@@KevinLeeVlog Hello, I am a member of an association trying to restore traditional French martial arts. ( AAMF) Indeed, it is not only the savate but also the natural method (Hebertism) ancestor of the obstacle course which crossfit by removing the philosophical principles very oriented towards altruism. As well as our wrestling techniques, our practice of weapons (in addition to the cane, the stick has two ends, the dagger, the French sword, the saber, agricultural weapons, etc.) and the combat method of the last master who died a few years ago (Robert Laffont) which is a very fast, complete combat technique: panache. To this you can also add "military hand-to-hand combat", ancestors of close combat which was used during the First World War in the trenches. Your videos are excellent. you have clearly understood the footwork with the sole of the shoe which is at the heart of the technique (basically the peasants of northern France wore wooden shoes. this type of kick probably comes from there) On the other hand, your gestures are still “too sporty.” In savate we stand leaning back to protect ourselves from blows (the habit of boxers is to move forward but here the logic of cashing in is prohibited). the fist is rarely practiced because it is too dangerous and must constitute a transition between the distance of the foot and the fight (which itself includes wrestling blows: head, shoulder, elbow, knee) You are leaning too far forward which forces you to keep one of your arms in protection rather than using it as a balancer to amplify the movement. I encourage you to continue. Do not hesitate to come and discuss these questions with us (we will answer you in English) on our discord. discord.com/invite/nkNwePXu

In JKD, you don't see the kick coming, so you can't stop it if it's cultivated. In Savate, you may see the kick starting, but you have no idea where it's landing or what type of kick it will be; it may change in flight. Both concepts are great and can be intermixed. As someone once said Speed, force and deception. Super video.

JKD was partially inspired by it so that's pretty cool

Against an untrained/barely trained fighter, yeah definitely. But the more experienced fighters will see the telegraph from the Pendulum Step because the step comes before the Kick. Of course Bruce Lee trained it so much that he would be quick enough to potentially get away it.

Your guest really has a great understanding of what JKD is technique-wise. It stays true to the framework of techniques that Bruce implemented and used in JKD. Very refreshing to see. Most people nowadays think that JKD is just MMA where each person adds certain moves or changes things up. The reality is that JKD is a standalone combat system that is not meant to be changed or modified. Certainly not in street fight context - it will require slight modifications if you’re implementing it in a sporting context though. Great video!

Nice work, Kevin. You’re a great host. Promoting respectful exchange with other artists is far more interesting than artists being competitive or claiming their art is superior. Solid, informative and accessible content for the martial artist.Thank you for these videos.

Bruce didn't research other martial arts to incorporate their techniques in to JKD! His intention behind his research was to know the pros & cons of those martial arts & exploit their weaknesses.

Dude, he already is and has been for a very long time, look at his rankings on his website or Sifu Francis's. By the way Nate never trained with any lineage directly down from Bruce like Kevin did who trained and was certified black sash in Jun Fan JKD under guro Dan Inosanto. He's certified in Savant, Thai boxing under Ajarn Chai, black sash in Wing Chun under sifu Francis Fong and many other styles. Sorry about my spelling I'm dictating. ❤

Really interesting! Discussions like this are key. We might not know all the answers or reasons, but we explore this stuff and learn as we go. I keep reminding myself that Bruce Lee pulled from so many styles without the many resources and extensive information sharing we have now. He had some legendary teachers, that's for sure! Lee, along with many of the martial arts greats of his time, noticed flaws or weaknesses in certain arts and systems. I think we could sometimes benefit from doing this too. I know some of my traditional arts have weak points, but you can't mention it haha. We only tend to see weaknesses in the other styles, not the ones we do. Lee was so skilled at seeing those flaws and then filling the gaps, modifying and merging. It worked tremendously well. I am watching a lot of his movies now as part of a MA movie advent challenge, so so good. Kevin, I like your approach of learning from all styles and individuals, looking for commonality and embracing the differences. Thank you and well done.

Due respect Sifu and thanks for the great analysis from both of you. And I know you're hosting but let's face it you know more about Bruce Lee's kicking philosophy w/ Sifu Fong ( via Dan ) than anybody except the first generation such as your other teacher Guro Dan Inosanto. ( As u know, Bruces best friend and who trained the most with him compared to anyone; even Sifu Taky rip.) Direct lineage does mean something still.... even today.

Love JKD, when I became a basic instructor in the late 90's I was already a amateur boxing champion and I remember we'd train Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings. Other days all the instructors trained in BJJ, Boxing, Mauy Thai, and other arts. We'd all share and make things better. I fought in MMA and we had a few guys that made it to early UFC and KOTC.

The differences are subtle, but the similarities are quite profound. Footwork, range, timing, I personally like the stop kicks from Savate and the intercepting techniques From Jeet Kune Do. Savate's swing hook, Chasse italian and Spinning hook kick are fun tools to use when sparring also. As far as arts are concerned, it feel like JKD and Savate are cousins 😅. Awesome Video!

Kevin, you just keep amazing and impressing me, not only with your knowledge and skill, but those you also bring on your program. So, I had to stop training early october, fell down my "landlords perfect cellar stairs" and got a full thickness tear of my supraspinatus and tears to bicep of my left shoulder, and I am a southpaw. Dr suggests operation, both orthoscopic and then opening to repair tears. Says with PT six months should be good as new. Every one I've talked to whose had surgery with this Dr says he does great work. He knows I'm into martial arts. What kind of strength training would you suggest for my shoulder after surgery, healing and their PT?

Savate uses lighter kicks because it was actually meant to be used for self defense, with hard shoes (so no need to hit hard to make damage).

lol…Kevin you are very kind. With the pendulum footwork the rear foot moves first. Go ahead and try moving the lead leg first and let me know how that goes. Your guest does not understand the motion he is using…classic. He is moving his weight forward first, not his lead leg. Some of his Jeet Tek advice is kinda wack, but whatever. Your guest does not have a deep understanding.

What are good shoes for Savate? I'm thinking if I got one size bigger and stuff the front with a sock to add padding, it could be ideal. My only issue with kicking with shoes is the soles will wear out kick especially when doing Roundhouse kick.
