Hi and Merry Christmas! Thanks to you, I gained the knowledge to buy my first scope. Got a Siglent SDS 2202X-E. I wanted to make sure I do not grow out the first scope to fast. I was surprised how small it it. I also acquired a signal generator and power supply from Siglent. Unfortunately, the power supply is DOA. Kind of concerning. I fed the scope with a square wave and fired up the FFT. Came up fast and looks good but still need to learn how to adjust the screen and complete measurements. I found a Bode Plot button. I thought that was a SA function? Thanks for the videos and keep them coming. I am going to try to reproduce your AB amplifier video. Thanks, Brad

takes me back many years to the 60's when I went to electronic schools in the USN. One fact a square wave is made of many old hamonics of the first signal. Also worked on a computer that used delay line magnostrictive memory. The computer used a 24 bit word. with the first bits called guard bits (but we called them goof bits. Used a hp time delay scope to read the words on the screen for diagnostics.

Eddie, again great video and postproduction improvements. According to your knowledge and ability to share it in proper way, I’ll suggest you to do some oscilloscope video series where you will cover scope functions in practical way/real world usage. Mostly, videos that treat the theme are “introduction to the oscilloscope” (AFG connected to one or more channels with Edge triggering - Auto mode and cursor measuring, and that’s it )but not many with explanation about: How to independently trigger two or more channels- alternate trigger When to use trigger hold off Why Auto trigger is bad option when processing serial communication, When Normal mode is great option, or how RUNT can prevent headache :), pulse trigger etc.. How to find glitches in signal. Than maybe to explain measuring: What is Mean, RMS, Cycle RMS etc.. and what they tell us. Connect: some analog sensor-> MCU -> PC and show us Oscilloscope in the whole glory:) A lot of youngsters told me that they tried to learn about scope from Kangaroo Dave but, with his flying fingers all over the scope and mouth rapid fire all they’ve got is brain hurts. You are different and you can do it understandable.

Great demonstration of the difference of FFT usage at every scope. About your editing in this video: I think you have made a fine jump forward in quality, your idea with using the red comment bars is a great help, wary easy to see and read and looks more professional, also the fact that you place them where they cover least of what is important on the screen. I do also really like the way you have cut your zooms. I.e. at 7:19 you make it almost invisible that you go from moving the camera to a proper framing of the scoops screen. Then about the length of your video, if you have to demonstrate three scopes in the level of details you do here, I can't see how you could do it in a shorter time. Only thing may be that it did look a bit like you used some time to search and learn the scopes, while making this video. Maybe a plan on what you did want to demonstrate at one scope, copied out to every scope, could have made it more consistent. It would have made your planning time a fair bit longer but made your recording and editing way more easy. All in all do I think you are getting better and your experimenting, do pay off! :-) Last do I like that you did mention your patreon, in a subtle way but still so that people know you have one, it's only by repeating you get more to support you. :-)

@@KissAnalog You are so welcome, I think it was a great idea to leave it in. The only thing is if a "first timer" sees your video while you "feel your way" can it look like you do not know enough about what you are demonstrating, what you clearly do, I am just thinking of your channel's image and the comfort it give to be led by an expert. But again, you are come fare from when I as a newly subscriber no. 54, did have that fantastic luck to find your channel! :-)

I need some advice. I have a Siglent 200mhz 2gs scope. I also purchased a Rigol SA. I intended to send the Rigol back, sell the Siglent and buy the same Instek MDO you have. The Instek MDO is not available till early March, only the 100 mhz scopes are available. I am now thinking about keeping the scope and Rigol SA. Its overall more expensive but at least I have them. The Siglent has BODE functionality using a sig gen. I think I asked this before but could not locate the question. Is BODE the same as FRA in the Instek? Do I lose FRA if I keep the Siglent and Rigol SA?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 года назад
Brad Rich Brad Rich Ok yes the FRA is what Provides the Bode. The scope has 2 built in function generators so it can sweep one of them to provide the bode plot. The Siglent also has an FFT to I Meg depth I would bet, so that nearly covers the capability as the GW... The SA of the GW does cover low frequencies but the FFT can basically reproduce this. The SA of the Rigol probably goes to much higher frequency.

@andyj2106
@andyj2106 4 года назад
I could do, Siglent have an attachment for it for about £250. Could use a separate generator as well of course. I can do FFT right now, and have done on one of my circuits just to see. If I had the upgrade I could have reproduced your test to see if this model got the same results. Perhaps I’ll add it to my list for Santa!

Is a Bode plot possible using a spectrum Analyzer? Can you show the SA in use on the Instek 2204EG?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 года назад
Yes it is possible to show a type of Bode plot with a spectrum. I once had a spectrum but no way to do a Bode plot, but then I realized that I had a white noise generator with a broad bandwidth, so I the spectrum showed the amplitude across the frequencies and it looked like a Bode with the space below the curve filled in;). I think I have shown that in at least one audio amplifier review. But, I have meant to do a video demonstrating that as a comparison to the FFT. I'll put that on my short list;)

@tictacX1
@tictacX1 3 года назад
With your criteria, I chose one already. A bit pricier than 300$US. Found a good deal from Transcat for a Siglent SDG2042X at 673$ CAD (500US$) all included (tax, s&h, no duty). That's a 100$ less than the Amazon price. Might be useful for someone else looking for a generator.

Does some entry or intermediate level DSO have a FFT function with calculation like THD, THD + N and the basic 5, 6 calculations for measuring of analog audio signals / 20 hz to 20Khz and bandwidth of 200 Mhz? FYI Kiss: Link provided in "MORE" for Amazon is not valid. I think Amazon no longer carries Keysight. Keysight probably thought it was not very "prestigious" for their scopes to be available on Amazon, i.e. it "cheapens" the brand name.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 года назад
Thanks for that feedback! I wonder if they are working on a new deal with Amazon for 2021? Or if production got set back with this virus thing and they focused on building the $20k plus scopes? Hard to say, but I think Siglent and others have bitten into their sales for their so called entry level scopes. The MDO scope from GWInsek offfers so much power - that it competes with their mid level scopes.
@DIYerGuy
@DIYerGuy 3 года назад
Yes, I guess that's a possibility Eddie. And yes again, in that the other brand scopes have bitten into Keysight's entry-level scopes, especially the Instek MDO's in the 2000E/X series with the built in Spectrum Analyzer, 2-ch ARB Generator, and on the X series a Digital Meter and 5V-1amp power supply - I mean that's just a killer combination I've seen no where else that's like dying and going to heaven :). On the basis of your video where you cover some of the MDO-2204EG I decided to get the 2074EX, which is the same as the 2204EX but maxes out at 70 MHz rather than 200 MHz as on the 2204Eg/Ex because my focus is on "low frequency" audio specific work, so it works out, especially price-wise. Thanks for your review of that MDO scope, it was very interesting and useful for me and it was the clincher that led me to order it.

I have a few questions we see a lot of noise Is it noise from the source or from the scope ( fase )noise of the scope ? The noise floor on 80 dB is a 20 dB beter then the old spectrumanalyzers 60 dB was great the bumps between the odd Harmonics are that the even Harmonics Why are the not dropping down like the odd ? The noise can be canceld out for a few dB so more then 80 dB dynamic range Another question is how close in freqency can you put a second signal and strength ? Without making signals in the analyzer Thanks in advance for your answer And what a lucky guys are we today , My old Takeda Riken Spectrumanalyzer I sold it for about 50 cts a KG weighed about 60KG and now about 2 kg

I have a Siglent SDS 1202X-E and everything it's ok... I just tried and it works very well on Vrms too, just like on dBVrms. Maybe you need to update the firmware, I don't know... it's possible to be the software issue, when math computing chip inside, takes the levels from input stage, on different units and scales, who knows... You should try update the firmware.

Great question! I tried to be neutral and simply show how the FFT functions worked on each scope. But for me, the Instek has the better and more flexible FFT as far as measurements and search tools - and of course the resolution (1 Mts). The newer Siglent matches that depth, but this GW Instek also has the search tools and measurement tools.
