final bridge piece blocking the 700-foot federal channel down to 400 feet wide.
Jeff Ostroff shows some analysis mixed with videos and photos to explain the process of removing this bridge truss, where it will be taken to Sparrow Point, and how they dismantled it afterward.

The containers were outbound it would make sense to leave them in place if the bow can be repaired in a timely fashion with them in place so when repairs are completed they can resume the journey to their final destination.

Speaking of crane capacity and leaving 1/2 of the remaining truss section in the water... UK's youtube channel -- the Globe and mail --- has a great video of a nearby crane in New Jersey that is 2x's as big. It likely could have lifted the ENTIRE remaining truss section without having to cut it in 1/2 .. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yCs3yVPHJBU.html

Hi Jeff, I have been really enjoying all your content as your content was suggested when I started looking into video content regarding the Baltimore bridge collapse. Around the same time my home town of Kingston, Ontario, Canada had big issues arise regarding one of our water crossings. At the foot of Lake Ontario at the entrance to the Cataraqui River we have a Bascule Bridge that's been in operation since 1917 that allows boats to enter into the Rideau Canal system up to Ottawa. During scheduled repairs the bridge was damaged and closed for inspection. Now the bridge has been deemed not feasible for repair and will be demolished. I believe you would love to have a look into what has happened here even if you weren't to make any content about it, I would love to hear your thoughts on some of what happened. The bridge is controlled by public services and procurement Canada (PSPC) and is known as the Lasalle causeway crossing. the site below is where you can find the updated information on it as well any Google search will bring up the news articles. Happy reading canada(DOT)ca/en/public-services-procurement/services/infrastructure-buildings/bridges-docks-dams/lasalle-causeway(DOT)html

It is my understanding that the containers will not be removed until all of the remaining bridge debris is removed from the bow. The goal is to keep Dali as stable as possible while removing those enormous concrete support struts that collapsed across the forecastle. It would require constant re-ballasting as the containers are removed, and that cannot happen while salvage is still underway.

@@samscaggs2270 - that makes zero sense. If they can load a cargo ship, and unload it at the destination port, how is that any different than unloading it in Baltimore? Cargo ships are loaded and unloaded strategically. All they'd have to do is, well, unload it strategically right where it is. It's going to be unloaded anyways. None of that cargo is going to Sri Lanka on the Dali.

The white (and blue) gantry cranes can move from side to side along the pier, so when ready, they don't move the Dali, they will slide the cranes down and go to work.
@ibbylancaster8981

Jeff, I am no mariner, but I would be willing to bet that they’re not removing containers due to weight and balance primarily. Don’t forget, Dali was due to go to Singapore, I believe, so most of these containers were likely destined overseas and will eventually be cross docked to another ship once all the debris is cleared. I have heard that she’ll be moved to Norfolk and I would imagine that the original shipper has been in the process of scheduling another ship to carry the load to the ultimate destination. Just spitballing but I think Sal Mercagliano from What’s Going on With Shipping channel has made mention of it. Thank you for the continued coverage of the cleanup. Much love to you from North Carolina 🤙🤙

Hi Jeff, Was in shipping most of my life… USA port calls are usually last for customs reasons… shippers return mostly ‘empties’ to Asia, though some carry cargo. That’s why the vessel draft is shallow; she’s “light“. The garbage bags are called “big bags” 1m x 1m, made of tyvek or woven polyester (Fema tarp). Really enjoy your channel, especially the engineering detail… fascinating and informative… surfside condo and titan are my favs… keep up the great work… I appreciate your engineering knowledge and great presentations!!

The reason most of the containers are onboard is that the Dali needs to clear under a bridge to get to open water and transit to the Norfolk VA area for bow repairs - and it cannot do that if it was unloaded. The Dali needs most of those containers onboard to keep the top of the ship low enough to clear some bridge. I'm unsure if they are planning to offload containers in the Norfolk area, or if they will remain on until the ship can deliver them - very late. The crushed containers on the bow of the ship will likely be removed before the ship leaves; but perhaps I am wrong on that. My understanding is that insurance has already been paid the the shippers for the crushed containers on the bow, and for any containers onboard that contained items that were time sensitive and could rot due to the delayed delivery.
@Boxcarphilly

@@Boxcarphillythe highest part is the bridge or smokestack. Either way not the container stack. The weight of the containers helps the hull displace more water, namely by pushing it deeper. This how buoyancy works. If the weight of the ship exceeds that of the displaced water, it sinks.

I believe the gantry cranes are mobile and can move along the dock to wherever they are needed. Many years ago I sailed on Great Lakes ore boats for a while and the Hulett machines used to unload the ore were similar, although they had large clam scoops as the business end, for scooping loose bulk caergo. These machines were on tracks and could be moved back and forth alongside the boats. If I am wrong about the container cranes someone please correct me, but I would be amazed if they are fixed in place.

Couple things I wanted to mention. Firstly, I delayed clicking on your kitchen project, as my interest was what are the events going on with the Key Bridge collapse. Glad I did see the project video, as that had to be a source of great personal pride! Nothing I can add, as your video speaks for itself! My second point was related to multiple inquiries as to the time schedule to unload the Dali containers. Firstly, the Dali was on its way exiting Baltimore to parts unknown. I understand the next stop will be Newport News (?) Without knowing, I suspect the final destination was not Virginia(?) Regardless, is it possible to repair the bow there to complete its final destination? Apparently, there was not extreme bow damage that caused flooding for the relocation. Just a thought. Appreciate your posts!

Those white gantry cranes you referred to towards the end of this video are on rails and can be moved along that entire birth if everything is working. My assumption is that if they want they can move the cranes over to the Dalia and unload if they want. You can see the tracks in the overhead shots and the wheels at the bottom of the cranes. I use to live near a port as a kid and spent a great deal of time checking this out.

The rate at which they can lift an item is dependent on how many lines are on the pulling cable , because if you have one line and it's looped back on its self 7- 10 times the more its looped the more that it can lift . And for every foot of cable wrapped on to the spool from pulling it may only raise up a fraction of an inch.

Speaking of the "last remaining truss" & media reports not 100% accurate -- Most media outlets usually do the best they can-- but often build their stories upon the new releases they recieve. Take a look at Canada's GLOBE & MAIL newspaper's -- youtube channel that compared the Chessy 1000 to another nearby crane in New Jersey that is 2x's as big. It likely would have lifted the ENTIRE remaining truss section without having to cut it in 1/2. Unfortunately that bigger crane does not belong to those doing the current salvage work.

Scary thought about the containers is if some illegal things went on and some containers were used for human trafficking...

It's not true about being 'stuck in the mud' -- you can see there is Zero Mud anywhere on any girders. Zero, not even the slightest discoloring.

I think they will not remove the containers, rather get it down to Norfolk for repairs and then move on. It would be very expensive to remove all the containers and then have to put them on another ship. Where would they store 4000 containers anyway? They would fill a football stadium.

@jeffostroff - If you watch the still camera and high speed video that CDI group did of the blasting of the key bridge struss using shape charges, including showing their own camera mount failing due to shockwave damage - you'll see that your favorite unlucky traffic cone still stands stong before, during, and after the blast. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CbssS4f100U.html
