In todays video I'm going to attempt to teach my dog how to find lost keys and indicate in only one day!

Command from a Distance: • How to Teach Your Dog ...
►►Stay Command: • EASILY Teach Your Dog ...
Before we start training our dogs, we must know what motivates them. With any dog I start training, I like to begin with food and luring. Now, something I’m often asked by people is, “How do I train my dog when my dog doesn’t have any food motivation?” First, let me start by saying that every dog has food motivation, what varies is how intense the food motivation is. If you have a dog with low food motivation, there are techniques that you can use to increase that food drive.
Most dog’s low food motivation is caused by a few things: Either the dog has been overfed, free-fed, given very high value food such as cooked steak, or sometimes just feeding out of a bowl can cause this. As a result, the dog just doesn’t care that much about getting fed as a reward.
A common technique that we like to use to correct a lack of food drive is food deprivation. For this you will want to use mealtime as a training time. Bring the dog out and offer food to train, if the dog is not interested, no big deal, put the food away and try again at dinner.
Again, if the dog is not interested, put the food away and try again the next day. Continue to do this until your dog is willing to work for the food. Be sure not to give the dog any food between training. The dog has to know that he will only get food that he works for. I’ve used this technique on dozens of dogs and it’s worked every time.
When we first start teaching a new command to a dog we start with continual reinforcement. Meaning, we reward the dog for the completion of every behavior we are teaching. Once the dog is performing the behavior on the command alone without the help of the physical cue, we then start spacing out the rewards.
The idea is that the dog must believe there is a possibility that he will receive a reward, but not that he will always receive a reward. Another way to look at it is when you first start training a dog, you are a vending machine. Every dollar (behavior) your dog puts in, they get their reward. Once your dog knows the command you must transition to a slot machine. Meaning, every dollar (behavior) your dog puts in, no longer guarantees a reward, but the hope is there. Just like people continue to put money into a slot machine, your dog will continue to perform behaviors for the possibility of the reward.
Once your dog is performing a behavior on the command alone, you can start spacing out the rewards.
Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next one.

Our 14 week old Newfie is potty trained, sits, heels, sits, stays and will sit and stay for her meals. Nate I thank you. I LOVE training my dog and I really think she loves the interaction. BTW, I taught her to ring a bell to go potty. She now rings the bell and sits by her water bowl for more water. lol. So yes, dogs get the training and think beyond the commands. I love how I feel like we're a team when training. Again thanks for the videos.

I have two Keeshond puppies. 16 weeks old. Been training them for 2 months. They are super smart and LOVE training sessions!!! So far I have only used their puppy food (that they eat everyday) during all sessions. They view it as a reward, so I continue to keep use it. They are VERY food driven. I never understood about training with “yes” AND “free”. They definitely know what yes means. And they also know that “good boys” means affection as the reward. What I want to know is it too late for me to change things up so that they learn “yes” means to stay in that position???. Recently I was teaching them “stay”. But I would like to teach them with the “free” command instead, as it seems this will make a huge difference in future training..... using your videos as a guide. I live in the mountains and often people and dogs get lost in the woods. I have a dream of my pups becoming helpful in searches. That’s where I hope my training can take them 🤗

I’ve watched your channel with huge interest! Big fan! Always practical advice, unlike many of the other ones that go on and on and on and don’t actually show you how to do things - no offense to the rest, but this channel is light years ahead! I’ve thought my dog so many things, my entire neighborhood thinks I’m a professional trainer when they see what my GSD puppy can do! I always recommend them this channel! Nate, I have a question (I hope you see this) - I noticed that as of late my dog is kinda losing his focus when we do our drills (I do them multiple times, every day). We exercise with his regular food (kibble). He’s 5 months old now, the biggest things I’m struggling with is his focus when we’re outside - I call him and he’s distracted with something else and doesn’t respond. It takes a while for him to look over to me and when I recall, he hesitates. Your dog is super focused and responds immediately. Before our training sessions I do what you’ve suggested about having your dog look at you, mark and reward. Is it normal for his age to be this distracted? Should I switch to high value rewards when we’re outside? Am I not enthusiastic enough? Am I doing the exercises too much (it’s about 5 minutes, 3 times a day), or too little perhaps? Your advice would be highly appreciated! Sorry for the long post! Keep up the good work!

Great video as always! This kind of challenges are very exciting! With a lot of training, the whole thing should work on a larger scale, right? I'm thinking about teaching my nose-crazy dog (already doing rescue tracking work with her) to find wild garlic in the local forest or mushrooms in the fall.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 года назад
Absolutely! This would be the first step. I would repeat the process in new environments until the dog is generalized to the training. This is the concept that the dog knows that a command applies in any situation. This is where the dog’s proficiency in the training and desensitization really comes into play. A dog that has generalization ability knows to “sit” whether at home, in a busy dog park, in a shopping mall, a park with squirrels, you get the idea. A dog that is less well-trained may only sit at home, but once exposed to a new environment, the training goes out the window. This is what we seek to avoid happening via training our dogs in multiple environments. A superstar dog will sit obediently and perform necessary tasks in virtually any situation. Thanks again for watching and commenting! 😁🙏🐕

Great video thank you. We have been doing the “find it” game with toys. I’m assuming though if I want my dogs to find specific objects that are lost I also need to teach them the word such as keys, phone etc. how would teaching them the word for the object be brought into the training? Using the phrase “find keys” maybe? Whilst using the keys as the object. Would that work?

Thanks Nate, amazing videos! Im trying this with my dog but I have a question. On the third step where I throw the keys and then release my dog with de cue "Search it", he start to sniff out to find the keys but when he see it he tries to pick up the keys and bring it to me instead of lay down beside the keys even though I give it the command lay down. At the middle of the way he lays down and throw the keys. How I can change this?

Yes and yes. 😁 I just use "find it," and if something is randomly on the ground, the dog will usually indicate. I've done this to pass a key search and a pistol search in a 1-acre field, and the command was the same.

Hi Nate, no naming what to find? Keys, ball, article, dowel, sock "find it"? Or is the idea that they sniff whatever has your freshest scent? Also, Arih cuddles...that paw "hey I found your keys many times today, don't you dare stop the pets" LOL

Great question. I don't have a video on that. However, I've taught a few dogs to allow it and it can vary in difficulty. This is basically how I do it, but it can take a little while for the dog to get comfortable with it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-54WroRd1GiA.html

Hey I dont know if you can do anything about this but my mom wont let me get a dog because we have cats but if I get a puppy can I train him to not like bark and chase my cats? also I go to school everyday so in the summer would it be okay to put the dogs crate outside and have a leash on the dog so that if im at school when its like not snowing out my mom will not have to let the dog out to use the bathroom? Sorry that was confusing basically I mean on the days im at school when its warm out is it okay to keep my dog on a leash outside the whole day im at school but keep his crate there too? Also please dog video on how to get your dog to not attack and bark at other animals or should I try leash presser? Also where can I go to have someone give me a dog to train as a service dog cause I wanna train service dogs?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 года назад
You may find an organization that'll let you help them with the service dog training. You can also rescue a dog and train it to be a service dog for someone that you personally know. For the other questions, stay on the lookout. In the next few days, I'll be releasing version 3 of my dog training manual. It'll be free for the first week of its release. 😁🐕

Hi Nate, actually i though you would need more time to train this - so thank you for teaching the steps. Question: instead of giving the command climb you used „go climb“ - any reason for this? Thank you for the answer; best regards Uli
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 года назад
Thanks! If the dog has the same motivation and drive that Arih has, then yes, you can teach it really fast. However, most dogs won't learn it this fast. Climb is the command; I just add go before it out of habit. Lol! Cheers! 😁🐕

So all of this happened is one day? Wow... does the type of breed influence the speed of learning?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 года назад
Yes. It was able to happen so quickly because of the past training as well as the breed. I've been training her since she was 8 weeks of age, it makes teaching new behaviors much easier. In addition, the pro-active dog training has a great impact as well. Not to mention, she loves to train. This is why in my manual Under advanced obedience with your puppy I say, "If you want them to be experts at something when they are older, get them to love it when they are puppies."

Is there a step I can take so she indicates without ever see them. She 100% understands the game . I hide them around the house out of view unless she directly on top of them. Thanks
