Very cold temps we are getting here in the northern part of Finland (70°N). Perfect weather for a extreme temperature test in the e-niro. Let's see if it starts and if it drives!
Fun fact, this is the most northern registered EV in Finland.

May I say, concerning the charge flap door, you should be pressing it exactly at the play button ▶️ symbol which is directly in line with the charge flap release spring. This is its strongest point and will prevent air line cracks. Also because you had been charging the main battery your 12v auxiliary has been receiving 14.7 volt charging all night, so no need for the backup to kick in. Keep the videos coming, really enjoy them. 👍

Nice videos. Reminds me of my many business trips to Luleå, mostly in winters. Although it's quite more south, we made many trips into winter Lapland (snow mobiles, northern lights etc.). I have my e-Niro for almost 2 years, one of the first ones in the Netherlands. This weekend it will hit 100.000 km and with no issue at all. Last weekend we had -10 C, this weekend we will have +16 C. But during all seasons the e-Niro runs fine. Even in high Swiss winter mountains.

here in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (Canada) we 'enjoy' these extreme temps too. What I do with my gas operated car is plugging in a Blockheater, a battery warmer and a battery trickle charger. This will get the motor turned over in extreme temps and always have full battery. On the other hand, I am now less worried if I will switch to an EV here in the north. Thanks for the video

Nice Video! Thank you! Regarding battery heater, normally Kia e-niro should have from factory the following behavior: The BMS uses the temperature of lowest battery module in its logic to activate the battery heater. There are 3 conditions for the heater to activate: 1. The battery heater will come On if the SOC is less than 33% and battery temp is -5 degC or less. It goes off when battery reaches 5 degC. This seems to be for conditioning the battery for an eventual stop to a fast DC charger. The Winter Mode needs to be active for this to happen. 2. It will also be active when charging on 240v depending on battery temp as well. At -15 degC, it will engage around 82% soc. At 0 degC, it will engage around 91%. At 5 degC, activates around 93%. The Winter mode doesn't need to be active for this. 3. The battery will be active on fast charger as well. In most conditions, it will heat the battery up to to 15 degC depending of the starting % SOC. The battery will continue heating due to the heat lost during charging. Considering this behavior, maybe it's a good idea to go to the dealer to check the battery heating system.

Hi Tony, interesting video. Since you asked, I live at Barcelona, Spain, and our outside temperature is coming up to +13 degrees centigrade. I recently got a Kina Niro phev which works best for city driving on pure electrical mode while having an extended range autonomy for long distance travel. Besides, Spain is lagging in charging stations for pure electrical vehicles, specially the high power ones for quick charging, so to me a plugable hybrid car looked as a most sensible choice.

Love the channel keep up the amazing content. Regarding the gas cars 12v battery’s regularly being dead at -35 and below I’m guessing most of those batteries are 5 years old or older??? Was always a common sight in Canada to see some one getting a jump start in the morning on a cold day. As more people started driving newer vehicles and replacing there batteries the first time they wouldn’t crank over quickly you almost never see it any more. Add to that most all vehicles in Canada come with a factory block heater and in the colder parts of Canada most every one plugs in at night. The useful life of a battery in northern climates is around 5 years. After that there on borrowed time. Not many people have battery warmers, I put one on my first new car in 2000. Every other vehicle I just used the block heater. Synthetic oil also made a big difference in starting a vehicle when you forget to plug in. Love your channel 👍

Hi, you say in all your videos that your E-Niro is a 2020 model. But is is the same as mine, a MY21 model (with the silver waving bar on the dashboard and the 11" screen). I bought it July 2020, but it is the 2021 model with 3-phase charging and the UVO remote app.... I also absolutely love the E-Niro, although the Mustang Mach-E would also have been nice (but due to delays it would have arrived too late in the Netherlands because of changes in taxes). But keep the videos coming 😁

@@FinlandTony Yes, there is a difference in the year of buying/building the car and the "model year" the manufacturer gives the car. But you have the newest version of the E-Niro. If the Pajero is a Finnish spec Pajero ( with two batteries, good glow plugs, etc. from factory ), it will start fine in -35C. But you want to keep it plugged in to avoid wear on the engine. Same as in EV's, you want to keep it plugged in cold. Fossil cars that are well engineered work well in cold and most importantly don't loose range. Current EV batteries don't like cold. For example VW had a policy in Sweden that warranty is void if the car is parked below -30C for multiple nights without plugging in. Luckily they had to remove that statement.

24:10 he has some misconception about how the 12-volt auxiliary battery is charge in a EV. On ICE cars, the battery only when driving. While EV does it different. Some cars charge it all the time, some then driving and plugged inn, and som only when driving. I do not know what Kia does.
@FinlandTony
@FinlandTony 3 года назад
No misconception. The auxiliary battery is automatically charged when the vehicle is in the ready mode or the high voltage battery is being charged. Neither of which was occurring when I came out to the car. In addition, extreme cold depletes batteries, so one can still have a flat battery in -35°C even if it was fully charged the day before. In EV's, you generally need to be driving (or the car is on run mode and sitting in your driveway) or charging to put charge into the 12v battery. If the car is left standing for any amount of time, the 12v battery can get depleted. Kia does have a mode where it top up the 12v battery occasionally, but it isn't perfect. My 12v battery has gone flat when I have left things on in the car in neither charging nor run state.
@MichaelEricMenk
@MichaelEricMenk 3 года назад
@@FinlandTony As far as I know, Tesla is the only car that charges the auxiliary battery all the time. My car does it only when charging and driving. EV uses constant 12 V power for the BMS and the telecommunications is an additional draw on the battery. But parasitic load is also a problem for newer ICE cars, even without BMS, the remote unlock ++ use power. That's why the Defa packages normally comes with a battery charger. +12°C today here in the mustard city, can't complain (actually, I don't like these mildly fresh temps, either a real good sub zero cold, or a real +20 to 25°... it's these "in between" weathers that kill me) Anyhow, get your motor checked, -35 or 20, it shouldn't be making that noise... My e-Soul 64 never made a single noise like that since day 1 (which started at the dealership by -15° from Troyes in northern france and ended 20 coffees and 1300km later in Toulouse by +10° ;-) )
