In this video, I talk about how my kidney stent/ureteral stent was removed after my kidney transplant. I take you through what happened during the procedure and how it felt at each stage.
First, I give details about what exactly is a kidney/ureteral stent and why it's used after a kidney transplant.
I then show some pictures and videos highlighting what happens during the procedure so you can gain an understanding of what happens on the day.
Finally, I talk about how it felt when it was removed and if I was in any pain during and after the procedure.
Hope you enjoy 😊

Just got my stent pulled out less than an hour ago. Had to come back to this video to drop a comment. I can reassure you guys that are worrying about it, that it’ll be okay. It does hurt and is uncomfortable but it only lasts for about 15-30 seconds. Completely tolerable. If you’ve suffered from kidney stone pain this is no where near as bad! Feels great once your stent is finally out too! Whoever’s reading this, don’t be anxious. You’ll feel so much better as soon as it’s over.

Just got my stent removed today & to be honest it’s not that painful at all. Mostly uncomfortable but easy to tolerate. What helped me was that they put lidocaine gel inside my uretheral and waited 10 mins before the procedure actually started. The doctor came in and he right away got the scope and sticked it in, I felt nothing until it passed the prostate it was a bit uncomfortable. Once in my bladder already he grabbed the stent and pulled it and didn’t feel nothing whatsoever. 2 out of 10 pain I tell you that.

Had my stent removed yesterday. I was freaking out the whole weekend thinking it was going to be a bad day in hell for me. After the procedure was done i realized that I grew a few extra strains of grey hair for nothing. The pain is tolerable. About an hour from the stent being removed that's when some type of pain kicked in. Not to scare anyone but i was in horrible pain. Felt like someone was chewing on my kidney. Had to take a pain killer to knock me out . Next day I felt free and pain free. Good luck to anyone else going through this. Dont make a big deal out of it. Worth it

Got mines take out yesterday after having it in for 3 months. After looking up so many videos on it, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be BUT let me tell you, when they grab that stent and pull it out relief was the last thing I felt... mind you, I have HIGH pain tolerance but It burned like heck!! Another reason it hurt me so bad is because I had a stent in me that wasn’t supposed to be there. Was way too big but nonetheless I’m happy to have my life back 😭 I forgot how it felt to be normal.

So I had mine removed an hour ago (the one withOUT the string). If you're reading this, stay calm, it's almost painless. The doctor applied some numbing gel 10 seconds before starting, I really feared the moment they inserted the probe, but believe me, I didn't even feel it. I felt some discomfort when it arrived at the prostate part, but it was not pain, just discomfort. They inserted some water in the bladder (they told me, cause I didn't feel anything) then they grabbed it and pulled it out. Not gonna lie: when the ring part entered the urethra from inside, touching the prostate, it was a little bit bad, not totally painful, but bad (Same as pulling out a catheter, if you know the feeling). It was over as soon as the stent's ring passed that trait. The rest of the stent being pulled out was TOTALLY painless, they told me they finished cause I didn't feel anything. 30 seconds in total. After cleaning myself I peed some blood and it stung a little bit, but nothing exceptional. I don't feel anything at the kidney for now, I'll update if anything worse happens. Just stay calm, it's 100 times better than you think. Stay strong.

Everyone is different. I believe you had awful pain. Living with a stent was horrible. Getting it out (no string) was even worse because one is awake. I had a kidney stone removed on Monday and I removed my stent on Friday at home. Today is Sunday. I will not lie, after having time thinking about removing my stent. I was not looking forward to it, especially that anytime the string was moved I felt a bit of pain. I did not take any painkillers after the kidney stone removal. So when Friday came along, I took the pain medicine 1 hour prior to me removing it. It hurt removing it, but not that bad. I thought this is not bad at all, 6 hour later I realized the pain medicine was doing wonders. Once it wore off I felt pain in my kidneys and when urinating. The left over blood clots coming out did hurt. My advice is use the pain medication and take the dose again, do not let it wear off. You will be fine the next day.

2019 - just had my stent removed in an outpatient procedure and I wanted to let others know it was not as bad as I had anticipated it would be. It went very fast for me (about a minute )and only a quick (15 second) weird feeling as the stent was pulled out. They gave me lidocaine to numb the urethra as much as possible beforehand. Uhbsorb I know it is a bit more problematic but I’m telling you from my own experience it may be perhaps a few seconds longer they do use a topical anesthetic and it does help. Try not to stress too much if you can help it. I also too pain meds beforehand to help be more relaxed and help with the pain. I dont know if you’re in the US but maybe ask your doctor for the appropriate pain meds for you beforehand. Ask for enough for that day and perhaps a few extra days. I was prescribed tramadol and I made sure I had someone drive me. Never take pain meds without a rx unless it’s over the counter but Ibuprofen I learned is not good for surgery it can cause more bleeding than usual. So I took acetaminophen and tramadol 50mg. We have to do it and once it’s out you will feel so much better to have it all behind you. Remember it’s very fast probably 30 seconds to 2 minutes tops but I doubt it will be that long. Try not to worry and just think let’s get this over with. It’s about as long as getting a blood test. Well in my experience anyhow. Good luck and hang in there👍

You're completely correct. Like I said in the video I definitely worked myself up more than I should have. Yes try not to stress it was definitely less scary than I thought it would be. I had a trainee nurse do mine so she took a little longer finding the stent but even so I managed to record the screen and ask them what they were doing. Hope all goes well mate 🤞🏽
@doartichaut9031
@doartichaut9031 5 лет назад
Transplant Fitness oh no! If I had heard that a trainee was to be performing the procedure I would definitely make a fuss and request they train with someone else. I had a catheter put in once when it wasn’t necessary and then they asked if a nurse could come in to watch basically as they were starting to do it, I was saying I didn’t understand why they needed to do this and asked to speak to doctor, she said it was “ doctors orders” and ignored me which really made me angry.Then into the room stepped not one nurse but about 6-7 students watching me have a catheter inserted. I was in hospital and grieving after a miscarriage and felt violated they didn’t explain any of it beforehand. Maybe the laws or rules have changed since then but in the hospital I had all three procedures for kidney stones were a completely different experience and they explained everything and talked to me and even had me sign that I was aware of what the procedure was. I hope where you are they make sure you are fully informed and treat you gently and sensitively. I’m sorry for all you’ve gone through I don’t have kidney disease or issues but my uncle has it and I’ve seen all it entails with dialysis and know it isn’t easy. I hope you recover and can get back to enjoying life to the fullest. God bless you and yours 💖

I am absolutely struggling with stent, burning, blood when passing water, frequent trips required and lack of control. Honestly driving me nuts. I should be in work 2 days a week despite covid and can't go in also which is not good as I really enjoy being in work. Mentally this is draining me, I find it helps when I lie down or sit down, if standing up it is much worse. Today a month after stent was placed inside I have been in agony and mentally drained. I have had antibiotics and control tablets but don't find them to work. I have tried chasing up for removal a few times but due to Covid not got anywhere which I understand but my issues experienced myself are driving me insane. Hope its removed fast! Stay Safe everyone.

Had mine removed this week. I was so happy to get it out - it hurt a lot having it in there. Coming out, very similar, except I'm a woman, so maybe it hurt less. They had me put my heels together and drop my knees out. They cleaned all the bits with something that was VERY COLD! Then the surgeon injected some lidocaine. That felt weird and slightly uncomfortable, and burned a little. They cover you up while they wait a few min for the lidocaine to work. The rest was exactly as you described. He went in with the camera, I could watch on the screen. He found the stent, sprayed some water in, told me to take a deep breath, and pulled it out. Weirdest feeling in the world, but also relief. Nurse wiped all the bits clean with a warm cloth. Flashbacks to being a baby and having a diaper change!! Then it burned a little for about 30 min. There was a little blood in my urine after but not much. Pretty much back to normal an hour or so later. Having the stent in me was much much worse than the procedure to get it removed.

Well. I had it removed this week and let me tell you…I worried for nothing. My doctor told me that women usually respond better to the removal than men but I wasn’t sure. Relaxing is the best way to ensure a smooth removal. When it came time to remove, I said a quick prayer and relaxed. Push your hips down into the table, take deep breaths and it is out! No pain whatsoever. 🙏

Cystoscopy experience varies from patient to patient. Obviously for men due to anatomical differences, it can be much more painful. For many, if not most, it can be excruciating. Had 125 years ago and it was like torture and has left me with a type of PTSD, medical trauma. so when I found out, I had one two days after a kidney transplant. I hit the ceiling. Fortunately, I eventually found the urologist who would remove it under general anesthesia.

In the operation report he stated he used a 7.5 mm cystoscope.... and that it is the smallest size with an additional tooling-tunnel. There is a kids' version as well but he told me it's too short. So for my removal I will be in TIVA again. 😉

Removing a stent with a string by yourself is a lot easier than going into the clinic and having it removed. I've had both. The one with the string is removed by just a steady pull until it is out entirely. The one without a string requires going into the hospital or clinic and having a urology team literally digging around in your privates.

Oh my god.. watching this gave me PTSD. I had Lithotripsy done for a 10cm kidney stone and two 8cm deeper in the same kidney. When it came time to take the kidney stent out, I had a UTI from passing all the dust shards from the surgery on top of the little tiny rocks cutting up the canal inside my urethra when passing them. I kept telling them about it before they pulled mine out but they insisted it's normal.. So when they inserted the tube it felt like they were using razorblades to retrieve the stent... and it took 3 doctors and an hour and a half for them to eventually find it.. I would have rather pissed out the 10 cm kidney stone than experience that pain again. It took literally all of my willpower to not writhe and scream in agony. Imagine shoving a 2150°F razorblade that's ~40 cm long inside your urethra on top of lubing it up with Hydrofluoric acid and you'll have some idea of how painful of an experience it was. They gave me a mild tranquilizer after about 30 minutes in for conscious sedation but I'll tell you, it didn't do shit. The needle literally felt like sunshine and rainbows in comparison.

It's EXTREMELY uncomfortable. For me, also extremely painful to an unimaginable degree.. bite down on something & breathe. Also it seems utterly impossible, but try to relax your urethra when they go in with the camera. The last thing you want is to clench up and have the doctor grab the head, pull it taught and forcibly JAM the camera in there... good luck! Good luck getting your stent out! My wife just removed my stent at home, which I preferred to an outpatient appointment. I took a full dose of zapain in advance, and drank tons of water to make my pee less acidic. My experience is the same as the poster - the main pain was in the urethra not the kidney, ureter or bladder. That surprised me as I was prepared for terrible pain in my ureter. The pain in the urethra was more like a burn really. The pain I had when my stone entered my ureter was easily a 10 (and I've had two prolapsed discs and chronic sciatica - all a 9). The removal of the stent was a 1 or 2. For me it was psychological and I'm delighted it's out!

The few top comments saying that this was easy going, well it was. Until, at least for me, I started getting bladder spasms. The spasms didn’t start until about 15 minutes after the stent removal. And they lasted for about 4 hours and it was just as painful as the damn kidney stone I had. Worse pain of my life! I’m on day 3 and I’m still dealing with spasming, but it’s letting up a little. Just make sure to ask for anti-spasm meds and some good pain meds just in case. Although what really has been helping is a heating pad and just laying down and taking deep calming breaths. That’s just my story.

I had my stent removed on Wednesday 12th and it was really painful, I suspect the 'numbing gel' was really just lubrication as there was no time between inserting the gel and inserting the Cystoscope. The hospital were great and the surgical team very professional but there is surely no way in this day and age that you should have to put up with the pain I felt. The procedure didn't take long but the pain was intense, I could feel the Cystoscope go right into my bladder and then back out again and no amount of deep breathing helped with the pain. Maybe I have narrow tubes or something as other people have had no more than mild discomfort but heaven forbid I get another kidney stone and have to have another stent but I'll certainly be asking for a sedative or even a general when I get it removed.
