These great kids really put me through the ringer with all their "Why" questions! LOL. I'm not sure I answered them very well, but it was fun having them on the farm and to see their curiosity about our favorite fluffy chickens :)
Do you have questions about the Silkie?

Kids are so inquisitive, it's awesome! When my son (now 21!!!) was in first grade I did a ''what wild plants grows around us that we can eat or cure ourselves with'' kind of a talk LOL Sorry the Frenchie in me doesn't know how to translate this :D They were all sitting in a semi circle and so interested...We need to teach our kids at a young age so there's no more lost of knowledge!!!

I don't really consider myself a very good teacher, but I love to share my passions. When people will listen I will share. Kid's are a great audience because they are generally fascinated by these things.

Blake Kirby I think you're doing a better job at teaching than most of the teachers I ever had at state school. But, then again, we were never taught anything so interesting like different chicken breeds...

Great video, Blake! I learned a lot! Never knew much about silkies. One question they didn't ask: how big are the eggs, and how do they taste compared to other breeds?
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 10 лет назад
The eggs are small compared to "normal" layers. The flavor is the same really. We usually eat the Silkie eggs and sell the other eggs. I don't like to sell the Silkie eggs because they are small.

Three Silkie eggs equal one regular chicken egg.

One thing about children is they aren't afraid to ask WHY. lol Very pretty chickens Blake. I have a question to if you don't mind. Are the Silkies' eggs basically the same size as normal eggs? Thanks for the video.
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 10 лет назад
As a hen matures the eggs can get a little bit closer to a "normal" egg, but no... they are always considered small in my experience.

This was a really great video. I love the "1980's hairband comment" - LOL. Watching this video really makes me want to raise Silkies ... but I'm in a residential zoning district which prevents me from doing so :( How much noise does these Silkies make ? Maybe in the future I'll try to go "stealth" and be sneaky to raise them.. lol.. Thanks again for this upload

Check your laws to see if "Bantam" is allowed. Sometimes they are considered a small caged bird and will be allowed.

my silkie hatched 5 chicks today and im wondering can i leave them free range during the day i don't have many preditors here in ireland except crows and ravens would the mom protect them from crows :) thanks
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 10 лет назад
Yay! New chicks :) ... I don't have any experience with crows so I don't know for sure. The mama will keep a good eye on them and I've seen the mama hens get pretty feisty, so there is a good chance yes.

great video. do they fly at all?
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 8 лет назад
+Tracy Bickford They flutter LOL ... I've never seen a Silkie fly.
@ravendavis2586
@ravendavis2586 8 лет назад
They can NOT fly, their wings aren't structured to and their feathers aren't "flight" feathers. They don't have the hard middle and the wind/air goes through them, not over or under.

While I do not know why the hens have combs,roosters have them to get the hens to like them more than smaller combed Roos.

Hi there, I'm interested in buying my own silkie but first would like to know if it's a better idea to buy them in pairs or if one will still have a happy life on its own? Thanks (:
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 7 лет назад
I wouldn't own just one chicken unless you were going to give it lots of your attention. Get a couple so they can be friends :)
@javiermiranda643
@javiermiranda643 7 лет назад
Blake Kirby I would feel bad bad for just owning one and risking the possibility of it feeling lonely but my parents just don't seem to like cute animals anymore, I'll just come home with two 4-6 month old' silkies and hopefully they accept them with no problem 😅

pretty sure that red thing on roosters is just to differentiate them from hens.

Rose Ray No. The comb is also used for identifying other chickens and to disperse heat when it's hot out.
