More on Paul’s story: In this interview, Paul Gingerich had already spent two years in juvenile prison as he was serving a 25 year sentence for conspiracy to commit murder. Paul was 12 years old at the time of his crime. In this interview, Paul talked about what his experience was like in the county jail while being held there during his trial, and what the process was like being interrogated by police. He also discussed what he wanted for his future someday.
Update: Paul appealed his sentence, and the case went to the Indiana Supreme Court. The court threw out his adult conviction and remanded the case back to the juvenile courts for re-sentencing. He received a sentence modification in 2016 and was released from prison in 2017 after spending seven years behind bars. He was 19 years old at the time of his release. Paul's case inspired child advocates and juvenile justice activists to lobby for change in Indiana's juvenile sentencing guidelines, with the hope that juvenile judges would be able to maintain jurisdiction over some juvenile cases rather than automatically waiving kids to adult court. Their efforts resulted in a new law dubbed "Paul's Law," which gave Indiana courts greater flexibility in deciding juvenile sentences. This law is sometimes called a "Blended Sentencing" law in states around the U.S.
