400 years ago a grand 38-day battle took place under the walls of Khotyn Fortress. The Commonwealth's troops managed to stop the advance of Sultan Ottoman II's army into Central and Eastern Europe. However, this success would have been impossible without the help of the Ukrainian Cossacks Hetman Peter Konashevich-Sagaidachny, who even outnumbered the Polish-Lithuanian troops of Jan Karol Chodkiewicz and Stanislaw Lubomyrski. The Cossacks repulsed the Turkish offensives, counterattacked, and carried out effective night raids. It was in the Khotyn War that Sagaidachny reached the peak of his military career. But in one of the skirmishes Hetman was wounded, which was fatal for him.
