Side kick, imo is one of those simple but reliable kicks. It can be launched fairly quickly, can be easily feinted or cancelled outright, and can be used in multiple ranges (besides grappling range I guess, although you could still try to use it to push for distance). But that's coming from someone who wasn't exactly taught properly, so.... grain of salt?

Hi sensei, are the first few kicks warm up kicks or that is how they actually do front kick; with no bending of legs? Also when kicking, what's the difference in results if my standing foot is flat compared to "tip toe". As for my favourite kick, it is front kick same reason as karin first motion can be used as front kick or quickly shift to a roundhouse, or sidekick.

Sanshou is normal chinese fighting (application of Kung Fu) and Sanda is sport fighting or sport kung fu. Also, the hammer kicks in the beginning are for dynamic stretching lol.

I've always wanted to learn Sanshou. While they rely so much on flexibility, they also maintain effective sparring strategies. And also, this is my first time noticing that your shins have marks. Sensei, I'd really appreciate it if you would share the shin strength training.

When I studied TKD, we did chamber exercises aiming for the knee, abdomen, chest and head. For kicking the inner thigh, I practiced a quick skip forward on the outside of a rear stance kick to tap the opponent's inner thigh with the top of my foot from a small angle from behind them, with the intention(if it a real fight) of using the momentum of my body moving to deliver the strike.

I love the duck walk exercise. Prior to my Kyokushin Karate, I was practicing Praying Mantis wah lum Kung Fu for almost a year and a half and we did just that along with the mae keage exercise with your foot straight up without bending the knees. Love your videos and will subscribe. Keep up the good work KDW!!

Your background is very interesting to me. I practiced Wado-Ryu Karate for 10 years, I've had a break for a while now, I wanted to get back to martial arts. Out of curiously I wanted to try Kung Fu style and I had a trial class in praying mantis Kung Fu (actually it was more a sanda class for that day). I'm also very unrested in Kyokushin. I did few classes too. How would you compare praying mantis and Kyokushin in terms of fighting applications? I'd love to read your feedback, thank you in advance
@NYKgjl10
@NYKgjl10 3 года назад
To me, from my Karate teacher, we do fighting applications from bunkai self protection, deep understanding on techniques kihons to sparring techniques to no end and I feel that Its more applicable than Wah lum kung fu as they concentrate more on the aerobics, stances, e.t.c...But then again, thats my experience. Every MA teacher is different.

Great to see you exploring and trying out Sanshou! Only thing I found was this is definitely not a beginner friendly class even though you have Karate experience. Especially the catching round house kick exercise, i can see that its an awkward movement. I feel the teacher could use more beginner friendly drills as some of these drills are more for intermediate/advanced levels

I remember the Chinese gentlemen's way doing mawashi geri and kekomi geri was taught 30 years ago at JKA Chicago. The emphasis was on the mawashi with the heel higher than toes and kicking 'downhill' with strong hip pull-back/flick-back. I always assumed this was approved by Mr. Nakayama and Mr. Nishiyama. It is probably a good rule to not assume! I do like the team warm up exercise of rotating the hip and driving forward - nice.

Both the roundhouse and side kick chambering is similar if not the same as Taekwondo. It differs in the last step only, where in Taekwondo we usually don't hold the pivot for fluidity and easier launch of subsequent kicks. Here, they hold for balance, I guess.
@iComeInPeace8
@iComeInPeace8 3 года назад
I'm not sure if you know this already but for the warm-up kicks, try using your lower abdomen (basically your pelvis) to thrust your legs up. You'll generate power without over working your groin and hip flexors. You can also use this with other kicks as well. I really enjoy your insights into the techniques!

I don't understand using just a foot in roundhouse kick for example Its not generating force that we need to hurt our oponent its good in front kick or side kick but in roundhouse kick or low kick we need to use tibia (my opinion)

:-D Having fun training is the most important. I trust a teacher like him :-) 7:00 side kick balance, what i hear you say are water element balance. Water Centre are where Energy flows free in any directions. Means Tai chi use this force a lot in basic all movements. When you balance are like floating and not rebalance in slow kicks, you know the feeling. :-) Air Element balance are for free movement, also known as in Teakwondo. (The way they move in light movement). Air element movement are good for a lot of power build, like Bruce Lee, whit out it he will not be able to be that fast.

Sanda is basically Muay Thai with the Chinese knowledge of Kung Fu. So there is no Sanda schools near me but I spent years learning Kung Fu so now I take Muay Thai and many techniques are also done in Muay Thai but more for combat than for sport. Muay Thai is mostly sport now but you become deadly because they condition your chins, fists and elbows for fighting.

Sanda's kicks are heavily influenced by Taekwondo. Sanda is the best Chinese Martial Art, and the irony is that it's basically a blend of Western Boxing, Taekwondo, and wrestling, with some Shuaijiao takedowns in the mix. Shuaijiao might be a good martial art for you to check out. I've been in the Chinese Martial Arts for over 20 years, and Sanda and Shuaijiao are the ones I recommend.

@CrossingFist
@CrossingFist 3 года назад
@@ysmma8627 In the beginning Sanda drew from Choy Li Fut, Wing Chun, Long Fist, and Shuaijiao. But if you look at the fixed, modern Sanda curriculum, it really is derived mainly from boxing, wrestling, and Taekwondo. It’s why Sanda practitioners have much better sidekicks, roundkicks, and spinning back kicks than traditional CMA guys. And yes, I know that all of those techniques exist in CMA.
@tjl4688

@@CrossingFist Side kicks are a big part of Choy Li Fut.
@CrossingFist
@CrossingFist 3 года назад
@@tjl4688 Yeah, I know. I did 3 1/2 years of Choy Li Fut. But modern Sanda throws Taekwondo side kicks and roundkicks. It has a very fixed curriculum. The best Sanda fighters in China come out of the Physical Culture University system, and all of the Universities are teaching an identical Sanda curriculum to their teams. And that curriculum uses kicks primarily derived from Taekwondo, with some Muay Thai influence. That’s why they throw a lot of rear leg sidekicks, which is big in Taekwondo. Ramsey Dewey did a video on his time training with the Sanda teams at a few universities. He said most of them were also training in traditional martial arts, and he said the most popular traditional arts they cross trained in were Muay Thai and Taekwondo, though he also came across Sanda teams that trained in Kyokushin and Taijiquan.
