This is a great car, great seats and great cabin noise, more quiet than Model X, Model Y, Volvo V90, Nio ET5. Drive is very good. One thing that this car does right, there is physical buttons for what you need to most, climate, volume, lights etc and they are not haptic, great job! I do agree that the climate controls are somewhat hidden by the steering wheel. Cruise control is good. If you flip the back view mirror, it will show the camera instead. I prefer the regular mirror, but might be nice once you get used to it. I like that the dash shows the cameras if you indicate. I imagine wind noise is even lower without side view mirrors. Average sound noise was 59db, a record for me on the same 90-110km/h stretch. Winter tyres! I wish the steering wheel settings can go higher, lower and more out than it does. The kids and wife loved it. I think this will be the next.
10:48 The charging vs charging and connection switch makes so much sense. In cars with wireless apple carplay sometimes you connect your phone to charge but then it switches to cable connected carplay and then you get disconnected from carplay whenever you want to stop charging your phone. Cool solution from Kia!

I watched A LOT of videos for the EV9 and this is by far the most interesting one.Much more detail and many little things others left out. Amazing review!
Excellent review as always, Thomas! Would be interesting to see a follow-up review on the bidirectional charging capabilities, particularly how new EVs can power a house (during power outages or to maximize time of use pricing from the utility).
If I were looking to buy a large electric SUV, I'd buy this in an instant, and wouldn't consider Audi, BMW or Mercedes at all. The BMW and Mercedes cars are hideous to look at, and the Audi is full of dead animals. The EV9 is far more interesting, and Kia's approach to sustainability is light years ahead of the others. It also has lots of lovely buttons, even if the speed chime is buried in a menu somewhere. And then there's the price. Why pay that much more just for a badge? Another home run from Kia, and another fine review from Thomas.
It is possible to create a shortcut for turning off the speed warning. You can have it via the star button under the screen or the star button on the steering wheel
Hm, I tried and it did not offer any connection to turn off the speed limit. Kia officials also said there is no shortcut possible. Where do u have ur info from?
@@autogefuehl If you press the star button under the screen or on the steering wheel you can create a shortcut to different departments within the system. Then you can create a shortcut to the ADAS overview. then you just need to hit the star, choose the speed limit function and then turn it off. This function is the same in all Kias. I have it in my e-Soul for example.
Very good review thanks Thomas. I am so impressed how quickly Kia responds to the market and customer sentiment. Animal free interior, real buttons, comprehensive tech and unique styling. It's an impressive blend of convenience, practicality and value as well as looking absolutely unique. Amazing job by Kia.
I remember laughing at a old Kia Rio when I was young...would never have guessed something as impressive as this. Personally I would have made it more van-like as its more practical, but SUVs sell better for unknown reasons..
Exactly this, we got a new SUV recently. Mrs said MPV’s look dorky and she didn’t want a van / commercial vehicle. She likes the airy feeling provided by high roofed vehicles so that just left SUV’s. SUV’s are also a much more developed sector than MPV’s and van based people carriers. Every car manufacturer sells multiple SUV’s for all kinds of use, so along with more choice, there is more volume, with more potential for deals.
Really good review Thomas. I had a chance last week to test EV9 GT line. Few points to say. It's going even faster 0-100kmh..I would say 4.7sec Black metallic colour is nice and I am waiting to see red metallic in live Few things what is missing: - no massage seat for passenger side - no wireless connection android auto (software update will come soon) - still distance with 1 charging (km/miles) small - for sure there is a way to turn off these beeping sounds/warnings Overall: amazing price, quality really high level, no more glossy plastics (visible scratches)- few areas only, super smooth to drive, lane assistant works really good I am a user of Sorento model for the past 3y, amazing car, I am having great experience but only what is killing me is the glossy plastic inside. 😂
Really looking forward to the EV5 version of this, hopefully will just be a mini version of the EV9. I might be able to actually park a 4.6m vehicle on London streets! The EV9 at over 5m is too long for my liking.
Older American dude here. Really great review, as always. I appreciate your thorough anallaysis and sense of humor. I know it looks easy, (that's a sign of a pro in life, business-"and so on"), but it is work. Good job! And, no. Don't eat in my car. LOL
@@isimonsez Uh yes. Kia literally made a car called the Telluride for only the NA market. It is the same size as this, same shape, same sort of vertical boxy design. It is the same concept but in a more modern EV manner. In USA cars like these have been the norm and trend for a lot longer.
The flat floor is super attractive. 2318 liters, that's about what a long wheelbase R-Class offered? I'd love a modern R-Class with a modern drivetrain, be it a good gas, PHEV or EV. Could be made very aerodynamically with the EQ design language. More so than the EQS SUV even, I think.
Great review as always. Love the interior design, materials and tech of this vehicle. Shame about the looks on the outside, which are a bit on the loud side.
No air suspension, interior looks dated and cheap compared with a NIO EL8. Not a big fan of the screen design, steering wheel and material choices. Very practical car yes, but it falls short in a lot of other areas, especially considering it’s price. It’s pricing is comparable to luxury SUV’s but doesn’t come close in giving off that impression when you’re inside.
A great test as always. What a compelling package for the price. How do automated systems behave when coming up behind a cyclist or a group of them as in your driving sections?
Could elaborate more on comparison EV9 with Volvo EX90? You've mentioned it once, but mostly compared to three german brands, where the price difference is much larger. EV9 is still less expensive than Volvo, but the difference is not that high. Could you add some comment on that, what are the pros, what are the cons in your opinion?
There’s much I find impressive about this car. But I’m baffled by the comparison with premium brands. You get what you pay for - although of course prices have gone through the roof, relative pricing still makes this statement true. Those strange looking plastic lawn chair seats which only seem to come in the one ugly black and off-white combo, excellent trunk space but it looks like a bad lego build with all the enormous gaps and grooves everywhere. A volume button, yes, cool stuff, but why is it a tiny silver plastic wheel instead of something that really looks and feels like a volume button? Hey, it should not cost tens of thousands to do these things (and others, as mentioned in many other comments) better - but taken altogether the details drag this very promising offer down to the level of an unhappy compromise.
Hi perhaps not 100% apple to apple comparison, but which one to choose, KIA EV9 or XPENG G9? Do we dare to buy Chinese, will XPENG still exist in 10 years, is the quality as good as KIA?
Thanks for the review. I'm looking to change my Audi A6 Avant to an electric but: - Q8 e-tron is a bit old tech (slow loading, no 800V architecture,...) + cabin is the same as the A6. Drives great though but it lacks some user details like the KIA has USB-C everywhere and at the right place. - BMW iX: seems a bit to small (at least that is the impression you get from many reviewers) - Mercedes EQ isn't really my taste in design. - Tesla go to minimlastic to fast to my liking.... - Was hoping the Q6 would launch but it seems posponed...that doesn't give much confidence to actually have one before Q3-2024.... => this EV9 really looks like a great alternative. Never driven anything other then VW, Audi, BMW,... so first a test drive to see one for real. Other suggestions to consider?
I have Tesla model Y and I am fan of Audi so I am looking for Q8 etron but as you said I feel like I would end up buying a bit outdated car in terms of technology so Kia seems a bit more attractive to me (it’s here approx 50k usd cheaper than Q8 etron).
Great review. happy to see childseat friednly tilt for 2nd row passanger side seat. Real range should be in my opinion atfer calculating 10 - 90 % state of charge max, because so few drive below 10 and on fat charger You should not charge to the max. In my opinion, when VW solves software problems and put regular wheel in ID Buzz LWB - big family master. I also still have hopes for Volvo with upcoming EM 90 that will be offered as huge family oriented option - not only copy of zeekr 09.
Have any manuafactuers refered to their blue press cars as 'Thomas Blue' yet? 🤣 It looks like a giant Tonka toy and I love it :) Interesting that for something that is at the upper end of the Kia price range, there is no window frame cladding on the interior - I know I'm nitpicking here 🤣
I've watched 50 Kia Home 9 videos and they all talk about their own bullshit. We know that this vehicle is for large families, but in a world where attacks are increasing, what kind of security measures does the Kia brand offer us? How durable are door locks and car windows? Is there a GSM signal booster in the vehicle? Or why doesn't Kia have a central SOS help button?
im not sure if its present in this model but i HATE the fact Kia/Hyundai EVs cars beep at everything EXCEPT when lane-keep assist gives up control and doesn't notify while cruising on the highway.
It is possible to create a shortcut for the ADAS-systems. You can chose to have via the star-button under the infotainmentscreen or via the star-button on the steering wheel.
Thanks! I did try that since I know that function. I pressed it and the menu showed nothing related to that function or that overview. Kia told me that they were not allowed to implement such a shortcut even by this way. I found it strange because Mercedes and BMW do offer way easier shortcuts. Kia said that by the time they homologated the vehicle, even stricter rules were in place than with the other new cars. Not sure if that's the reason. ll recheck next time again in the menu one more time nevertheless, but as I said, we tried it with several people on location and no one could make it work. It could be that the menu in your e-Soul still offers more/different choices than now in the EV9. If anyone has an EV9 and found it in the menu, happy to post it here.
@@autogefuehl. I work with Kia and I have been driving three different EV9 the last week and all of them had the possibility to create a shortcut to the overview of the driver assist systems. The regulation for ISLA starts from July 2022 so all cars that is homologated after that needs to have the system. After July 2024 all cars are forced to have ISLA regardless of when they are homolgated. My e-Soul is a facelift which does have ISLA because it’s homologated after July 22. However, I had not the possibility to create a shortcut before I downloaded the latest software. Maybe the cars at the press event didn’t have the latest software.
Excellent review. Im a owner of the new Kia Sportage. Family had other Kia. Its amazing how far this brand has come. This is a stunning vehicle. On the other hand, a car so advanced and modern has still a wired android/apple carplay its ridiculous and believe it or would put me off buying another Kia. My Sportage is cabled. Finally, bear in mind that versions are different from country to country. If you are in Ireland, for instance, you'll pay the same money as in Germany but get way less optionals, which is very poor. Just saying. Otherwise a beautiful idea of car.
As a piece of design and a technology platform, its a bit of a sensation to be honest. In my area where the school run car is a big status symbol, I am expecting there to be loads very quickly. Yes, way too big but since when has that been really relevant to anything. Great review as always. And I think you are correct. For the large EV sector, this car has seriously reset the bar. By a mile
Koreans need to try harder. Europeans and Japanese have a history of making cars for over 100 years, but Koreans have only about 30 years. For Koreans to catch up to this 70-year gap, they will have to do what their competitors are not doing.
They're making high-quality, dependable and attractive cars nowadays, for prices that are equal to, or lower than their European competitors. How have they not caught up yet?
The speed limiter acces can be configured under the multimedia button. Press and hold the STAR button and select it to driving assistance quick set. In this case you actually just press 2 things to deactivate it. In many competitors you can not switch the system off while you are driving. Either you remember to deactivate it or on the move you must stop for deactivating it.
In my opinion that is one ugly car. But I do applaud Kia for being bold in its design choices and delivering better (not good) value than most other brands
I would buy it. Just because I had it with these German “premium” brands. The standard price is already high and then you pay “premium” for the options. This car is more than good. And it’s full options. Looks the business. With that price difference I’ll put a mean custom kit on it. Yeah. I would buy it.
Kia builds nice and efficient EV’s, but the availability sucks. I waited more than one year for an EV6, and in the end cancelled the order. Also the communication with Kia and the dealer was awfully….I went up to VP Sales Europe and completely ignored me. Went for Tesla and I don’t regret at all.
Kia/hyundai killing it, especially with their EVs. If it wasn’t for that 60k battery bill someone got for the ionic I honestly would have picked them over Tesla.
Having to set one pedal driving every time I start the car might be a deal breaker for me. Nissan lost me on the Ariya as they broke e-pedal. No way I go back to ICE driving feel after the e-pedal in my Leaf...
Electric cars gave replaced engine noise with recurrent high frequency Bip noises. In Paris, speed limit is know 30 km per hour but no one seems to respect it. Does the car car Bip all the time?
If you've always wanted a luxury vehicle from the Germans, buying German will only suffice. A fake leather bag or knockoff will always be that, a knockoff. Sure the knock can hold everything the real one can, can look just as good, but you'll always be reminded it's a knockoff.
Will Rician R1S make it to Europe? What will the entry level be like, compared to a loaded EV9? EV9 loses points on charging, 6 minutes lsower 10-80% than EV6. New battery tech, budget battery tech?
Can't wait for the Chinese to jump into this segment. I was really looking forward to EV9, but its a shame they all got so crazy with the pricing that 80k counts as cheap.
It might not be such as bad looking design if they'd get rid of the horrid piano black. Why is it that the car industry just won't trying to shove us thee horrific materials we all know won't last or wear well for very long. Just as many carmakers are beginning to remove it from the interior, now other are slathering it all over the outside of the where it will age even quicker. Imagine the dull look and scratches after a few trips through the car wash. Eve if personal owner did their own hand wash fleet renters certainly won't.
When I bought my Kia Stinger, I was told that I was mad to spend a bit over 60K on a Kia. This EV9 is double the price of a brand new Stinger and it's genuinely in the price range of BMW, Audi etc. I just can't imagine people spending that large amount of money on a Kia branded vehicle. The only brand that gets away with this is Toyota with their LandCruiser. But that model took decades to be established.
So the main reason (as in the majority), for which people buy cars is vanity. Now, with electric cars the gap between "premium" cars and mainstram has, in my view, dramatically narrowed. Interior built quality has significatnly decreased in the "premium" ones while the mainstram ones have increased it gradualy but not dramatically. Performace wise, the differences are even less noticeable if at all relevant. So what's letf is the battle between vanity and pragmatism. In my opinion, in Europe there will be extremely few people who can and will pay 80K for a Kia no matter how much sense it would actually make (from a pragmatical perspective of course).
Probably the same as other large powerful EV's: the drive is amazing, with lots of torque and a heavy vehicle towing the caravan. Range will be crap and charging a PITA, because the charging bays aren't made for combination vehicles, forcing you to decouple the caravan before each charge and couple it afterwards.
Thank god they found a better solution for the regular mirrors. On Ioniq 6 they left the plastic holders/back-plates of the digital mirrors inside and you ended up asking everytime "what is this car missing?"
That's 100 Wh, so 1000x less... Also, were you planning on putting your EV9 in the overhead luggage compartment, or dropping it off at the luggage belt?
