Yes Joel this is actually very similar to what alot of trainer do for search dogs that find and indicate on articles or people. A tip would be to do the treat in every foot print. That way you know for sure the dog is getting the odor do it on slightly muddy ground or somewhere you can see the person's shoe prints. I teach the indication first then work on the actual track. For Alison he picked it kinda ok but if you really want him to have the drive and not to get off track you will want to go slow. For accuracy. But since your not looking for a dog actually to go into work as a tracker or competition pretty good first try!

I started scent detection in 2012 when my dog was 6 months old. His first object was cell phones. Then we started search and rescue in the woods and in warehouses, in trains, and in lumber yards, then we tried tracking and then nose work. These type of activities is the best way to get a self confident dog. Just a tip... when you drag the jacket, just drag it one way, don’t drag it back. That’s because the dog will know which direction he should go. So when a person is missing and the dog is crossing the track then the nose is so powerful that he knows which step is more fresh. And that’s the direction the dog will follow. All of these nose activities are a lot of fun!

Yes!, more! I've been scent training our lab and he loves it. We put a scent like cinnamon on a cloth. Let him smell it then hide it in the yard ( up a tree, under leaves etc.) While we're hiding it he's in the shed waiting. We let him out saying " Find it" So fun to watch him sniff the ground, up in the air, and running around. It's amazing how fast he can find it!!!

This sounds so fun! I want to try with my two younger girls. How do they know what scent to follow when hiding it. Do they smell it first and then you hide it or how do you do it?

We do similar with our dobie pup, except we began by hiding several treats of the same type in different places of the house, letting him smell one from our pocket, then getting him to go find. Dogs are so smart. We’re about to train him with human scent, so this is very timely! Thanks Joel.🤝

A few years ago when my senior dog started to lose sight and hearing I would get my younger dog to "find Molly" initially it would be for him to go get her for dinner (Darby is very food motivated so he was happy to go get her for dinner lol), then i'd do it as part of doggie drills, all he had to do was go wake her up and get her to follow him. Was put to test a couple times in the bush when she wandered off and I couldn't find her. Once was a couple hours between realizing she wasn't with me to getting him looking and them coming back. This little girl had a ground eating trot, she was never running away, just off on tour. It was getting too dark to see, I'm thinking I've lost BOTH dogs now, then Darby came bounding back along the trail looking so pleased, Molly trotting along behind a couple minutes later. I got Tile bluetooth finders after that, but still had Darby go find her for practice :)

I had a bloodhood search and rescue team practice at my farm once! It was incredible, we laid a 36 hour trail, my step-daughter walked a trail in the woods and 36 hours later her scent article was shown to the dog and he followed her path to find her. She had gone back to wait the day of the trial, 36 hours after walking the path through the woods, Windsor, the bloodhound, followed her path ! It was AMAZING. We trained our collie to play hide and seek with the kids when they were young I the event they ever walked into the corn field when the corn was high and got lost !

My two young girls always find me lol and they’re too fast for me to hide, even in the dark lol. Then they’re all proud of themselves when they find me. I think yesterday, I tried hiding under the table quick before they saw where I hid and at first they were gonna walk by but then my youngest found me easily and then the older one lol. So much fun playing hide and seek with dogs.

Hi Joel, First I have to say I love your videos a lot and have huge respect for your training methods. As a Human Remains dog handler for a Search and Rescue Association I would qualify this as tracking. Your knowledge of dogs is great but the only issue here is knowing scent behavior. Unfortunately this wouldn't work for disaster scene but to track someone in the woods possibly 😊

Yes, please. I'd like to see how to train retrieve dropped items and hand them to the owner. I live in Arizona with a significant aging population. Many people come to me and want their pets to learn this skill so they don't have to bend over and risk a fall. It might also be fun if you did a video on allergy service dogs that smell a food item and indicate whether or not the allergen is present. Also psychiatric service dogs skills like deep pressure therapy and interrupting crying or self-injurious behavior. I bet you'll have as much fun making the videos as we will watching them. 😁🐕💖

Jobs videos would be interesting to watch but honestly, I haven’t found a video yet on this channel that hasn’t been educational, interesting and just good quality content. I like that most of these videos are what I would consider to be the basics that every dog and owner should have a good understanding of and practice daily. Too many people just skip the basics and go beyond their skill level and then we have accidents and dogs that are frustrated and people that are frustrated. I wish more people took the time to learn the basics. I think it would prevent a lot of incidents.

That's a lot of fun! When we did this in puppy training, we had like small perforated boxes that we put cheese, sausage or other treats in. The dog stayed at their place, while we dragged that box over the ground. There where pilons scattered around where we placed the box. At first only 5 meter, then 10, then 15. Then we told them to search. You'd think they would see where we put the box and immediately go there, but it was actually a bit challenging. Even the 5 meter one. A proper rescue includes barking when you find the person. Would you teach that seperately and then introduce it when the search is reliable?

First let me say I loved this video as I do ALL your videos. I'd like to see Connery off lead being successful. I would really enjoy seeing videos on how to train carrying a backpack with stuff in it. Our two Germans had a paper route. Of course we had to roll the papers; put them in their backpacks and walk them around their route but they got to the point where they knew which houses to stop at. It was only a weekly paper but they seemed to look forward to Saturday mornings! How would you train them to pull a little wagon? Run next to a bike? Herd the chickens back into the coop? Protect the chickens from prey birds? Go get - like go get the newspaper and bring it back. In closing, let me say that I encourage all my dog owner friends to watch your videos and subscribe. You are caring and honest person. I feel like you really care for the dogs and the owners you help. Your channel isn't just a vehicle to sell stuff like others I've seen.

For my pup, the first thing I did was “find it.” I would hold an object, make sure he sniffed it, then hide that same object. I’d walk around and cue him by snapping to get his attention onto sniffing certain areas, and when he found the object he got rewarded with his toy. At first the cues were practically leading him to the object, but I faded that out and just made the cue area bigger and more generalized. I would also change the object every time, and sometimes I would hide the previous object as well as the new one. I also got him in a habit of sitting after he located it like a signal so that I’d know that he found it. That really helped my pup to understand that he needed to sniff around and he lock on the scent. I slowly started to have one object already hidden and the one he sniffed to be the same, like the example scent (like the hoodie). Our next step is going to be adding the human element. Now that he has an understanding fundamentally of what he’s supposed to do, it should be pretty easy to switch his target. I’m going to be doing the same with his little sister (less than 1 yr old now) and I think I’ll try to record the process since it’s so hard to find examples of this kind of work. I really do appreciate that you’ve uploaded this. The only thing I would change is that, instead of using treats, to reward with a toy. There are people who may be missing that could be using controlled substances, or the dog may be smelling gasoline from a vehicle, and we do not want them to ingest those things. Toys are very motivating and the expectation of a play thing rather than eating can protect the pup from elements outside of your control
