Kia EV9 - A Solid Tesla Alternative? Or Is It A Flop?

Kia announced the EV9 not too long ago as an alternative 7 passenger SUV to compete with the likes of Tesla and Rivian. Although it is similar in interior size as both the Tesla Model X and the Rivian R1S, the competition for 3 row EV's is just now starting to heat up.
In a segment that is scarce with options, you really only have a few decent EV's to consider for a true 3 row SUV. The Model Y for example comes with the option for 7 passenger configuration, but that 3rd row is extremely small and is not meant for normal daily use of teenagers and older.
The Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S both add quite a bit more space for the 3rd row, but they also tip the scales at well over $80k for most configurations. With the exception of the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model X in base configuration only, there are no other 3 row SUV's that both qualify for the tax credit of $7,500, and come in under $80k.
With this limited field, Kia has found and exploited a market opening that is not currently being served. This 7 passenger segment, under $80k, is extremely limited, and affordability seems to be a major issue as well. The Kia EV9 brings both 6 and 7 passenger configurations to the segment, but also at a price that most are likely to find appealing.
The EV9 starts around $55k USD in base configuration, but that comes with an extremely limited range of 230 miles. Stepping up about $5k to nearly $60k will get you the longest range EV9 at 304 miles, but getting any AWD package steps you up to at least $64k, and max range at 280 miles.
While these range figures are not the best, the prices are significantly less than anything in the same size category. About 20k less than the cheapest Tesla Model X, and about $10k more than the cheapest Tesla Model Y.
Aside from a more traditional driving experience, the EV9 offers a ton of features, and even the base configuration offers a good assortment of basics that most consumers will appreciate. In fact, the cheapest EV9 comes with the minimum features that even I would go for, however, the range being 230 wouldn't be enough, so stepping up to at least the next trim, which is a RWD model, gets you to that 300 mile range mark, but at nearly $60k.
One of the biggest downfalls of any non-Tesla today is the inability to utilize a reliable and extensive public charging infrastructure. Although that will change in the future, for the moment, this cannot be ignored. Kia has announced their adoption of NACS, and they plan to start shipping cars with the NACS plug built directly into their cars starting at the end of this year. This takes away one of the biggest road blocks for most consumers right off the bat.
This leaves consumers with one last major obstacle, which is that you have to purchase and take delivery of the EV9 from an independently owned and operated Franchise dealer. This long hated experience is not much better even when ordering your desired configuration directly on Kia's website. In fact, dealers are able to add countless line items, Market Adjustments, and much more to the price of the car meaning that when you order the car, you dont know how much it will actually cost when you go in to actually take delivery.

Thank you for doing a review of a great alternative EV! I wish Tesla would come out with a comparable mid to full size SUV. Model X just doesn't have the leg or headspace. We ended up buying the EV9 Wind AWD. Really loving it!

Infomercial by BTG not sure why? All these reviews never talk about the important stuff like software, battery chemistry, charging speeds, heat pump, regen, etc. We have seen Hyundai Kia interiors before. I just hope these guys improve these EV's to a higher standard of engineering. They have a CA lawsuit concerning charging speeds and overheating charge ports

Key Statement is "you have seen Kia and Hyundai BEFORE". Have you seen them lately? They charge faster, they range is close or above EPA compared to other vehicles, they have heat pumps, they have Regen (better than most asn they have one paddle drive along with 3 different Regen settings, also on demand Regen with paddle shifters.. you need to look at it again. Their interior quality is way better than Toyota, Tesla and Hondas.

The 500 kg lithium battery pack for these EVs contains only several kg of lithium. It's not the lithium that makes EVs expensive. There is very little lithium in a large lithium ion EV battery compared to all of the other elements required within the battery and vehicle.

Overall, I think it's a promising vehicle, but I think they really dropped the ball by neglecting to engineer a frunk. All consumers have to deal with the compromise that a third row does to cargo capacity. They've engineered great legroom in the third row but could have put an ax in the storage capacity conundrum with a convenient frunk designed similar to the lightnings that is fully automatic, opens and closes with a button from the key fob. Many more people would use a frunk if it had easier access like this. This would have made it a killer vehicle in the segment.

The biggest miss is only 6 seat configuration for the top two trims. For most people this will be more practical than a smaller 5 seat EV. Once KIA gets the US tax credit these prices will fall in more favorable price points.

So many of you are saying, "if I'm paying upwards of 70 80K I could get a lower end Rivian or Tesla SUV" is just idiotic. That's clout chasing and focusing on prestige. Rivian could be out of business based on market valuation sentiment of the company. Tesla has poor build quality. Kia has a network of dealers, and is an actual vehicle company, not a startup. Now if the whole purpose is to get a brand name that's buzzing and for you to show you have money then go for it. Otherwise, statements as if KIA has to work its way up to brands like Rivian are a joke
@BeardedTeslaGuy
@BeardedTeslaGuy 4 месяца назад
Thats not at all "clout chasing" and if you really think Rivian is going anywhere, you are smoking something strong. The reason why people start bringing Tesla and Rivian into the conversation is because a KIA is being priced in that territory. It has to be able to compare and show some sort of value for the price. If you are spending 70-80k on an EV, there are cars out there that have substantially better tech than this Kia does...plain and simple.

3 things need to happen to make me bite on the EV9: 1. Price needs to come down so it's in line with the Telluride 2. Full $7500 tax credit needs to be available 3. NAS for access to Tesla Superchargers and destination chargers It ticks all the other boxes for me, but the above 3 items are critical.

Name an EV that had a comparable price to an ICE vehicle. You are looking at this from the wrong angle. The components of an EV are more expensive. So look past the base cost and look at the total cost of ownership.
@davidws5439
@davidws5439 5 месяцев назад
Actually would you STOP saying Actually even 5th word. Brandon Flasch does the same thing. It's very annoying. What's the difference between the seat folds down or Actually the seats fold down. The EV9 will be a great selling vehicle after it has the NACS connector as people that buy CCS1 vehicles now will have problems with lot's of options for V to G and other V to L options. CCS1 for North America vehicles is similar to buying a vcr over a blu-ray... and blu-rays are out too.

How is the most expensive, and 6 seat, EV9 start at a staggering price, yet is still less than the least expensive, 5 seat, Tesla Model X??? Your bias is obvious in that statement. There is nothing wrong with being a Tesla fan, but come on dude. The EV9 makes the Tesla Model Y look like a compact and the Model Y isn't the direct competitor for the Kia EV9.
@BeardedTeslaGuy
@BeardedTeslaGuy 5 месяцев назад
This does not perform anywhere near a base Model X in its highest priced configuration. It’s a great SUV to consider, with some minor drawbacks backs, and lack of tax credit eligibility makes the highest trim MORE expensive than the base Model X. I called out the Y for its size, even showed how tight it is. That said it’s the most popular car in the world, and has a 7 seat option. To not show the difference here would be dumb. This is significantly larger than Y, in the same size category as X, but is pricey. There is nothing wrong with saying that. The model X is also expensive

@@BeardedTeslaGuy I agree that the Model Y is the most popular car in the world for 2023. But the Kia EV9 compares to the larger Model X, Rivian R1S and Mercedes EQS SUV in class and size. So the. comparison to the Y makes no sense to me. I didn't mention performance because, lets be honest here. No one, looking for a real 7 seat SUV, is going to drive it like a race car. And the 7 seat Model Y isn't a practical car. You cannot comfortably sit an adult much taller than 5 feet in those rear seats. The EV9 is for someone who wants to take people and things on a trip.

Saw one in person the other day. It’s not “full size”, it’s a blown up kia Soul. The third row isn’t meant for any human with actual legs. If families are buying it to haul many kids, they need to remember kids grow way to fast and that third row will be useless pretty soon. That third row is no more usable than the Model Y. It’s a joke honestly and the prices are insane and then add 10k to 15k dealer markups, totally NOT worth the money. Of course no RU-vidr is going to tell the actual truth because they are here for the click and paycheck, every RU-vidr will talk about how wonderful it is! It’s yet again another foreign made vehicle, so yep, no full tax credit available for those who only plan to purchase to get that. Stick with AMERICAN made and support OUR economy rather than that of some foreign country.
