Episode 82: Kidney Disease Cure or Repair - What is Possible. Each day I'm asked if you can cure CKD, restore kidneys, repair kidney damage, or reverse kidney failure. Many people hear of my success in improving my health, they see my labs improving, and they assume there is a cure for CKD (chronic kidney disease). Top that with websites selling tablets with exotic ingredients that promise to completely restore your kidney function - it’s easy to see why people wonder if you can cure kidney disease and reverse kidney damage.
Let’s start with some groundwork
• I am a kidney patient. I was diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney failure and told I had no chance of getting better and I needed dialysis.
• As you can see, I’m a super nerd and I pretty much science the heck out of possible alternatives to dialysis. I NEVER went on dialysis.
• I worked closely with my entire health care team - of which a key player was renal dietitians.
• Today, 1.5 years later, I am Stage 3 and have NO symptoms.
• Are my kidneys less damaged today than when I collapsed outside the ER with kidney failure? NO - they are just as damaged. There is currently no way to repair the physical damage to your kidneys. The damage I have will be with me for the rest of my life.
Now some may be confused - my kidneys are just as damaged today with a GFR of 33 as they were with a GFR of 8 - how is that possible? GFR Does NOT measure kidney damage. It measures how well your kidneys are removing waste products, most commonly creatinine, from your bloodstream.
There is currently NO WAY to cure or repair the physical damage to your kidneys. The scar tissue, the damaged nephrons (the filters), and any other damage cannot be undone, cured, or restored. With current medical science, THERE IS NO CURE.
I know - you want there to be one - so do I. And yes, I’ve read thousands of articles about results from different small studies showing some potential in improving kidney health. But none of them repair the physical damage. Not even the fake hacks like baking soda kidney repair.
So how is my GFR so much higher and my symptoms all gone in just a year and a half? This is where you CAN make a difference. I have made simple lifestyle changes, I learned about nutrition from professionals, I based my diet on my labs. In short - I am putting less burden on my kidneys, which allows them to better keep up with me. I’m giving my body the sodium it needs, but not too much. I’m giving it the potassium it needs, but not too much. I’m doing this for all the nutrients that matter. It sounds hard, but it isn’t when you work with a renal dietitian.
Can you improve your labs this way? Most likely - but we are all different. I had to make lifestyle changes to manage my underlying cause of kidney disease and prevent further damage to my kidneys. I would say there is also some luck involved. But the key takeaway is that while you CAN NOT cure kidney disease (and nobody on the plant has a cure - believe ME), you may be able to slow down or stop the progression. And with a little luck, you can also improve your labs and better manage or even eliminate symptoms.
So, when you see someone offering a kidney cure, kidney restore, kidney fix, kidney what-ever, pass. Even if they claim their brother was given a special tea to drink and their kidneys healed back to perfect health - it’s not true. Spend your time managing your underlying condition and learning about nutrition and health. Then work with your health care team and don’t let kidney disease hold you back! You can not cure CKD naturally or otherwise using any pills, supplements, teas, or herbs.

Good explanation! Always remember that my husband's grandmother had 15% kidney function, was about to be put on dialysis, and she changed her way of eating (ate more vegetables, drank ONLY water or water with lemon, and the only meat she ate was fish). She reversed her CKD from stage 5 to nothing! She now has "no kidney disease"!

I too was given the diagnosis of CKD 3 I went into overdrive and like you I researched everything. I went total vegan. Even making my own almond milk and bread. Eating nothing with a face. In a year I brought my GFR 18 points up, Ct scan showed no additional damage. My doctor had no faith in me. I felt totally alone and I knew dialysis was not a choice I could live with. I’m still going strong and I never cheat. Your advice is spot on and I hope people will listen. It is a life changing choice. 🙏

Changing your diet makes a big difference I've been in stage three for about 6 years 3B to be exactly GFR number always fluctuates between 41 and 46 but you're right I watch that sodium ninety-nine percent of the stuff I eat his vegetables and fruit very small portions of meat every once in awhile.. I always drink enough water I used to be a coffee here at 3 or 4 coffee a day now I wake up I might drink 2 oz black maybe twice a week the rest of the time nothing but water juice I drink I'm making from fruits all natural none of that bottle juice cuz that's only sugar water 67 years old and I'm trying to make it to 68 .. but in the last 10 years I really realize how important my kidneys were and all the damage I did to my body eating and drinking the wrong stuff thanks again for all your positive information cuz we are all brothers and sisters on this team to beat kidney disease .

Thank you for this honest video! Reminder to all CKD patients to make sure you are on an ace inhibitor (usually ends in the letters -pril) OR angiotensin receptor blocker (usually ends in the letters -sartan) if your doctor thinks you can tolerate it. It will slow down the chronic worsening of CKD, loss of GFR and lower the amount of protein that spills into your urine through your damaged nephrons causing even more damage. Even if your doctor is worried about a slightly high potassium level 4.5-5.5, I would advise eliminating dietary potassium sources as much as possible and continuing these drug because the benefits far outweigh the risks of a mildly elevated potassium level. Over 5.5 potassium might be a different situation which may warrant stopping these types of medications.

Hello, I was wondering if you experienced itching at stage 5? And if so, did you have any kind of skin irritation (rash) or not? Thank you.
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 года назад
I had itching - and pretty much every other symptom there is. The itching was caused by too much phosphorus which pulls calcium from my bones and deposits it along the skin, causing bumps that itched like no tomorrow. My legs looked awful from all the scratching all night long. It only took a few days to go away once I learned to eat far less phosphorus. Your doctor can check your labs to see if you have too much of anything (like phosphorus) and then a renal dietitian can help you adjust your diet.

James, you have been an amazing inspiration to me!! I found out June 30 as I researched my labs online that I had Stage 3a kidney disease. Three days of researching everything I could read online amidst terror and tears. Experiencing many symptoms led me to a doctor for a referral for blood work. My creatinine is 1.04 and my egfr is 54, which doesn't seem too bad, but my symptoms seemed to have debilitated me. Extreme nausea accompanied by intense headaches and dizziness. The nausea seemed to be almost constant but intensified after I ate a meal. Dizziness, fatigue, etc. Then I discovered you on RU-vid! I think I watched almost every episode you recorded. I also emailed your dietician Jen, to sign up for the next class. I have made a complete change in my diet but I am still experiencing symptoms., sometimes they seem to subside and other times it feels as if I have new symptoms. I feel lousy almost all the time. I purchased probiotics, vitamin D, omega 3, COQ10, and vitamin b. Thank you so much for all your study and research to help us kidney warriors. I completely agree with you and your dietician, food is medicine, it heals . How long did it take for your symptoms to subside? Thank you from Kathy "A Kidney Warrior"
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 года назад
Thank you for your support Kathy! You are extremely lucky to discover your kidney issues so early - this will make it much easier for you to make changes (like you are doing) to try and slow down, or even stop the decline in kidney function. A renal dietitian like Jen is going to be so helpful - those days of terror will be long forgotten (and we all go through that). In total, my symptoms probably took me about 7-8 months to get all of them under control to where they were barely noticeable. Around a year I was completely symptom-free. My diet played the biggest role in addressing gaps in my nutrition - and all of my symptoms could be traced back to something wrong with my diet. Keep up the great job you're doing and I am so glad you are here in our community!

There are so many different variables with Kidney Disease and each person truly is unique. The treatment strategy I follow is to #1 Manage the underlying cause to stop additional damage #2 Give my body the nutrients it needs (and not too much) #3 Be active. This is something we all should be doing as best as we can, and the results will be different for each person. Some forms of kidney damage can not be fully managed, so this approach may only slow down the decline in kidney function. Working with a renal dietitian and your health care team with the goal of slowing down or stopping the loss of kidney function will give you the best chance at making a positive impact in your health.
@RHt09

It depends on several factors including the degree of inflammation (seen on biopsy), how much protein is in the urine and the current filtration rate of your kidney. That’s why you have to work closely with a nephrologist to determine which combination of steroids, ace inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers or high dose fish oil they’d recommend for your specific situation. IgA nephropathy is a rare disease that is different from kidney disease from diabetes or high blood pressure. It is treated differently.

Dadvice TV- Kidney Health Coach, are you saying, that it's not possible to naturally repair the kidney with baking soda?
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 3 года назад
that is correct. Sodium Bicarbonate can not repair physical damage to your kidneys. Sodium Bicarbonate can be used to substitutes low bicarbonate (usually below 22 on your labs) and has been shown to slow down the progression of CKD in some patients. Your doctor will let you know if taking it would be helpful for you - be careful to never self prescribe, it can cause other problems if your body doesn't need it.

Hi James. Awesome video as always! Sorry haven’t been keeping up. You look fabulous btw. When you were in stage 5, did you ever feel nausea? Also, (apologies if I’ve missed this)wondered if you could do a video on sodium levels and how to maintain them on a low sodium diet. Prayers, hope and light 🤲
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 года назад
Thanks for the support! I did have severe nausea - I couldn't keep anything down for long, including water. I dropped a lot of weight over about 2 weeks leading up to my admittance to the ICU due to not eating anything. I have a video about sodium which you may find helpful - its ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KrfLxI9aFWA.html Are you currently working with a renal dietitian? They would be able to help in getting the right amount of sodium in your diet. A renal dietitian has been the most helpful part of my improvement.

Dadvice TV - Kidney Health Coach our dietitian isn’t all that involved and she’s largely inaccessible. So we’re referring to google and inspirational people like yourself who come from a real place. Seems you suffered the full spectrum of symptoms from breathlessness vomiting nausea to fatigue and oedema. And here you are to tell the tale! God bless you, James. Keep going!

What are right foods to eat wen one has kidney triuble
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 3 года назад
It comes down to balance - there are no set foods that are "good" for the kidneys, but some foods (in the right portions) are less stressful for the kidneys. I have a number of videos talking about many of those, along with portions. The portion is key - and it is based on YOUR labs and health. Even if you have the same GFR as me at the moment, and all of our labs look the same, I happen to be on a high potassium diet which is RARE for CKD patients....due to a health issue I have were my body can't keep potassium. So be careful following someone elses diet - it is best to get with a renal dietitian a few times to get your diet worked out. I do have a food list to help you get started while waiting to meet with a renal dietitian - you can download it (free of course) at www.dadvicetv.com/grocery-shopping-kidney-disease

Hi James, my name is Eko from Jakarta Indonesia. My creatinine level is 270 .... i do not have any sympton but of course i'm trying to maintain healthy life style and drink some med on daily basis...I just found out about renadyl a month ago from your video... i've been consuming it for about 2 weeks now... does it really work on you? Do you still consuming it?
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 года назад
Renadyl worked great for me - but it is important to use it as part of a treatment plan that includes a renal diet based on your labs. Some people add it to their current daily regiment and see positive results, but it needs to be part of your overall strategy. Gut health plays an important role in our overall health and I continue to use Renadyl each day. At times I've become more comfortable with the progress I've made and I let my diet slip - which is something I'm still working on. With your level of creatinine you need to be sticking closely to your renal diet and making certain you have your blood pressure, blood sugar, and the underlying cause of your kidney damage all managed.

As I learnd, nephrons gonna re generate everytime when they damaged just like other cells, but we need to create the environment to sustain the newly born nephron cells through diet, there is no accurate way to measure the kidney damage everything is just based on creatinine.
@RHt09
@RHt09 4 года назад
This is false. He’s telling you in this video that the nephrons do NOT regenerate every time. In some cases if they are damaged due to certain harmful drugs, dehydration or low blood pressure, contrast used during a medical procedure, chemotherapy, etc they can improve. These are short-term damage that is done in a short period of time. If you’ve had years of chronic damage from diabetes or high blood pressure, it’s likely they’re not going to improve and the nephrons are sclerosed or scarred/dead.

Please how to reverse kidney disease what type of diet and supplement advice its very important.
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 2 года назад
The diet needs to be individualized by a renal dietitian. Your health care team will also determine if you need any supplements. Taking supplements without needing them can DAMAGE your kidneys more - so only get recommendations from your very own health care team.

The physical damage is permanent, but there are things you can do to reduce the burden placed on your kidneys, which can improve your overall health and your kidney function.

I have a transplant, and did amazing. But I wonder about my kidneys, cause my damage was caused due to renal dysplasia, a genetic Kidney disorder. If the transplant fails, I hope I could at least get a week and not see dialysis, cause I was never did. I was just 17 years old. But I did look at my diet from young.
