Description: While the literature is clear that both social emotional learning (SEL) and culturally responsive instruction (CRI) are necessary to address educational inequity, these two areas of thought and action have been kept separate in discussions of educating the whole child. Too often we approach socialemotional development (SED) activities with a “race and culture” neutral stance despite the fact that we live in a structurally racialized society. Given this reality, it is important to understand why culturally responsive practices should be an important part of how we frame and practice social-emotional teaching and learning in schools with majority minority student populations, racially and culturally diverse student populations, as well as with majority white student populations.
