My father was prediabetic, had a history of kidney stones and had stents in his heart. Each of his three Drs gave him a list of foods that he should eat and a list of foods that he shouldn't eat. After cross referencing the lists he came to the conclusion that he could eat eat lettuce three times per week and drink water and anything else would probably kill him. 15 years later, after making up his own diet that is basically everything in moderation, he will be having his 85th birthday next week.

Amazingly I was in ICU 4 times in 3 months. I NEVER saw a dietician or nutitionist. My nephrologist, I’ve fired three, has NEVER discussed my speaking with a dietitian. Im at stage 4 ckd with renal cardio syndrome as well. Had I not done my own research online I would STILL be hurting my condition. People EDUCATE YOURSELF. DOCTORS DONT GIVE US THE HELP WE NEED!!! BELIEVE IT! Your advice is spot on!

Thank you so much for your great comments! It is heartbreaking to me to see so many people in the same exact situation - not getting enough information or support from their doctors. Just yesterday I was chatting with a person who just discovered she has CKD with a GFR of 9 - her doctor knew when here GFR was 49 and never told her. She didn't get a chance to make the lifestyle changes and now faces dialysis. We are our best advocate and information is our power. Thanks again!

This is so sad! I have begged for a referral for a renal dietician...no direction from nephrologist re: dietary concerns....I have to ask for my lab report AFTER my appointment-take it home to develop my line of questioning...doing my own research...being a diabetic with CKD results in opposing dietary needs...make all my meals-no restaurant/fast food items, fresh fruits and vegetables, plant-based foods, organics, little to no animal protein, IF, water/lemon infused water, unsweetened tea, no sugar....when nephrologist gave me a keto handout, I tried it BUT it skewed lab results in the wrong directions

Thank you for your work and dedication ! I am a 25 yr old male who lives in california and about a month ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 CKD, my eGFR value is at 18 and I consider myself relatively healthy. I am 135 pounds with an athletic build and I work a full time job where I get average 10k steps a day if not sometimes double that five times a week. My doctor told me that I am not diabetic and my blood pressure is normal, everything else is pretty much normal as well expect for my eGFR value. I do have to admit that I neglected drinking water a lot in my youth and could easily drink soda or juice all day every day. However I have also been vegetarian for the better part of 12 years and have never had any problems with my health growing up. I also admit that I did not go to the doctor for almost 13+ years as well and the reason why I decided to go was because i was having random episodes where i would throw up really bad and get an overwhelming sense of deja vu and DPDR. After 3 years of dealing with these random episodes on and off I decided to go to the doctor and like you said, they were shocked at my result but they pretty much said that there was no cure and that I just had to limit my amount of salt until i got to stage 5. My doctor is also the head of his field in nephrology and pretty much told me that I was going to reach stage 5 and that there was nothing I could do about it and that my only options were to get dialysis, a transplant or live untreated until i die…. i’m only 25 years old and I don’t have children, I live on my own with my girlfriend and i’m honestly just scared that there is nothing I can do… However upon feeling these emotions i’ve found your channel and just felt called to share my story and reach out. I will be having a biopsy soon because the doctors still don’t know what’s causing this kidney problem, they’ve done ultrasounds and they didn’t find any cancer so it’s honestly just very confusing and scary… I’m just glad I found your videos now and THANK YOU SOOO MUCH !!!

@@nouraali4206 hello first of all THANK YOU. not sure if anyone would even read my comment but a kidney biopsy was performed on me back in december and the doctors diagnosed me with C3 GLOMERULONEPHRITIS (C3GN) and said that my disease has no cure and that they do not know the cause of my condition. since being diagnosed i have been drinking nothing but water and staying super healthy and meal prepping all my meals following a renal diet. my condition has not progressed but i was put on the transplant list by having my mom opt to be a living donor for me. the doctors still stand by the same thing they told me at first that i have no other option but to wait until i reach stage 5 and go into transplant or dialysis. it’s been very hard to accept especially because of my age and because i am so healthy but i am doing a lot better now. part of is kind of unsure about the healthcare system in america, it makes me question if different countries or walks of life would have a different perspective on what’s happening to me ? the doctors here just seemed really unsure about my condition and don’t even know what’s causing it so it has been all very confusing

Good advice! I'm a dietetic intern starting my Renal rotation this week. The first things I check are GFR, Creatinine, BUN, Na, K, and P. Ive been getting 2 patients a day and I usually spend a few hours studying my I individual patients before I talk to them. I know the actual RDs have 20+ patients a day so they can probably get pretty generic with their handouts. Good things for me to know!

Everything you said is so true, my dietitians told me most of these you mentioned. I have only one kidney, had cancer tumor in one and thy removed it. But one year later my criatines where high and was told my kidney is not functionally 100% I was devastated. And had to immediately change the way I eat. You explained well on the different stages so I am on stage 2 according to your counts. You have reminded me to take it easy on beef. It’s better other proteins. And also dairy products. I see my dr. Every 6 months, and do blood and urine tests every time also. I am stable Praise God and like you cheering is not the way to go . As I calculate everything I eat. I've recently been diagnosed with stage 4 CKD and have not yet seen a dietician. I'm asked to be referred but heard nothing. When I look on various sites on the internet, even the official ones, they conflict one another especially with proteins and the calcium vs phosphorous challenge. I'm a vegetarian, have been since I was 9 years old - I'm in my 50's now. I read on some sites to avoid lentils and most beans, other sites say they are excellent sources or protein and fibre which we all know and encourage them but with no limits. I'm struggling but your video is amazingly helpful. I'm so glad I discovered your channel. Huge thank you!!!

What you are finding is exactly what everyone finds - new and old info, conflicting recommendations, and the big Kidney sites seem to all push dialysis and transplant instead of diet and lifestyle changes. Check out my more recent videos with renal Dietitian Jen Hernandez - and then do what every you can to work with a renal dietitian. They ARE the super heros when it comes to finding kidney disease. I can't stress that enough. Once you have a good renal dietitian, everything becomes so much easier and less complicated. Here is a great starting place, including links to find renal dietitians: www.dadvicetv.com/rdc

@@DADVICETV Thanks so much for your response James. I actually started to watch the first 40 minutes of your video with Jen titled 'Plant Based Diet For Kidney Disease, Common Mistakes To Avoid & Tips For Better Health. I can't tell you how relieved I feel after listening to Jen's advice, her wealth of knowledge is just what we need. My GFR was at 25, dropped from 80. I've been stage 3 CKD since 2011 caused by diuretics for cardiomyopathy and ended up on emergency dialysis after a heart transplant in 2014. They told me back then that my kidneys will improve but I will need dialysis within a couple of years. Although my nephrology team are supportive, it's like you say, the only way is dialysis and transplant. In less than 6 weeks I've managed to get my GFR up from 25 to 47 and urea and phosphorous levels are greatly improved. Creatinine remains an issue but I am determined to preserve my kidneys and live a life without dialysis for as long as I possibly can. Your enthusiasm and presentation is fantastic and your videos are so informative. Your channel is a God send.

I've been watching your videos now for the last two weeks and everyday you share great content that is really really helping me deal with my kidney disease. I recently spent one full week in the hospital dealing with this issue I gained over 30 lb of water on my weight. And I have been struggling trying to figure out how I can get myself back to normal. Device that you shared along with the medication that the doctors have been giving me have been a life changer I want to thank you so much for these videos as they are giving me a guide. I thought it I was eating healthy by drinking orange juice and eating spinach in my salads and in my eggs The dietitian never told me that I shouldn't be eating so much potassium. These small changes that I've made thus far in by eating has translated into incredible outcome for me thank you so much for these videos

So glad you are improving! With the water gain, I had a very similar situation. When my kidneys failed I swelled up so quickly - I cut all additional sodium out of my diet and kept to 1500mg a day. It took a few weeks, but I was able to remove most of the water weight (and fit into my shoes again). No surprise here with your doctor or dietitian not warning you of high potassium foods. The day after getting out of the hospital I went to my Primary Care Physician (PCP) and he pretty much gave me the first GOOD advice. He went over high potassium foods to avoid (bananas, avocados, oranges, etc.), how to shop and avoid excess Phosphorous, best foods for me to stick with during Stage 5 (non-GMO, Organic, make all my meals at home, etc.). He has been the one to help me put together the strategy to get better - my Nephrologist (and all the other "ologist") have just been there to make sure everything is on track, to make sure I'm not missing something, and that there are no other issues (no cancer, etc.). A local deli here has a mom working who has a son with Kidney Disease - she has been helpful when I purchase foods made at the deli to make sure they only have Kidney Friendly ingredients. I also had a local baker who made preservative free low sodium bread for me (I'm now on a extremely low carb diet and don't eat bread). There are so many people around us who can help - most of which your Kidney specialist or dietitian would not think recommend. Keep reaching out and increasing your network of support - it will help you continue to improve and overcome the challenges Kidney Disease throws at us.

Welcome aboard! I started this as a diary about my journey - my doctor recommended it and told me I would get better and want to write a book one day. I got better (and continue to improve), but I'm not a good writer. I do have an outstanding talking-gene so I continue to make videos as I improve and learn more. This is one of my oldest videos - so make sure and see how far I've come in my latest videos (you may be shocked). I also do a LIVE broadcast with a renal dietitian every Tuesday at 6pm EDT. It has tons of info and we take questions from the live chat! Anytime you see me recommend a product it is because I use it and believe in it - not because I want to make 25 cents hocking something. Always check with your doctor before changing your treatment strategy - and you'll see how I change as I progress. There is no 1 solution for everyone, but there is a strategy focused on your health which has worked for so many. The #1 thing you can do to help yourself is to work with a renal dietitian - they are the super heros in fighting kidney disease. Glad you are here and hope to see you in some of the live shows! Always feel free to ask questions - we have an amazing community focused on living with CKD that helps support each other.

Check out the interviews I do with renal dietitian Jen Hernandez and Jess Saville - lots of great info there. I have discovered that the dietitians in the hospital don't get enough time to prepare for patients, so they only provide the minimal amount of info and it's not specific to the patient. Working with a renal dietitian OUTSIDE the hospital is where the individualized and helpful info comes from.

As a diabetic for 25 years, I would have to go to a dietician every couple of years. I dreaded it because they would harp on the same thing (serving size), but not give real suggestions on meal planning. Before they always felt some pain My energy is a lot higher too - if you watch my latest videos you can see it right away. One thing which really helps me with energy is 1 cup of coffee for breakfast (I now only eat lunch and dinner) with a little bit of MCT oil in it. It is known as "Bulletproof Coffee" and can help with weight loss. Just be careful with the MCT oil - it give you energy but also makes a quick path to your lower intestine, so take your time getting used to is and stay near a restroom when you first start using it. You can learn about MCT oil here on RU-vid and always check with your doc before adding it to your diet. Good luck - you can do it!!

Eat/ snack on celery every day will conquer the water retention problem. Water from the tap is NOT without additives. MUST use a filter. Your doctor has had 3-4 hours of nutrition classes during six years of medical training ! DIET practitioners have less. See a nutritionist who doesn’t focus on you going on a *diet* to lose weight. Eat vege picked from your own garden. Eat eggs (whole protein) from your own chickens roaming free in your backyard. Never go to the supermarket. Buy produce from farmers market. Eat only food in season. Never eat red meat. No. Cheat Days, just one will destroy all your effort.. drink juice within 15min of juicing. After that, oxygen has caused oxidation which will harm body. If having problem eating bulk vege, put some in blender and drink it. For sweetness, use a few lumps of fig or pineapple is ok.

Another thing people often overlook (there are so many things, but this is one I see a lot in the Midwest) is to be aware if you use a water softener. Just 2 quarts of softened water adds 160mg - 240mg of sodium to your body, which is 10% or more of your daily limit. I'm drinking at least 4 quarts a day, so that could quickly add up to 30% of my daily salt limit (1500mg).

Here is a link to a food list you can enjoy while on your kidney diet (non-dialysis): www.dadvicetv.com/grocery-shopping-kidney-disease - it makes it so much easier to eat for your kidneys and still find lots of variety!

Hi. I've been trying to find a renal dietitian for the past three weeks now but not finding any. I'm finding "dietitian", and when I called a couple and asked if they were renal dietitians they said that they weren't specifically renal dietitians, but can suggest diets for kidneys. That may be good, but I guess I'm looking for specialists in renal diets. Do you think that these dietitians are good enough, or should I continue to look for "renal dietitians"? And does anyone know of any links to renal dietitians in the NYC area?

Just an FYI, I just found out recently that if you have kidney disease, or if you have clotting issues, you may want be cautious about drinking celery juice. Some of my friends swear by drinking 16 ounces every morning, and tried to get me to try it... I checked... A 16 ounce glass of celery juice contains 670 mg of potassium and 99% of the daily requirement for vitamin K. Eating celery is fine but juicing? Yikes!
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 года назад
Very good point!!! It is easy to get lulled into having a lot of something when we know a little is good (or not bad) - but sometimes more is not good. Juicing removes the fiber which helps manage spikes in blood sugar - this is another challenge when juicing high sugar foods.

Great videos. I'm going through the process of being investigated for CKD. It's been a horrible shock but I am determined to fight this every step of the way. I noticed when it comes to plant based protein you seem lean towards non-soy. Can I ask why this is, thanks.
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 года назад
Great question and good that you picked that up. For most people soy is perfectly fine and it can even help reduce inflammation. For me though, Soy causes inflammation which reduces my kidney function and increases protein leakage. I wish RU-vid had a method to go back and edit videos - I never clarified that. The challenge is knowing which camp you fall in - is soy helpful for you, or is it harmful. The best way is with a urine test - get a baseline test done, then eat soy free for a week, get a new test done, then add soy to your diet for a week and get a third test done. Look at protein leakage - if it went down the week without soy and up the week with soy, you fall into my camp and should avoid soy. If it went down the week without soy, but returned to the baseline the week with soy, you may have a little reaction to soy and should limit or avoid it. The hardest part of this type of testing is all of the test. Most doctors don't want to request that many test, and your insurance isn't going to be happy with you either. Over the years I've had to pay for a lot of my lab work fully out of pocket just to get it done so I could have answers.

Popcorn makes a great snack. I purchased a microwave popcorn bowl and pop my own kernels. It cost a lot less and I can then add my own flavoring. I love adding some cinnamon or other flavorful spices. Here is the popper I use: amzn.to/31EKnUv and I buy my kernels in bulk. Popcorn comes out great every time and the bowl is easy to clean.

Dadvice - You & Everyone really need to do your homework about Organic Foods. FYI: Did you know that the majority of pesticides on conventional foods can be washed off. BUT ON ORGAINIC FOODS, they use some seriously toxic chemicals that "can't" be washed off. Also, when organic foods show up at the food inspectors station, almost 1/2 the crop is so highly toxic from the "so called organic substances" that they use for pest control, that the entire crop has to be BURNED NOT BURIED as it's not safe to put back into the soil to feed it. Don't read the parroted misinformation on websites. Contact you local government food inspectors and ask them what department looks after inspecting produce to determine the toxic levels of the pest control substances on the produce, before they allow the crop to pass safety level inspections. Speak directly to a supervisor of that department and not some inexperienced front line worker.

What are the supplements you use?
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 года назад
I use a number of supplements - and all for a specific reason and with my doctors recommendation. I take D3 daily and a large weekly dose (the large dose amount changes based on my labs), CoQ10 since I need to protect my heart, ProRenal+D with Omega 3 to help with the key vitamins us Kidney warriors need and the Omega 3 again for my heart, the renal probiotic Renadyl to help my gut health and reduce how much of the nitrogenous waste gets absorbed into my blood stream, a B Complex to keep my energy up and anemia away, vitamin C because my doctor says so and it helps with the B vitamins getting absorbed, and Alpha Lipoic Acid for inflammation (it and low inflammation diet stopped my protein leakage). That is is right now - and each of those supplements is taken for a reason. The amount and some additional ones where recommended by my doctor as my labs were worse. You should also check out this video with renal dietitian Jen Hernandez and I about supplements: www.dadvicetv.com/common-supplements Always make sure your doctor is ok with any supplements you take, and just at importantly, there needs to be a REASON to take them. "James takes them" isn't a good reason :-) Having Anemia IS a good reason to take a B-complex and Iron if your doctor recommends it. I also made it a habit to take labs before taking something and then again in 30/60/or 90 days to see exactly what it did and if it helped. If something isn't helping, I cut it. Good luck!

When I was diagnosed at Stage 5 I discovered I had CKD due to my kidneys failing and causing me to have a heart attack. The first dietitian I saw was no help - she wasn't able to show me A diet to follow, she had conflicting information for my Heart and CKD. Download my Food List from www.dadvicetv.com/grocery-shopping-kidney-disease - it is what I eat to get healthy and has been vetted by multiple doctors and dietitians. I noted the foods to be careful eating for diabetes. This may help make finding foods that fit your situation much easier! Good Luck!!!
