Lifting a lot isn't powerlifting 🙄 it's just being strong.

@bigguy7353

@@jacobsvetich8735 You assume way too much. Squatting being part of powerlifting doesn't mean it's only for powerlifting. No one thinks it didn't exist. And you don't need to compete to powerlift. If you do a squat for under 5 reps, congratulations, you just powerlifted. Power equals work over time. More work in less time is power training. You do it regardless of what words you use or if you want to compete or not.
@bigguy7353
@bigguy7353 Год назад
@Natty Fatty Modern powerlifting is, because young people are looking for the next shortcut for some reason. Go to an old school powerlifting gym and you won't see ridiculous arches and insanely wide grips for bench, bars halfway down the back for squats, or sumo deadlifts.
@bigguy7353
@bigguy7353 Год назад
No, it's clearly defined. Whether you like it or not, it's a fact that power equals work over time. High weight and 2-5 reps is powerlifting. You don't get a choice. Just sayin'.

For the first guy, if he isn't running a powerlifter gym, the barbells may not be rated for that level of weight. He was very respectful, so maybe he is concerned about equipment. I was roommates with a nationally ranked heavyweight powerlifter, and he told me bar strength is the main reason he had his own. Because at 700lbs (what he squatted), you can't be sure a typical commercial bar with hold. Was kind of eye opening.
@Rufgaudas
@Rufgaudas Год назад
Exactly, a good powerlifting bar is much more expensive than an usual one in commercial gym. If you are opening a simple commercial gym for a simple non-powerlifting people - there is no need to invest into very expensive equipment. And owner did apologize for not stating at the beginning that it is not powerlifting gym. It was handled very respectfully. We've seen cases were crazy owners would interrupt people in mid-reps and risk injuring a person.

Ok then, why don't you enlighten us what the weight limits are for different insurance companies... "You policy remains effective as long as your patron does not exceed a 315lb squat.." You dunce... that's like saying your car insurance is only valid for accidents under 35 mph.... if you crash on a highway with 55mph posted, you receive no coverage. Dude... wow. This is purely just discrimination against a high level athlete because of his abilities. My question to the owner would be "what weight on the squat rack is no longer considered "powerlifting"?" The answer is, there is no answer because there is no weight that marks the entrance to the realm of powerlifting. Each person is different.... once could feasibly be powerlifting with a 135lb squat if that is their capability.
@pumpkin9916
@pumpkin9916 Год назад
@@SP-qo1so Lot of built up anger, huh? There are many different insurance coverages that a gym needs. Staff, equipment, injury, loss of wage etc. I'm not an expert on this, I'm simply telling you that the owner wasn't comfortable dealing with an injury from a guy squatting over 500 pounds. Someone squatting 135 is far different than a solo lifter with no spotter lifting extremely heavy. The owner is liable for equipment breaking, people getting hurt, etc, and kindly asked him to leave. There are private gyms designed for more elite lifters (ie strongman gyms, bodybuilding gyms etc). This guys been a gym owner for 25 years, so whatever his reason for being uncomfortable with a solo 500 pound squat was is going to be more reasonable than a youtube white knight screaming "if theres plates he can lift whatever he wants!" Relax man
@SP-qo1so
@SP-qo1so Год назад
@@pumpkin9916 Argument from authority fallacy... just because this guy has been a gym owner for however long doesn't mean his viewpoint is more reasonable. And you can't even remain consistent... as you said, there are many different kinds of insurance coverages that a gym needs.. staff, equipment, injury, etc etc. Then you immediately turn around and state that the owner is liable for equipment breaking and people getting hurt... If the owner is liable, then why do gyms have contracts for people to sign stating we use the facility at our own risk? If an owner is going to be liable, what is the point of getting all the insurance you just mentioned? Weights are meant to be lifted. Nobody including yourself can answer the question "At what weight would this patron's lift become acceptable?" Try to answer it. Seriously..

That gym owner I'm guessing skimps out on his insurance to save money, so he tells the people lifting the 'big dangerous weights' to go somewhere else. Less risk of injury in his gym and less risk on him.
@David-lu4th
@David-lu4th Год назад
Hey if he skimps out on insurance, have people sign a waiver that they take their own risks by working out, if they get injured the gym or employees and owner are not liable. That would make sense to me, and if he's worried about the equipment breaking, instead of kicking the guy out he could've told him "hey brother you're so strong, we don't have people like you around here often, I'm worried the equipment will break because its not up to these strength standards" at least he was cordial and respectful I guess

You're correct. But the one thing is we don't live in a world of infinite choice. There might be only 3 gyms within easy commute distance of the customer's house. 1 might be this gym. 1 might be women only. and 1 might be relatively unsavory. So I totally agree that a private business can set whatever limits they like. But the fact remains that this is a hassle for the customer, and what the customer wanted out of a gym was not really that out of spec.

I think that gym handled it amazingly. They offered the dude a refund to go somewhere else and I imagine that outside of the recording they also said he can stay but just can't lift above a certain limit that could bend the bars. Commercial gym bars are not the same quality as professional power-lifting bars. They CAN and DO permanently bend past the 500-600lbs range. At the end of the day a gym is a business trying to make money. They have the right to refuse service to anyone that just isn't worth having as a customer. Yes, he is not actively trying to break anything, but the risk is just not worth it. Imagine you were the owner and each time a genetic freak like this came in you'd run a good risk of losing $100 for a new bar. Simply not worth and I don't think anyone is in the wrong in this case. If I was the guy that shit would have made my day. I'd just go to a different gym knowing that I was literally too strong for a commercial gym.
