I avoided the Grateful Dead as much as possible until a year or two ago. During my younger days when I loved psychedelics, Mushrooms, LSD,DMT,etc I spent a ton of time in several music circles. I knew the hippy circles, I bought drugs from them, but in many of the punk/hardcore/art rock/experimental rock circles I was in and played with, there was nothing more uncool to dig,than the Dead. So only in more recent times, as a person in her early 40s, who no longer cares about what's cool, and who has no time for psychedelics, stumbled upon the Dead and what makes their music so special to those who love it. Jerry Garcia compared the Dead to licorice. 'We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice,really like licorice.' It's a strange thing to explain, but once you're on board, you're in for life lol. And this is purely the music. It's harder for modern audiences, with festivals everywhere during the summers, multiple stage multiple day events are common. It's hard to explain to people now, how otherworldly and unique a Dead show was up to the early 90s. And Bill Walton seemed to embrace and embody not only everything magical about the event, but the elements of freedom and free thought the music of the Dead and Bob Dylan really personify. I discovered Bill Walton the Deadhead, first, and tgen backtracked to learn about Bill the Basketball player, as if I didn't love him for just being a passionate Deadhead, finding out he was a legendary center made him that much more awesome.
