I feel like I found a gold mine. I was just about to start exploring all this and you have done it for me. Thank you a thousand times. I’m not of SE Asian descent but can read Thai Khmer and Lao. Fascinated with origins of and connections between scripts and the historical inferences. Your research is outstanding. Good luck and all the best.
Wow so rare for ppl from other area to study central SEA languages not 1 but 3 though Thai and Lao are pretty much 60-70% similarly but it's still pretty hard languages for foreigner. May i ask where are you from? If you don't mind telling
Being a Khmer with a set of Thai grandparents on my mother's side, she taught me exactly more or less as you show in your video. My mother is perfectly bilingual in Khmer and Thai. So I knew from an early age how the Khmer script and Thai script are related. You're amazing.
Thank you very much. We as Thais are truly appreciated. Your explanation is very clear and truthful. Your example and your logic to compare to English language are on point. We as Thais has been trying very hard to explain to Khmer people in every aspect but they kept on denying the facts, Khmer people only rely everything on Angkor Wat without having a heart to learn the truth. We, Thai, are accepting our roots both languages and cultures came from India and then we adapt, develop, evolve, and reserve until become Thailand that people around the world see today. On the contrary, Khmer lost their own culture and identity throughout history due to colonialism and several wars. When Khmer reached peaceful time, Khmer leader asked Thai to help restore their cultures by teaching Khmer Thai cultures. After decade of teaching and absorbing Thai cultures, Khmer starts claiming Thai cultures as their own and calling Thai as Theif. That’s the root cause of several conflicts between Thai and Khmer. Thais try very hard to show all evidences, not only from Thai but from several countries to back up our evidences (China, Myanmar, Japan, French). Khmer people only respond with looking at the wall. Khmer people don’t understand the concept of adapting and evolution. I think that’s why you got attacking comments from Khmer. Good Luck. It’s nothing wrong to tell the truth.
When I was in Mor2 - Mor3 a friend of mine he was interested in Thai-Khom script. He dragged me in learning. I was with him for a while. I could still regnize some of characters you presented today. I like this series very much Thanks Jay.
OH MY GODDD!! I am so grateful to you Stuart! You did a magnificent job that none of Thai scholars do before.🙏🙏🇹🇭🇹🇭 I will share your video to the WORLD!!
Thank you so much for your detail explaining, as a young generation like me , I don’t know too much about my Khmer language , I left Cambodia for long time since 1978.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hey! take a look at additional information why khmer has spoken number different from written numbers. The Khmer's number system (spoken language) counts with five-based number (1,2,3,4,5,51,52,53,... ), like African, but Khmer took the written numbers from Khom Thai (0-๙).
Honestly, I’ve never seen any Caucasian has such a deep knowledge of Asian languages at your level. I’m impressed! What you are doing is really educational for me and I’m sure for a lot of people who are willing to learn and open mind. I oftentimes came across RU-vid videos relating to overlapped literature/cultures between Thai and Khmer and let me tell you, there are always dramatic arguments at the comments section as to what belong to who. I’m so disappointed and tired of it. Please don’t let it bother you. There are many people appreciate your great contributions!
I am from the south of Thailand(Nakhon sri thammarat ) province ,my grand father told me that in the past thai chidren learn Thai-Khom at the temple with the buddist monks they wrote the alphabets on the small blackboard or " kradanshanuan" ..
In the last video minute 2:42 I think some Thai people didn't understand what he actually said or maybe they didn't pay attention to the small details. In the video he clearly said that "Khom is Khmer and it's from Khmer, that's way it's call " Thai Khmer Khom Script".

Hi, I'm majoring in Archeology at Silpakorn University. You said it every word. We read Khom and Khmer. This cannot be combined, this is the real story. But scholars still haven't found the deep stone principle of who exactly is King U-Thong. We must take this matter to study again. Thank you for your understanding of the language.
@Neicha Reich they think they have an upper hand saying things originated from India, when in fact southeast Asian (Khmer, Javanese, Balinese etc) are all uniquely UNIQUELY indigenous. (Austroasiatic influence) They are nothing but liars. Ungrateful mons and tai (the two that mixed in that country) They haven't tried to claim Javanese temples yet, but don't realize it's a baseless claim because they're (Javanese) half Austroasiatic too. Their entire culture is foundationally Khmer. From their jewelry, hand movement dance styles, everything. It's not even like the Mons. And they want to say we came after them and they gave us culture. Yuan peoples What to expect from a people who built trash temples and don't have anything of their own before coming here.
And you claim to be a 'university" student? You are wasting your money for being improperly educating then. The term Khmer was carved in the stone inscription itself. The ancient Khmer gave the so-called Tai mercenaries as Siem in the Khmer script, but the Europeans transcribed the word Siem using the Latin script as Siam. It is just like the French transcribed the name Kampuchea as Cambodge, while the English Anglicized it to Cambodia, The so-called Tai mercenaries lacked the abilities to say the word Khmer correctly. They said Khom instead. Even now, they still can't even pronounce the word Khmer correctly. They say Khamen instead. Khmer people have history in Southeast Asia since the 1st century A.D., while the so-called Tai people have only begun in the Khmer established territory during the 13th century A.D. Cleanse yourself of your ignorance and appreciate the truth. The Khmer of old were people with brilliant minds who could convert abstract ideas into physical temples for humanity to enjoy. They were also masters of engineering, creating canals and waterways travesing the land to manage the abundant water brought by the Monson rain. In the modern time, Cambodia has been cut off from most of her ancestral seas, but the government still reaches back to the historical water canal of the Old Khmer to revive it for modern transportation to gain independence from the neighboring countries.

The Khmer script was influenced by the Indic script, which has had a significant impact on the development of the Khmer written language. As a neighboring country, Thailand adapted the Khmer script to create its own unique script, which is still used today. Therefore, it can be said that the Thai script has its roots in both the Indic and Khmer scripts.
Thank you for the video. Many Cambodian people cant admit that they use Thai culture such as Sakyant which written with Khom scripts. They just love Thai cultures so much. Thank you Cambodian people too for preserving and loving Khom/Thai cultures in Cambodia ❤
As a Cambodian living in Paris, I'd like to say thank you for your clear explanation about Thai Khom Script and Khmer Script. My parents used to live in a refugee camp in Thailand during the genocide in Cambodia. They later immigrated to France and I was born there. I am sad that my parents' motherland is still poor and less developed these days. Hun Sen, the Cambodian leader didn't do any good things for this country. He just ruins the country and allows China to build a secret military base. His decision will lead Cambodia and ASEAN into troubles sooner or later. Hun Sen is getting richer while the Cambodians are getting poorer. In Cambodia, the education system is still backward compared to neighboring countries. Cambodian people lack of critical thinking. I am sorry that some Cambodians misunderstood you, Stuart Jay Raj. Please forgive them.
I wish all Khmer people thought the same as you. They have never accepted it. The country is poor because of the leader. He makes them believe what he wants them to believe even if it's fake and people easily follow everything that the government say.
I agree with politics problem but I disagree with his/her opinion. As a Khmer you shouldn't look down on your Nation or Khmer people. Lack of critical thinking??? Misunderstood ??? You don't even know about Khmer evolution and you agree with them. And you said you're a Cambodian!!! I think.

@@gottesgod4579Cambodian people today dont admit that Cambodia too got cultures from Khmer empire and thats the problem. Khmer empire fell to welcome Thailand and Cambodia. Then its Thailand who preseve and develop Khmer cultures from the empire, meanwhile, Cambodia hasnt done anything but to copy Thai cultures 😂 Who told you Cambodia is the rightful successor of Khmer empire? Its Thailand, not Cambodia. Even Thai DNA is more closely related to Indian DNA than Cambodian DNA to Indian DNA. In short, we are more Indian culturally related than you Cambodian people are. You see Wat Arun? You see Thai Grand Palace? Thai people are developers from Khmer empire, Cambodian people are followers from Khmer empire. Btw, Khmer isnt a nationality. But the reality is that every culture and language has its own identity. The important thing is to appreciate your own beauty not try to push down others.
I relieved the doubt that I did it. Grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, including adult relatives. Always write in Thai with a flick of the tail and they can read KhomThai
Both my father and grandfather were monks from Cambodia. The note that my grandfather gave me in 1885 is still in my possession. He is my short answer, they borrowed and modified it for their-tonged-tone. right - all these words are Pali / Sanskrit which are shared by Thai and many other languages across this part of the world mainly because of Buddhism and Hinduism / Brahman
@@StuartJayRaj I have been taught by my Dad to read Khmer Sangkrits and the earlier ones as well. My dad has taught me that the chanting and words/sounds of Buddas monks in Thailand are identical. Even though I am not fluent in Thai, I will be able to survive in Thailand.

Very interesting clip Stuart! I don’t think most Khmer people have any miss-understandings that Thais historically have borrowed from Old Khmer (again, Khom is only recognized by Thailand)…. The Khmers do not make the distinction between the Khmers of Angkor and themselves (the direct descendants).
