Whoa, really?? Can I email you about it? My dog just recently got diagnosed and I'm doing everything I can to figure out what my dog needs to recover. Appreciate your time
Chicken breast skinless boiled 60% protein, venison or any liver boiled 10%,butternut squash 25% steamed cauliflower 10%,chopped up.Other ingredients are egg and ground eggshell 1/2 teaspoon ground eggshell powder per 1 pound of meat protein (eggshell is a phosphorus binder very important )blueberries,1 teaspoon honey which is a phosphate binder, fresh herbs like oregano
Discovered your account only few days ago during search for kidney failure in dogs and started to watch your videos. My dog was diagnosed few weeks ago and stopped eating everything even her favourite treats . Renal vets food and my own easy recipes she loved😢This morning I purchased your two books( one by accident as I was rushing to cook breakfast for her at 5 am ) . Got the ingredients and cooked a few dishes for her now and she was eating 😅😊I am very very happy. From the bottom of my heart BIGGEST THANK YOU 🙏
A month and a half ago we were told our 14 yr old dog was in late stage 4 KD and probably wouldn’t make it thru the weekend, she had had two day treatments at vets of iv fluids, she’s always had issues with her numbers, about 7 yrs. Her numbers were thru the roof, but I believe it was due to the gabapentin they had us give her for a procedure she was supposed to have but never did, she’s always taken days to get over shots or certain downers she’s had to take, the wife and I weren’t ready to go “that” route, we took her home and decided we had to get food into her, she hadn’t eaten anything in about 5 days I blended up blueberries, strawberries, watermelon, cucumber, spinach and some sweet potatoes, with some water I fed her via a syringe, 80ml 3 times a day, along with her nausea meds and Entyce(evening only) I did the same thing with boiled chicken, low sodium chicken broth, tblsp of freeze dried green tripe She wasn’t eating anything on her own, she was weak, lethargic We did this for a month and a half, along with Subq fluids at home Her numbers have dropped drastically, (bun was at 144, now it’s 88) still a bit higher than they should be but nowhere near what they were She’s starting to actually eat on her own SOMETIMES, but not like she should be Originally our vet said she was late stage 2, then it turned into late stage 4 within days, were making another appointment for more blood work and I’ll be curious to know what stage their going to tell us now……I honestly don’t think they even know I’m just looking for the exact foods I should be giving her, so I’m really glad I found this channel
Thanks for the info… I also don’t believe my dog is in stage 3 KD… did you get the latest blood test results and could you share them… only the BUN … thanks
We got her tested Monday and are waiting on results We’ve started her on Phos-Bind to get phosphorus levels down, once that’s down we can start her on calcitriol to lower her calcium levels which had gone up a bit, but that’s only if they haven’t gone down in the latest bloodwork
I’d like to add, SubQ fluids and my wife(she does the fluids herself on Bella) have been the rockstars in this whole thing Fluids help tremendously and once I get results I’ll post them
Received bloodwork yesterday Bella’s Bun is down from 88 to 74 Still on high side but still an improvement, actually all of her numbers have lowered Creatine- 2.3(from 3.8) Phos- 5.3(from 10) So thankfully good improvements Again, we know KD is NOT reversible, but nevertheless we will continue to do everything possible to make whatever time we have left as amazing as possible She’s also starting to eat a bit more on her own, still syringe feeding any medications she needs though
I have a boy told poodle. 13 lbs. 16 yrs. Old. Stage 1 kidney condition. His vet said that he he’s to go on a low protein just like you mentioned here. This video is great. Thank you SO much.
@@thedognutritionistwhat all comes with the kidney health plan? I’m very interested, but it’s not clear from your website-it says a step by step plan, but what does that mean? And most importantly, will it give proper portion sizes for feeding based on dog’s age/stage/size/etc? Thank you. This video & I for action is awesome. I’m so glad I found you!
Noooooo! You should not restrict protein until stage III / IV. You will introduce a host of other issues when you restrict protein too early such as muscle wasting and fatigue :(
Has anyone tried this diet and then monitored blood kidney function markers to see if they improve, stay the same or get worse? I took my cat off his prescription renal diet and put him on a whole food high quality meat diet but within 6 months his kidney disease had progressed and he wasn’t doing very well. My dog now has kidney disease as well as possible pancreatitis and Addison’s disease and as much as I would love her to have a fresh whole food diet I’m scared it’s going to get worse. I know the prescription kidney diets are highly processed but they really do seem to slow progression, I just want my dog to live as long as possible and feel as good as she can. It’s so confusing when there is so much conflicting information out there :(

I am very interested in this since I have one Shih tzu in stage 1 and another in stage 3. But I sure wish you had put the recipe by weight, pound/kg rather than %. My kitchen scale does not do percents 😅.
I tried my Shih-tzu, who also has a bunch of bladder stones, on all the different prescription meds recommended by my vet, she snubbed her nose in disgust at all of them, even when I didn’t feed her anything else she would not eat it. I have done this recipe myself and she loves it. I also use some carrots and broccoli at times.
Have an older dig with high acidic urine, had an urinary infection. They assume calcium oxolate stones or urate stones 2 different diets one low purine on low oxolates. I had been adding Greek yogurt, kefir, eggs, bone pate, chicken ,with dry kibbles. Obviously I was wrong. I heard low or no animal protein but he is a older boxer so no peas or lentils due to heart issues (already had heart palpitations with them) Help please Sabrina & HuggyBear ❤
Just wanted to share that I've tried a variation of this recipe on my beagle with stage 1 kidney disease for 17 days. The variation includes just using pork liver instead of venison liver as well as mango instead of blueberries (as they are also a good source of antioxidants and are more readily available where I live). I kept all the ratios the same, though it is weird how they add up to >100%. I have also monitored my dog's Creatinine (CREA) levels with the vet at the start and end of this diet. The results are as follows: 3.3 mg/dL (day 0) and 5.48 mg/dL (day 17). At least for my dog, this diet was shown to make her kidney disease worse as indicated by a 66% increase in CREA levels over this short span of time. So I would advise to take this recipe/guide with a grain of salt (sorry for the pun) and consult with your vet before switching your dog's diet. Or at least just monitor your dog's CREA levels often when trying out a diet like this to make sure it doesn't have any negative impacts.
My dog's experience with the dog food is as follows: I transitioned my dog to the new diet over a few days. She loved the new dog food immediately. She ate every single bit we gave her at first. She definitely preferred it over Royal Canin Renal. This really made me happy because she is such a picky eater. Her stool was also pretty much normal. However, after a few days, she began picking out the meats from the veg, though I still made sure she ate everything she needed day-to-day. Nearer to the end of the 17 days I noticed that she became very lethargic. She also started vomiting and had blood in her stool. At that point, I knew something was wrong and decided to get her retested. I initially wanted to try out this diet for a month before testing again though I didn't expect her health to turn bad so quickly. I want to note though that the only variable I changed was her diet. Also that by the end of the 17 days, she did not want to even go near the new food anymore. Again this is just me sharing my experience with it so my intention is not to discredit anyone.
Hi there, results on a given day can vary due to many factors like levels of hydration and stress. We recommend two months on the diet for it to take effect. This diet has helped thousands of dogs, and whilst every dog is different, we still think you should give it a little longer. We'd recommend introducing something to increase hydration and give the diet another month. It's fantastic you're monitoring so closely.
My dog is 12 and has existing pancreatitis, she has just been diagnosed with early kidney disease, only sign is SDMA at 18, im so lost trying to find the right food for her, and confused as vets have insisted low protein……
@@thedognutritionistok..lve watched tons of your videos today. All very good, informative, clear..but it's clear to me we need your help..give us a diet or advice on how to treat allergies, congestion, reverse sneezing, snotty, runny nose..red itchy ears..allergies..the bane of a dog (and its owners) life... Vets are chewing up our money, hyped up dog food companies are ripping us off with their hypoallergenic bullshit..PLEASE help us to help our dogs. Raw food clearly is the best but..then what???
Why do I keep reading not to feed chicken liver for dogs with kidney disease due to high phosphrous in chicken liver? Can someone clarify? I'm confused.
Hello. I sent you a message about my dog having cushings disease for approximately 3 yrs ago. From that she developed calcinosis cutis and interdigital cyst. During our last visit to the vet to check her bloodwork I asked the doc to check her urine and discovered protein in the urine. Then discovered she had kidney disease. Amazingly she is doing great. I make her food and do believe it has helped her. I would love to know what would be the best diet for her now. I've only know about the kidney disease for about a month. She is 10 yrs old. Trying to find a balanced recipe that would be good for both diseases. I'm really glad to have found you to help me with this. Thank you so much❤
Anxious to try this! Video says quantities in lbs/oz available via the link but I can't find that info. I'm not great in the kitchen so need all the help I can get. Could you please repost that link?
This is exactly what I've been looking for! Happy to find a reliable source sharing recipes for dog health! Our girl has a chicken allergy, as far as replacing it as a protein, are there any other meats we should avoid for kidney support? Thank you!
I would also love a recipe for liver support. My 14 year old dog was really unwell a few weeks back and turned out his liver enzymes were over 1000. My vet luckily is pro natural so put him on milk thistle and same, ive changed his diet which was already cooked to a more liver friendly one and hes doing really well now but would love some more idea's!

My dog is 12 with stage two. She has never been a good eater of veggies or fruits. She will refuse meat if veggies are mixed in. Should i syring feed her some of this diet?
Hi cam I have a imperial shih tzu 2 years old just diagnosed with kidney disease, I’ve tryed every food recommend but she won’t eat any as she was always on raw , it’s become very difficult, could you send me over the exact amounts I need to use please and thank you so much
My cat was 14 years and 9 months when he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, at 15.5 years he died peacefully. And of course the vet told me he *needed* to eat his kibble and put me on Hill's, I bought a bag not because I believed in the product but because I had nothing else I could do for him. But she couldn't tell me why corn meal kibble was going to be good for him, only that "it was specially formulated that way". It really alarmed me when I was told he got his disease "too late in life" after giving me the stink eye for having him on raw for the vast majority of his life, they even checked his age THREE TIMES because his teeth were too white and perfect for his age.
@@thedognutritionist Thank YOU for helping us see through the fog of war and stay sane out there with its endless manipulative marketing, which is especially what newer pet owners really need help in right now more than ever. My old cat never ate the kibble and I was able to nurse him to the finish line of life, same for our previous animals (our other cat died at 19 years and our dog lived to double his expected age). It's especially isolating when you have old age animals in good health and the vets STILL insist you don't know what you're doing.
thank you for this video, very informative! i’ve been watching your videos and i was wondering if it is possible to receive your insight about The Honest Kitchen (dry food). thank you so much
It's getting nearly impossible to get my 14 1/2 year-old Boykin mix to eat. It would be very helpful if there was a PDF of this recipe, as well as more detailed info on the recipe, starting with, the amount of each ingredient. I do not see where you mention how many pounds of chicken you used in this example.
I love this video! My dog has had a bladder stone removed like 6 years ago and has been on Hills Prescription C/D food and distilled water every since (she hasn't had another stone since). Now I'm retired and would love to start making her food. Can I use this same recipe? Or is there something she shouldn't be eating? Do you sell recipe books for dogs that are susceptible to struvite stones? Thanks

Hi! Have been a huge fan of your work for some time now... Finally decided to switch my dog to a raw diet, just a quick one...how come you boiled the chicken and liver here rather than keeping it raw? Apologies if I missed the why in the vid! cheers
Did I miss a guide about how much food for the different sizes of dog? I've got a 20kg english bull terrier x staffie and wondering how much of the above receipt for each meal?
Great video, My 24 year old is at Cronic kidney disease, the vet says no hope, just let him eat what he enjoys. I have fed him a raw diet of good quality protein, hard to get him to eat veggies, so I decide to cook ithe veg in organic low sodium bone broth, Can this diet be used for 4?
24 years old is an amazing age! I wanted to say that what I do to get my dog to not pick stuff out is to put it all in a food processor at the end. That way it is nearly impossible to pick out the veggies.

😂 As an owner of an adult beagle who needs to lose a LOT of weight, I feel your pain. That girl of ours wants to eat night and day and is kinda sneaky.
You can, but at the later stages you want to boil the meat and remove the water, as this demineralises the meat and removes phosphorus. In a pressure cooker everything stays in.

Thanks so much for sharing this information! I have been feeding a very similar diet, but using kale and zucchini instead of butternut/cauliflower. Do those two veggies also work? Butternut specifically can be difficult to find in my location.
I read about putting honey in dogs food, it's not a wise decision. Ensure honey is pure, without added sweeteners or xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Excessive honey can cause obesity and dental issues in dogs.
What about chickpea or lentil kind of things to add, i have not read anything about them, neither in your book nor in your videos? Are they not good for dogs? Thank you so much

Hi , I have an 11 year old pittie who has had Cushing’s disease for about 2 years now, and recently was diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease , also has some gallbladder issues . They prescribed renal diet and kidney diet . I know he has a lot going on but we’re doing our best to slow down these problems while also making sure his quality of life is good. What would you recommend to cook for him ? I took time off from work to take better care of him and thank god my bf has a good job so price isn’t an issue. Thank you in advance
@@thedognutritionistjust got news today that he is in kidney failure along with new masses and cancer that they found so I need to give him the best possible care /food . I know I have a moral obligation to make sure I don’t prolong his life if he is in pain . 💔

My immediate concern at this point is what about the perscriptions the vet has instructed us to give him. Gabapentin (he is peeing out Protein.) Aventi & benezapril?? Anyone know about these? Safe to follow diet recipes as described here WITH these scripts??

Thank you so much for this video!!! I have a million questions. Is there somewhere I can email? My dog is being very finicky, and also may have lost some sense of smell recently, I can’t get much in her beyond chicken and treats. And she doesn’t want the chicken boiled, she wants it baked because it’s more juicy and flavorful. I don’t know if baking chicken in water reduces phosphorus the same way boiling does. Do you have somewhere where I can send in all the questions I have and get them answered?
@@thedognutritionist unfortunately it’s too late. My dog passed away last month. The vet’s attempt to treat her kidney disease caused her heart disease to advance rapidly and she had to be euthanized. She was 19.

My dog has been on this diet for 2 months now, and she is losing weight. Doing well, but getting skinny. Will adding sweet potato help add some carbs and help her put on some weight? And if so, do I use both butternut squash and sweet potato- or one or the other? Is there any other vegetables that will help gain weight, and there are still are safe for dogs with renal failure?
@@thedognutritionist thank you so much for your reply. She is currently on Millie's wolfheart tracker wet food with a little kibble added, I would love to start her on home cooked food but cannot find recipes suitable for epilepsy

Hello sir Recently my pet (shihtzu) been diagnosed with B/L Renal Dysplasia... What diet I'm supposed to follow and how much of oral fluids I need to maintain in him
I am very sorry to hear that, it's an extremely tricky issue. It's very dependent on the individual, but a very simple fresh food diet. Wash all the ingredients and boil the meat.
