KickBoxer (1989) First Time Watching Movie Reaction 

I miss films like this. Crazy that no matter how old this film is, it is still entertaining to watch over and over again.

Universal Soldier is another good Van Damme movie.

Everyone knows Blood sport is a classic but for me it Was Kickboxer that played non stop in my house. JCVD and Stan Bush just ruled my world for those few years. Still luv this movie and know it word for word. also yes Kickboxer and Bloodsport were the main influences on Street fighter and Mortal Kombat : D

Although not a JCVD movie, a great martial arts movie that many people don't know about or react to is called The Best Of The Best. It's a "tournament" style movie and stars James Earl Jones as the coach and a young Eric Roberts way before his career blew up and became famous.

Next stop with Jean-Claude Van Damme might be... Lionheart (1990) ? 😉 You'd for sure enjoy it big time, the same way you enjoyed Bloodsport and Kickboxer... These are movies from the same era of JCVD's career, with this good energy that we oh so love so much ! ✨✨ Btw, I was thinking... Another Van Damme classic that's a must-see (alongside Bloodsport and Kickboxer) is definitely Lionheart. It has the same quality to it, and has this very nice emotional aspect to it also... 👍 Two movies that also come to my mind are : • Time Cop, which came a lil later and is one of Van Damme's biggest successes ; cool movie with some very cool bits and all the ingredients from the mid-90s. • In Hell, which is a more recent (2003) movie of his, but definitely an underrated one ! It has this heart-breaking type of pitch and journey to rise again... It's gritty and really really good as a movie. PS: Also, if you want two pure fun pop-corn movies... Double Team is crazy fun ! And perhaps also Knock Off... Both have these over-the-top quality to them ; the first one takin' itself more seriously but you have your espionnage-adventure type of movie, and the second one is all out high pace cop story with cheese. 😋

As a kid I always thought it was weird that the movie is called, "Kickboxer" when it showcases, Muay Thai. This was my first introduction to Muay Thai, and I instantly fell in love with the art. Out of all the stand up arts, it's one of the most practical and effective. I was a big kickboxing fan in the late 80's early 90's. Dennis Alexio, who played Van Damm's brother in the movie, was one of my favorites. He was on the cover of, Inside Karate, in '87, I wanted that magazine so bad but my parents didn't want to pay $2.50🤣😂

Hi. If you like martial arts movies I recommend another good movie with Van Damme: "Timecop" (1994). And then... how not to mention the Prince of this genre, Jackie Chan: "Rumble In The Bronx" (1995), "Mr. Nice Guy" (1997) and "Who Am I?" (1998). Stay and watch the movie even after the end because in all (or almost all) movies with Jackie Chan in the post-credit there are images of bloopers, injuries and funny scenes. Speaking instead of the King, Bruce Lee, I recommend a biopic: "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" (1993) and, even if it's not a martial arts movie (but it's still worth seeing, in case you haven't still done), the movie based on James O'Barr's comic "The Crow" (1994) is very good, where Bruce Lee's son (Brandon) lost his life on the set (in the last week of filming). At the end of the movie we read the dedication to Brandon and Eliza, his fiancée with whom he was supposed to marry at the end of filming.

Kickboxer is one of my favorite movies from Van dam. I've studied martial growing up myself I started off studying Tae kwon then i moved on to Kickboxing then in High school I studied Jeet kune and wing Chung. Now later on I'm about to study Ninpo Taijutsu

Van Damme's Sudden Death 1995 is fantastic, more action focussed than martial arts. Along with this I'd say Hard Target 1993 is a must see because of its slick Hong Kong direction.

"Lionheart" is another very good one from the same years, and "In Hell" is a more recent one that's really really good (and sadly not known enough)... 👍👍👍

I have engaged in hand to hand combat with people of different styles and have been successful,, not because my Art is better but because I was better.

I was a Blue Belt in Kick Boxing. The Guy who played Tong Po was actually in Blood Sport he wins in the first fight, then gets his leg broke by Bolo later on. My stepdad told me when he use to work at a hotel in Puerto Rico he met Jean Claude Van Damme and the nights he was staying at the hotel he was always drunk when he would check in for the night.

I remember being blown away when i realized that the guy (michel qissi) who played Tong Po was also the dude in the first fight in Bloodsport who suffered a bad loss to Chong Li also Van Dammes pursuer in Lionheart. 😮

Hello from Ontario Canada I am 44 I grew up in the 80s watching martial arts movies such Kickboxer , Bloodsport , Segal movies ( etc ) I took Brazilian Jiu jitisu and boxing as a kid in the 80s plus in high school I played football I currently got back into Martial Arts this time Aikido I had no Idea how much I missed it .

My sister. I am impressed by your martial arts background. I started in karate when I was 5 years old. Didn’t stay too long because the sensei was too busy trying to impress my mother than teaching the students. A decade later I took up Chinese Kickboxing with a 10-2 record in the tournaments. After that, I transitioned to Taekwondo and Aikido. I finally finished in Wing Chun Kung Fu under Grandmaster Ip Man’s student, William Cheung. I am a Level 9 Instructor. I have not taught for a year because of the Covid scare by people. Now that things are returning to normal, perhaps I can reestablish the classes with my students. I love teaching women and children because predators see them as easy victims. I teach an initial 6 week self defense course before any Wing Chun because katas never help against an attack. It’s good to see that you have taken the steps to protect yourself. Thumbs up 👍🏽 to you!

I don't know if u noticed but the man that played tong po is in bloodsport when Chong Li stepped on his leg and his skin is damaged. That's him.

Fun fact... JCVD and Michel Qissi (actor who played Tong Po) actually grey up together in Belgium and had a love of martial arts and action movies. They moved to US together to get into Hollywood and were roommates while they were trying to jump-start their acting careers.

JCVD is my childhood favourite marital arts hero he is legit and real fighter and has had a great fighting career as well may be less people knew it. Jean-Claude retired from martial arts in 1982, following a knockout over Nedjad Gharbi in Brussels,Belgium. Jean-Claude posted a 18-1 (18 knockouts) Kickboxing record, and a Semi-Contact record of 41-4 He has more verifiable full contact ring experience than Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee combined. He was 44-4 in “light contact” karate competition. This is the type of fighting that Norris did. He was 19-1 in real, full contact kickboxing. Neither Norris or Lee ever tried full contact. Van Damme has more verifiable martial arts skills than almost any action star you can name.

Bloodsport put him on map , but it was kickboxer that made him a star in my opinion. With iconic dance sequence. My best friend use to do that dance move for movie every time we go out to club, always made me laugh. It good movie, i like to watch from time to time

Have you seen the movie The last dragon? It's what I'd call a martial arts/fantasy/comedy/love story. It's from 1985, so it's got a little eighties cheesiness and a lot of wild Michael Jackson break dancing type fashion. You might like it👍

Again, all those fight video games were inspired in Jcvd movies. Amazing that his most influential movies had small budgets and the ones he did with the big studios are pretty much forgotten.

Somehow this popped up on my home page. I loved this reaction, checked through your playlist and immediately subbed. I'll be checking out some of your old reactions. BTW I found it funny that the very second you busted the director for Eric's belt being in one piece, I saw Eric move his feet when Taylor shut the van door. I've seen this movie 5 times and never noticed either. To me those little hic ups make most movies even better.

Dennis Alexiou was an amazing kickboxer in his prime.

The kicking of the palm tree or something hard is to harden the bone through much damage and it repairs to be harder. 👍🏾

Fun Fact....Tong Po his real name is Mohamed Qissi originally is North African from Oujda in Morocco he was a legit Kickboxer and Boxer Jean Claude's Sparring Partner in real life.

Jean Claude's brother in this is a real life badass Kickboxer named Dennis Alexio with 68 wins and only 1 or 2 losses, 63 KO's. Back in the day they had something like two styles of kickboxing (from what I understand), 1 with leg kicks and 1 without and Alexio couldn't handle leg kicks. Don the Dragon beat him because he had great leg kicks.

The guy who plays as JCVD´s brother is Dennis Alexio. He was a very succesful pro kickboxer. He got his leg broken in a fight in 1992. A lot of his real fights can be seen on RU-vid. His story out of the ring is even crazier. He and his wife are basically scammers and commited several tax frauds, He was sentenced to 15 years of prison 4 years ago if i remember correctly.

Cyborg, Hard Target and Double Impact are good movies with JCVD. The Quest was pretty good if you liked Bloodsport.

This was the first martial arts movie I bought, then after seeing it, started buying all of Jean-Claude van Damme's movies, then other martial arts movies, that lead to Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, then there was more recent martial arts movies after this like... Best of the Best, with Eric Roberts and Philip Rhee, then Best of the Best 2, Bloodsport and many more action movies, had a collection of over 250 at one time, then gave them all away when I moved house lol

Reembok, you should watch the series Highlander the Series. The movie was awesome too, but I like the series even more. It's about the cousin of the guy in the movie, Duncan MacLeod, who is also from the highlands of Scotland is also immortal!! The only way an immortal can die is if you cut off their head, so there's lots of awesome martial arts and sword fights in the movie. He learns kenjitsu and original jujitsu from one of the actual Samurai in feudal Japan (he's that old). Then he travels through China and learns various forms of Kung Fu. The series is about him running into immortals form his past, some of who were evil. For example they had a couple of immortals who were Nazis in WWII. There's a lot of thought provoking episodes, like in "Timeless", he knows this world famous (in the fictional show) pianist who is VERY BEAUTIFUL and he can feel that she will be immortal if she gets shot or otherwise dies a violent death, but he protected her since childhood because he didn't want to choose when her mortal life ended. But his friend, also an immortal, has always been into stage performances (he used to do shakespeare in the 1700s) so he ends up shooting her to activate her immortality so she can be a good pianist for thousands of years. MacLeod wants to teach her kenjitsu and Jujitsu and Kung Fu......but she doesn't want to because it turns out, she looses her ability to play the piano like could before if she is immortal, she has to know she could die any time! She ends up running away from MacLeod. There's a group of mortals called Watchers who have kept track of the immortals through the centuries, and one of them is MacLeod's friend so he tells him to keep an eye on her. Presumably MacLeod will come help her if she is challenged by an immortal. Such a good show! 🙂

There are four more movies after this - Kickboxer 2: The Road Back, Kickboxer 3: The Art of War, Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor and The Redemption: Kickboxer 5. 2,3, and 4 stars Sasha Mitchell as their younger brother David Sloan. David is killed in Kickboxer 5 and his friend Matt Reeves (played by Mark Dacascos) avenges his death. They came out with reboot series - Kickboxer: Vengeance (has a similar premise to this one) and Kickboxer: Retaliation. Van Damme comes back as a character named Master Durand who trains Eric and Kurt. There is supposed to be a third called Kickboxer: Armageddon. I have seen the original many times but I like Kickboxer 2 and 3 better and have seen them more. Kickboxer 4 is okay but I've only seen it a few times mostly because I have the DVD set. Kickboxer 5 is pretty good but that may be because I am a fan of Mark Dacascos. I haven't seen the reboots yet but I will at some point.

some people who do muaythai will say it's blasphemy to declare that the thais invented kickboxing 😂🤣😆😂 While modern K-1 does get it's knee strikes and clinch (albeit an abbreviated clinch) from muaythai, kickboxers predominantly transition from karate or start with kickboxing (without the elbows, dumps, catch and sweep, and extended clinch of muaythai) which makes more use of the boxing and long kicks, which are thrown from further away than elbows, whereas elbows can cause a lot of cutting damage at close range. MMA fighters who come from a kickboxing background are able to put on a stand up clinic against fighters who are predominantly wrestlers once they can avoid getting taken down and/or pressed against the fence, and the way they do that is with their long weapons and fighting on the outside, whereas the main difference-makers between kickboxing and muaythai happen within a wrestlers range where he is more effective, and so a muaythai fighter who is predominantly a clincher (if that's his particular muay thai style) will play right into a wrestler's game, whereas a kickboxer or a muaythai fighter who is used to fighting at range is harder for a wrestler to deal with

about 14 minutes in training is not full contact in real life, especially in thailand because there they fight every other weekend so gym wars are pointless, better to save your damage for the fight. Hard sparring makes more sense to challenge what you already know, whereas light sparring is where you learn. occassional hard sparring is good if you're a non-fighter, but fighters shouldn't do it often, saving their damage for the fights

Kempo, some Taekwondo, pressure points, anatomy, personal Jeet Kune Do, and any technique to improve self defense.

There's a big misconception that Muay Thai/Thai boxing and kickboxing are the same thing. They're not. They're similar and share a similar origin, but 'kickboxing' has different rules. The IFAA and sanctioned leagues in the west that do kickboxing have a lot different rules. Fun fact: Eric the Eliminator is an actual professional kickboxer. He's not a Thai boxer. I do love this movie, but Van Damme doesn't ever really use kickboxing or Thai boxing. It's mostly karate, with some Hollywood style to sell it. But I still think it's awesome, and young me thought it was awesomer, and inspiring! As someone else said, you should check out Ong Bak. Possibly to Thai boxing movie I've seen, and what Enter the Dragon is to Kung Fu. In my opinion, not as good of a movie overall, but the skills are real, and the main protagonist Tony Jaa shows some amazing feats of what the human body is capable of.
