I got the whisky advent calendar for my husband as a Christmas gift this year. We've been enjoying watching your videos before each window. Please continue. Cheers from Texas!
Whoops - didn't realize you were in TX until after we sent that message (found your RU-vid video when we opened the first advent window and Googled the whisky). We're in Fort Worth.
I have been meaning to try this whisky for a while, but I kept putting it off. It’s a very nice whisky. Peat, vanilla, creamy finish....natural color. Best of all it’s relatively inexpensive. I’ll be buying Kilchoman whiskies in the future. 🐬
Just had my first sip of this last night. Man, what an extraordinary whisky! Funnily enough, I didn't find it so very aggressive at all. For me the vanilla and citrus notes were very prominent. This whisky shot up to my top 5 in an instant.
Daniel I have had this bottle for 3 years and only just opened it. Wow. Fantastic and as always it gives me extra comfort having a Whisk(e)y Vault review!!!!
So many good peated malts to choose from, and the number of distilleries is only growing, not to the extent of the growth seen in the US, but still substantial compared with the last few decades.
Dammit Daniel! It was going to be a single dram of Kilchoman, one video and off to bed. Now I've got to get the Caolila out! (um, thanks, I love the comparisons)
Agree with you. Just got one. Hope its better in 2 months. Not happy with it now. It was better a couple of days later as compared to neck pour. At this point would not buy again.
My calendar arrived a bit late so I am behind. No worries though. I had the same thought when I sipped this: Caol Ila! Alas, I like Caol Ila so much I don't have any left for comparison. Good stuff.
Oh my god! I'm sitting here, drinking my Kilchoman Mahir Bay, listening to you saying "it reminds me of Caol Ila" and I think: "Oh my! Yes, it does!" - and you're actually going to compare it. Well done. :-)
This whiskey is fantastic. Really reminds me of 2 Big Pete Christmas editions I've had. Very Caol Ila 12/Ardbeg 5 Beastie type smoke. She with lemon and nuttiness, but somehow there is an Arran type of must and spirit character. Reminds me a bit of a barely aged single cask rum too. REALLY NEED SOME AIR. a touch of h20 is great, but it doesn't take extra well. Great nest too. Needs time in glad. 5-12m.
Hey Daniel, do you know anything about the Claymore whisky? I came across one bottle one day years ago and don't remember much except that it was a clear easy to drink one.
Been following you for a while, and thanks to you I've been discovering amazing whiskies, this time on my first approach to kilchoman, I think i disagree a bit with you Daniel to my taste and smell i feel it more close to a Ardbeg and Laphroaig, cheers from California
How do I tell which year Machir I have? I have 2 of 3 bottles left and wanted to know how to determine the year as I compare to the reviews posted in distiller app
Just purchased a bottle. Very disappointed. Young, harsh, aggressive. I am missing peat influence. Very understated. A bit better a couple of days later getting beyond neck pour. Would not buy again. I loved Port Charlotte 10 and Laphroaig 10. Port Charlotte was great from the 1st opening and keeps getting better.
I just bought this on a bit of a whim because it was priced very reasonably and it was packaged with two very nice tumblers. Turns out it is a great whiskey, although very smoky and aggressive as the reviewer says so if that’s not your style you should probably look elsewhere.
After watching you & Rex act like goofballs day in & day out, it's hilarious to revisit this and find you summoning Mr. Rogers for this review. At any rate- I am by no means an expert in Scottish, but I question how the 'C' in Kilchoman could be silent, while in 'Machir', you pronounce a hard 'C'. Get it straight, laddie!!
Do not like this one! Unbalanced to me... too much on the sweet side at taste. It does have a good nose. My favorite scotch is lagavulin 16 and I’m drinking talisker at the moment.
