Evacuation of Kham Duc May 12, 1968
In early April1968, intelligence analysts began to observe that Kham Duc was threatened. On May 3, 1968, large enemy forces were again reported in the camp's area, and shortly thereafter a captured insurgent revealed that his unit was scheduled to attack Kham Duc.
With about 4 damaged aircraft struren on and around the runway it made landing rescue aircraft difficult. Additional aircraft were shot down outside the perimeter of the camp including the C-130 of Col. Bucher's which included the crew and approximatly 200 passengers, none of which survived. This aircraft lose became the worst in avaition history.

That's an outstanding first-hand account of an extraordinary combat experience, with great care taken to give all credit due to the flight crew and others. Thank-you.

Thank you for sharing this. My Dad was there. Tsgt. Blaine W. Jones. He was a Flight Engineer on the C 130 and a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroism. Did you know him by any chance?

Your dads name doesn’t ring a bell, I was with the 50th TAS out of CCK, Taiwan. I flew with many different C-130 crews because I was an Instructor and would fly with all the new Loadmasters that went incountry. I thank your dad for his service.

My wifes cousin was the Forward Observer for D company 1/46 Infantry of the 198th Light Infantry Brigade. Things got so bad he called in artillery and air strikes on his own position. He was shot through his left thigh and his right lung. His right trigger finger was shot off. I joined A company 1/46 Infantry six months later. The guys were still talking about Kham Duc. They said they were shooting NVA soldiers that had run inside Chinooks that were trying to take off.

This is going to sound really strange but I'm going to put it out there anyway. I was born in 1965 and knew a lot of these vets growing up and know the things they went through. Even though way too young, I consider this my war. I watch every video, read every story and am extremely well informed on the entire thing. They didn't get the recognition they deserved so maybe thats why I feel so strongly about these folks. Thank God for them

Anybody wanting to show an interest into something that should not have been especially an unpopular war……have at it. I was part of it, as I said I was the Loadmaster on the “Lucky Duc” and felt very lucky that I’m able to put the video and write this today. I appreciate all support from anyone giving it today. We never got the support then and now some 50+ years later there are still people that don’t get it. It’s kinda like when someone dies, a lot of people come out of the woodwork to say that this person was so admired and how great they were……but never said anything like that when they were alive. The real hero’s were the ones that came home in a body bag, their loved ones will never know their love again. I respect you for acknowledging the fact that we were treated poorly after returning home but the people that need to be recognized are the survivors of the ones who never made it back to them alive. They have been the ones treated unfairly. Thanks for your support.

Along with Sf's was B/ 2/ 1 196th LIB. We were taken out gy Chinook , circling to gain altitude while jets came in underneath us strafing and bombing.. We watched that c-130 take off straining to gain altitude then the sound of heavy weapons firing , smoke started pouring out , then the cloud of smoke that let us know they had been shot down.

I'm a Vietnam/Draft resistor. I kept up on all the news during those years on a daily basis. I never heard of these American defeats/failures...which videos on RU-vid indicate were plentiful. I'm sick and tired of Vietnam veterans bitching about the bad "press" they got by a biased Media. I'm also disgusted with their bitterness about "politicians" and the "American public". If anything...all the videos I've watched on RU-vid about Vietnam...and even veteran interviews support what the public was given by the Media back then. The Media back then was NOT the Media of today. I've concluded that the Military was withholding of news to the public.

You have a right to your opinion, views and beliefs. That’s why I entered the military so that every American could continue with those rights. My father before me fought in WWII. I didn’t believe we needed to be in Vietnam but felt if it would help any of the people of Vietnam retain any of their rights and keep their country then I did the right thing. Your having the right to your opinion proves myself and hundreds of thousands, those too that didn’t make it home did the right thing. Thanks for your opinion.

@@Capricorn471 Pal... I don't drink your kind of Kool Aid. I didn't just get off the "banana boat"...I lived those days too. YOU did nothing for me, my family, my neighbors, yourself and your family by being in Vietnam. You did NOT fight for my right of opinion...only in your head that may be true. There are tons of people that contribute to my well-being as an American that have nothing to do with the military. I have done the same for them in my life. You have a problem with the way you connect the "dots" in life. You connecting your choices and actions to my freedom as an American is a liberty YOU claim in your own head. It is not reality. Regarding the Vietnamese. Go ahead an be a mercenary for them. But many of those 60000 men who died didn't have that conviction...so they shouldn't have been pressured to go. Again, my right to an opinion is NOT indebted to you...especially as it pertains to Vietnam. That's not even a stretch....it's a delusion you maintain. I play this "game" with you veterans on this subject virtually every day.

@@Capricorn471 Btw...I thought I would include this since you are probably a person that makes false conclusions and assumptions. I am pro-military and pro-military service. I fully acknowledge what the military contributes to my freedom and "right to my opinion" on a daily basis. They play an important part...they are by no means the whole. Nevertheless, that discussion has absolutely nothing to do with the war in Vietnam.
@Capricorn471

@@topgeardel again, you have a right to your opinions but and I say BUT….. I do not make false conclusions or assumptions. I have a brother that was active Marines in the 70’s….. he was at Camp Lejeune when the water contamination occurred that the Marines, our government and sooo many people kept secret from everyone. He was diagnosed with cancer about 10 years ago with doctors and himself wondering how he may have contracted it. Needles to say that some 40+ years later it’s determined it was from Camp Lejeune. He is still with us but went through all of his savings and more to treat this with no assistance from the government and their silence. So DON’T accuse me SIR of false conclusions and assumptions. I agree with you in many way about our government and the media, they both do not tell the truth and as far as I’m concerned they both instigate situations. You are as much wrong as you are right and I am sure I am too.
@topgeardel
@topgeardel 3 года назад
@@Capricorn471Lol. Of course you make false conclusions and assumptions. When you allude that your involvement in Vietnam was connected to my enjoying a right to my opinion as an American....that's plain BS. When you say that stuff....you are implying indebtedness. There are really a lot of your fellow vets that would agree with me. They knew they were pawns and not the preservers of anyone's freedom. As far as my initial comment...I think the Military withheld a lot of "bad" news from everyone. You can't make the government, the politicians and the Media your whipping boy all the time. And I'll say this as well. There were 2 kinds of men during the Vietnam war. Those that "bent over" for the Government....and those who stood up and resisted the Government. Real patriots stand up to their Government when it is clearly wrong. Vietnam was an incredibly huge detriment to the security and morale of the US. The price for being there far, far outweighed the cost of avoiding the war.
